District 9 (2009)
District 9 and It's Very Realistic Setting Will Surprise You
I went into this movie, not thinking much about it, since there really wasn't all that much hype for it. As I sat down in my seat, and the film started, I knew I was watching something new.
It starts off with a cloverfield-esquire to it. Documenting various people and their thoughts on the aliens etc. The main actor, Sharlto Copley, has a great breakthrough performance, it being his first in a feature film. I do not want to give too much away because this film needs to be watched the whole way through for complete satisfaction. From start to finish it is a wonderful ride that dives through every emotion. During this movie, you will feel sad for the aliens. You will want them to succeed. This is an outstanding movie, that made me angry when something created from a computer was killed. This movie is a journey through the corrupt humans and their desires for power. Peter Jackson's name comes with the movie because it is on par with one of his. The director, Neill Blomkamp, does a superb job to immerse the viewer with this extremely realistic world, where aliens exist. It is not a dream, they are here, and they have a plan. That plan is to get home.
College (2008)
College is Not What It is Expected To Be
This is another one of those teen movies trying to incorporate realistic scenarios but adding a little Hollywood twist to it. The cast list is very similar to superbad. The fat obnoxious friend who curses a lot and talks mad game, the nerdy kid who won't get laid till he's 30, and the "coming out of his awkward turtle shell" guy.
There are a lot of clever and kickass moments in this movie, but it really does not go anywhere for me. The cliché love scenes, the unrealistic party setting. ( Band, Strippers in Cages, Topless girls serving you drinks, Paintballing underclassmen ) The fact is, this is what college would be like if it were real for every guys dream. I would love to have a naked body wash for 5 dollars, but will it happen? Probably not.
College tried to hard to become a classic like Superbad, but with the over the top and quite disturbing scenes, I'm gonna stick with the golden Apatow creation and stick to community for a year.
The Rocker (2008)
The Rocker Rocks Out
Yes this movie has a very cliché plot. The drummer gets kicked out of the band he pretty much made famous. A lot of the scenes have some memorable lines with a nice C list cast. A few A listers are Rainn Wilson and Christina Applegate, while teddy Geiger makes his first on screen debut, after releasing his album a few years back.
Emma Stone, Jules from Superbad, is a nice addition to the film, with her post-modern charm and cute style.
Josh Gad is the nerdy fat kid, who kind of reminds me of an awkward mix between Jonah Hill and Michael Cera.
Jeff Garlin from Curb Your Enthusiasm steals the show with his witty one-liners and funny actions.
The Rocker is definitely an entertaining experience that is only possible in Hollywood, so have fun and rock out! 6/10
Be Kind Rewind (2008)
Be Kind, Eject
This movie started off extremely slow, and never really picked up much pace. I'm a huge fan of Jack Black but even his part could not save this movie. It was not realistic at all, having the girl from the cleaners somehow become BFF's with them, to getting their aging mechanic to help out with the films. It was just a very repetitive movie that was just very unbelievable. It's as plain as that.
Also the customers acted very oddly to this strange occurrence. If someone had erased all the VHS's at my local video shop, I'd be sure not to be in the same room with him.
Please, don't even rent this movie and waste your time, you will highly regret it, I couldn't even sit through the whole thing.
Tropic Thunder (2008)
A Little Over The Top, But Tropic Thunder Storms Through
To start off, this is a very original concept that has not even been attempted, yet alone recreated, until now. Stiller directs a very edgy, epic-violent comedy that crosses every boundary possible. It takes a lot of A listers, and mixes them in with some of Apatow's fine list of guys to create and overall funny storyline. (Tom Cruise is hilarious, you wouldn't even realize it's him until the credits) For the first time, this movie starts off with an advertisement for Booty Sweat, and then three trailers, this was a very unique and interesting way to reel in the audience...and it seemed to work judged by all the laughter.
I recommend this film to all those who enjoyed Pineapple Express, heck to anyone who enjoys any war movie, except as a spoof. This pokes fun at every area possible to nitpick at.
Definitely a keeper, and remember to get the TiVo.
I Am Legend (2007)
Will Smith is a Legend
This movie just goes to show that one actor can be on screen and still be very entertaining. Will Smith does an amazing job at becoming delusional and acting as if he really is all alone.
His bond with his dog is a strong one, which escalates throughout the movie. He has to make some tough decisions, but it's all about being a legend. Not only was seeing NYC completely empty, with all the cars, buildings, and atmosphere straight out of a ghost town, the weeds growing through the cracks of the streets and wild animals roaming wild made this movie extremely...(read more) believable. You would never know this was a thriller until it POPS out at you, and I am serious when I say POP. Very good CGI's, got repetitive, but nonetheless, very good. Being the only man alive, I'd grab a better ride than his GT, because every car in the city was abandoned.
Sydney White (2007)
Amanda Bynes and Her Seven Almost Believable Nerds
Honestly...at first I looked at the front cover and thought hey, this looks like a crappy chick flick being my sisters have already seen the movie twenty times, and the cover just looks corner.
So right away the movie starts off slow, introducing who she is, what she does, her mom died when she was nine, yada yada. It picks up when she has to fill the kappa legacy, her getting kicked out and sent to Vortex to chill with her nerd friends, and the election.
I soon realize with all the brilliant names like White Witchburn and Prince that this movie was all about a modern day Snow White. The dorks are the dwarfs, the virus is the poisonous apple, the "Hi Hoes", it really had a lot of cameos from its model film.
The message this movie portrays is a positive one, and you will laugh a lot along the way...especially if you've experienced college, are doing so now, or on their way, it's fun for everyone.
"I've never had sex, but I really, really want to!"
Pineapple Express (2008)
Pineapple Express Smokes Away The Competition - A Truly Classic Stoner Flick
First off, Seth Rogen and James Franco do an unbelievable job as two immature stoner's on a journey to fend for their lives. This movie had all the potheads in the theater cracking up from start to finish, and I must say, not going stoned, I kind of regret it.
The highschool girlfriend, the fight scenes, the snarky remarks from the people who just blatantly murder anyone who their boss says to pop, and all the other scenes are just priceless. ( Ex: The cell phone scene)
It has the usually Superbad, Knocked, 40 Year Old Virgin humor that we all love to watch, and it has a few recycled actors from the previous films in it, so that was a definite plus.
This movie starts off right away as a comedy and has you guessing what Dale does for a living, but through one mind-boggling incident a very compelling action thriller develops that redfines cinema. This is a definite recommendation for anyone who enjoyed the previous films I listed AND/OR anyone who has an occasional joint here and there.
"FUCK THE POLICE!"
