A Price Above Rubies (1998)
A reflection on all religions
First, I should point out that I am not religious, although my upbringing was of a Christian background.
I thought the movie could have been made within the context of any of the major religions, whether they be of an orthodox or a fundamentalist nature. The important thing to remember is that the heroine is questioning the powers that be! She is attempting to break away from the set dogma that, I think, limits all the major religions, and makes enemies of those who worship differently than you do. She believes in her own God, as she wants him to be, not some formal God that she has been taught to fear! That is the major point, as I see it! Why should anyone be taught to fear God! All religions should teach that the belief in God is LOVE! Love yourself, your family, your neighbor, your countrymen, and ALL HUMAN BEINGS! Love, peace on earth! Fear brings misunderstandings, prejudices, and wars between the world's peoples.
I fear misdirected people like President George Bush more than I could ever possibly fear God!
The Song of Leonard Cohen (1980)
The Life of a Wandering Jew
Interesting indie low tech footage of the Canadian poet, songwriter, performer, etc. What I don't buy though is the fact that the audio track is of such low quality. I can look past the amateur cinematographer's jerky handling of the camera, but knowing that there would be musical performances included in the film makes me question what the film maker's motive was for making the film in the first place. Surely, Mr. Cohen and his comrades deserve better than the audio track recorded on this film. Other than that, a good insight into Leonard's world! I especially liked the footage filmed in Greece, where LC has a vacation apartment tucked away, overlooking the Mediterranean.
Mr. Jones (1993)
A case of unreality!
Everything about this movie was a lesson in unreality! The only real thing about it was the location shooting, which happens to be my home town of San Diego. Did Jones have a first name? (I didn't hear him called anything but Mr. Jones.) The doctor's offices (not the hospital) were filmed at the Salk Institute in La Jolla which is a few miles north. Mr. Jones's apartment is located between 4th and 5th Avenue on Market St. I can't think of any film starring Richard Gere that is as bad as this one, perhaps it is a reflection of his state of mind while he was still married to Cindy Crawford. I wonder what Gere's opinion of San Diego is? I hope it's better than his opinion of Henry Kissinger, who he told Charlie Rose, he would love to have a chance to debate face to face on Charlie's show.
Reilly: Ace of Spies (1983)
The only non-Russian buried in the Kremlin Wall!
I remember back when this "Mystery" series aired with Vincent Price as the host. My roommates were averse to watching anything on non-commercial television (PBS), until I asked them to watch "Reilly". After that, every Thursday evening at 9:00 PM, we'd tune in Reilly's latest caper. Thanks to the British Television industry for producing this fine series and thank you PBS for airing it in the US! The British really know how to make fine programs, but I think that they are rather too sophisticated for most of the American public. The typical American couch potato would rather have commercial interruptions in order to visit the fridge or use the loo, without missing any of the fluff that he has tuned in.
I wish that PBS would repeat these excellent shows along with "Inspector Morris", "Hercule Poirot", and "Rumpole of the Baily"!
Solaris (2002)
Solaris: my next vacation destination!
I'd venture to say that every person would like to change something that happened to them in the past. I can't count the numerous things that I would like to change, but I'd settle for one. I once knew a woman that loved me and I was too full of myself to realize it. I've never found the same unconditional sort of love that she had for me over the past 25 years and I seriously doubt if I ever will again. If only I could find my way to Solaris. . .
I see why George Clooney is considered by many women to be so desirable from a few of the beef-cake scenes in the movie. George has one hell of a nice body for a man his age!
I've seen "The Perfect Storm" and "Oceans 11" and I thought that Mr. Clooney's acting talents were better used in "Solaris". With this performance he has made me a fan and thus, I will look forward to seeing his work in the future, rather than avoiding it.
