Hotel Rwanda (2004)
Heart-wrenching, Inspiring, and Enlightening
I just got back from seeing Hotel Rwanda and in attempting to write a review, I find that all my words are lacking and are inadequate as well. I cannot fully describe the extent into which I was drawn into and moved by this film.
I cried and laughed and rejoiced-the full gamut of emotions. Don Cheadle should have won the Oscar for this performance. I do not care what the Academy voters think-HE deserved it for his performance of a man, simply trying to keep not only his family, but innocent people from harm.
The woman who played his wife, (sorry, I cannot remember her name) was just as excellent as Cheadle. I also commend the thousands of extras who composed this film-especially the children.
Heart-wrenching, inspiring, enlightening, everyone should see this film. You will not regret it.
The Village (2004)
M. Night Shamaylan is Brilliant....
Yesterday, as I sat onb opening night of The Village, I was filled with anticipation and nervousness..."was this movie going to be as good as The Sixth Sense, or as Signs?" The answer is an emphatic YES. DESPITE the bad IMDB rating....I am shocked. The people who gave bad ratings/reviews apparently did not understand the message/point of the movie. Are you looking to be scared? Then NO this is not the movie for you-there are many tense moments, and many scenes that leave you asking "why?"-HOWEVER M. Night answers all of your questions in the end. This movie is profound in it'mesage; one cannot run from pain-and sometimes faith is enough to get you through desparate times. The performances by Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, and Adrien Brody are excellent-in fact-the entire cast is excellent-they make you feel and understand their characters and motivations despite the extreme time difference between our times and theirs. PLEASE do not miss out on this excellent movie...believe me it is a classic....it will leave you thinking after it is over..now how many movies can you say do that? M. Night is BRILLIANT. Plain and simple. Go see it!!!!!!!!!
The Nun's Story (1959)
Inner Conflict
I think that this film contains one of Audrey Hepburn's strongest performances. The movie, however, is not for everyone. The movie has no gloss, no "this is purely for entertainment" message. This movie requires that you think and really watch the movie, otherwise the meaning is lost and thus, you will not like the movie. Others have said that this movie is "slow and boring", but watch the movie yourself. You will see the brilliance of Audrey Hepburn's performance as she portrays Sister Luke's struggle to live for herself and for God. This is a great movie! Please do not be discouraged by the implied "seriousness" of it!
The Long, Hot Summer (1958)
Watch it only for Newman and Woodward's Acting
I have always liked Paul Newman-as an actor, But for some reason, in this movie-he is just plain HOT. Now, the movie is a little grainy, and shows its age. It's also kind of embarrasing to watch nowadays because the acting(by everyone else but Newman and Woodward) seems "50-ish" Orsen Wells(wearing WAY too much make up- and seemingly overacting) is ecentric and at times you can't understand a word he's saying, Lee Remick is cute but ditzy and the brooding and whining of Woodward's brother is so annoying. However, Newman-is just perfect in his role-you can tell that Newman has prepared for this role-and is serious about it.and the chemistry between Woodward make this movie watchable. Watch this movie for them.
Suddenly, Last Summer (1959)
Great story, great acting...
Elizabeth Taylor gives a great performance in this dark, but interesting story. Katharine Hepburn is also brilliant in her lengthy monologues- as are the rest of the actors. Montgomery Clift is overshadowed somewhat although he is very much a part of the story and should not be ignored. I found this movie to be as good an adaptation of playwright Tennessee Williams work, as "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" was. Watch this movie for the brilliant and moving acting.
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Maybe it was the movie...maybe it was just Tom Cruise...?
As much as I wanted to like this movie- I couldn't...it was soooo hyped that maybe I was just disappointed by the result. The children are cute...some moments are funny...but there is something about this movie that seems insincere..maybe it's Tom Cruise's acting. Sometimes I really do think that he looks like such a "pretty boy" that it takes away from the reality and the truthfulness of the characters he plays. This movie is an example of this. I don't know...something about his performance irked me. Renee Zellweger was great though and so were the kids in the movie and definitely Cuba Gooding was good, but I don't think he deserved an oscar for it. watch it...you just might find it to be entertaining.... (7 stars out of 10)
Gilda (1946)
The most well known example of Film Noir...
I have noticed that most of the comments on this movie were made by males who apparently reveled in Rita Hayworth's beauty, I must agree and say that she is the person to watch in this movie. Glenn Ford is interesting to watch here- I never did understand his characters motivation...or Gilda's for that matter...or even Ballin's but the movie is interesting to watch nonetheles. There is definately something about Rita Hayworth in this movie. I can't quite put my finger on it..I suppose it's screen presense? However, the plot is a little on the "easy way out" side (check out the ending) and is tied into a neat little knot...but a good movie anyway!! This is definately good Film Noir.
Tart (2001)
Unbelievably badly written and executed...
Why do people make bad movies? Didn't anyone working on the picture know that what they were making had no point? There is something about this picture that threw me off, besides the fact that I found this "movie" to be unrealistic, pathetic, and POORLY ACTED. I admire them for the try, but the "actors" in the movie at times seem to be trying to hard and no single character has substance or says anything mildly intelligent. This movie deserves zero stars. But I did not have that option, so it gets a 1.
