Girl Most Likely (2012)
Don't Miss It - Quite the Surprise!
After watching this film, my girlfriend said, "ya know, thebest way to enjoy a movie is to go into it with no expectations.
Well, that's how we viewed this. It was a late rental, from a kiosk, and we picked it based on the box figuring it would be "something light and fun" because it had Kristen Wig. Oddly, it got too late to watch anything until the next day, and boy I'm glad we waited.
Much of the description is in the synopsis of this film. I call it a "film" because it is just that - it's not your typical Hollywood comedy of breakup, or heartache, or going for cheap laughs. Nor is it a tug on your heartstrings predictable drama. Instead this film has the perfect mix, and warm story of an independent film, with some, but not too many quirky family relationships, and real, flawed love story, with family, friendships...some hope, some heartache.
I'm used to seeing Kristin Wig in silly comedic roles - in this, Wig, Benning, Matt Dylan, et. al are all outstanding...just watch it. Warm, warm film.
Under the Dome (2013)
Loved it - with a Big "BUT"
For anyone complaining about the bad acting, and unlikable characters on this show, I say "shush." It's STEVEN KING. While usually intriguing, his characters are rarely likable. They're usually flawed, sometime dull, and some with a few bad or evil tendencies - in other words, they're just like most of us.
That said, I hung in there - there is no payoff in the first season, and it SHOULD have ended, but lets get real - TV is about bucks, and they know they've got eyeballs on this show.
Nothing is resolved at the end of the first season leaving the door open for more potential melodrama and mayhem.
We get the idea that those under the dome are maybe being "saved" from the rest of the world (we called it in this household) and potential ensuing mayhem...but that said, they should have killed off the bad guy, or even the good guy. It would have made for an altogether new plot- line for the next season.
In short order the final episode ends with the sun coming out. Bleh!
Dumb and Dumber (1994)
Yes - I know my "10" is a bit much...but...
This movie is LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY.
I'm a guy who is, well, essentially a snob when it comes to films, preferring foreign, dark dramas or Woody Allen flicks (my exception is Zombies...go figure!) BUT how I missed this until now is beyond me. Just caught it last night - performances are brilliant/funny...
Physical/verbal comedy...plot twists...genuinely hysterical. Even thought it's 20 plus years old, it holds up well. I read that there is a sequel in the works, and whether or not that's a good idea is hard to say. I will say based on THIS film I'll shell out my 12 bucks to see a sequel with a room full of fans. By the way, this is NOT for kids - even thought the characters are cartoons essentially - the humor would surely be missed on most them.
Trees Lounge (1996)
Long Island Type Worker Class Captured
Loved it....
While not especially dark, this film really captures the lingering malaise that is a working life in the New York area burbs.
If you spent any time growing up, living in the area you know a place like the "Trees Lounge" that is populated by "townies" that sort of never leave. I won't write a review of the performances/script other than it is a great "capture."
Highly recommended -- especially for those that love theater as well. Stellar all around - glad I caught it on Netflix. You may very well want to watch this flick as a warning tale as well. You already know everyone in the film!
Devil Rider (1991)
No Bad Considering
I finally watched this film...and frankly, enjoyed. After all, my father wrote it!!!! I happen to know a little bit about the film in that it was all shot on 200 foot reels AND everything was done in one take. NO multiple takes...which, outside of editing, would be akin to shooting a video on the fly today, and handing it to someone...
All that taken into consideration, it is actually a great horror story: The spirit of a psychotic comes back in the flesh to claim his land...bloodying up everyone on it in the process.
If it had been done with a multimillion dollar budget and b grade actors (ex: Cary Elweis, etc) it could be a lot of fun.
I say, remake it...only this time around with some big names and big budgets.
Dazed and Confused (1993)
I Couldn't AGREE MORE!
EVERY shot of this film is so right on/spot on that I feel like I'm watching a documentary...
I was 15 years old in 1976 - Saw Aerosmith Twice that year....and knew seniors who drove "goats." I remember I wanted a goat too.
We didn't get beat with paddles. No, they hung us Freshman outside the bus window while it was in motion. I can't believe none of us got killed.
My best friend went up to a bully after a humiliation in the cafeteria and got in one good punch the way Adam Goldberg does in the park scene.
Oh yeah...the Friday night Keggers. Yeah, they were real...as long as you were "buying cigarettes for your Mom" they'd throw the beer in without question.
I recommend this movie to ANYONE born between 55 & 65. I recommend it to anyone who wants to know what it was like -- don't ask someone that was there, just shut up and watch this incredible movie!
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Still Damn Scarey and Accurate
This movie holds up incredibly well nearly 50 years later.
Some have likened this films content to 1950's paranoia over communism. I daresay, it's underlying context, of human souls being replaced by bodies void of emotion, and instead supplanted by the pretext of it, is more poignent today. One need only watch this film as an early warning sign of modern narcissistic glorification of all things quick, plastic, and "pretty" to appreciate "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."
If you choose to NOT look for allusions and metaphors in this film, by all means, DON'T. It's still one of the scariest films ever made.
