Lover Stalker Killer (2024)
MIxed Review
This was definitely watchable, but flawed. Any time I figure out the "bad guy" within 15 minutes, this is a bad sign. Because of this, at times it dragged on. And some of the police work was so sloppy it's barely credible.
On the good side, towards the end when they got it together, it was fascinating, esp the guy who wrote the program and how he used it to sort the data. Also, the police interview with her was kind of gripping.
Finally, on the meh side, Dave wasn't an idea lead. They can't do much about that, though. He wasn't a bad guy, and it was cool he moved there to be with his kids, but let's just say brains aren't his strong suit.
Quarterback (2023)
I loved this!
I'm a Commander fan and my fiance is a Titans fan. Each of us had skin in the game!
For the most part, I loved this and I thought it was exceptionally well done. With Cousins and Mahomes, I was so impressed by their work ethic, altho it was very different for each. Mahomes is all about maintaining his physical strength and Cousins is a lot more cerebral. Watching it, though, I felt kind of stupid not realizing Cousins is such a cool person. I liked him as our QB, but got pissed over the tag stuff. Still, I'm glad our team was part of this. Given the show's name, we won't be featured until I'm in my 60's, sitting in a rocker and crocheting pot warmers.
My guy was stoked for Mariota, but I wasn't so sure. Mariota is perfectly likable, but he just didn't contribute anything. We watched that Eagles game last night, and I felt horrible for him. He looked awful.
My only gripe is the same one others have mentioned, so there's no point in elaborating. I do enjoy meeting the wives, but it just wasn't smart to let one consume so much airtime.
On to Joe Burrow and 2 yet-to-be-named sidekicks!
Dead to Me (2019)
I envy people about to watch this for the 1st time.
First, Christina Applegate is a rock star! Before watching this, I knew basically nothing. I missed MWC, I don't recall her in anything else & I knew nothing about her illness. But what she pulled off in this series is almost not credible. Now I'm googling to see what else she's been in. She had me hating her, liking her, loving her, and most of all, laughing.
After that, big props for the casting and the acting. The casting was superb, and not one actor made me silently mutter that a trip to acting school is in order.
On the downside, yep.... Season 3. It's not because of the sadness. It's because it could have been so much better. Maybe they changed writers during the break? I wish Judy had gone to Sedona doing what she loved - cooking, serving, making people happy. Then one night she realizes the end is near. She calls Jen, who rushes there and they go through the passage together, just the 2 of them. Also, Jen carrying Ben's baby is sort of cringe for me. That's mainly because Ben himself was cringy.
Danger Lurking Under My Roof (2023)
Better than I expected
This one had a somewhat credible plot line and some very decent acting. But what kept it from a higher rating is the same basic frustration: They take too long to get to the ending (in this case, a very good one with a nice twist). There's so much filler in here, starting with the bf. He served no purpose to the plot, so why include him? Then the ending pops up unexpectedly and there's the loose end, or missing context. For example, I would have loved to see the convo between the 2 moms when they reconciled. I would have loved to see Mark begging his fam not to dump him. This ending was worth a lot more than the 4 minutes it got.
Friday Night Lights (2006)
Watch it twice.
The 1st go around, I loved the show, but I missed some of the more nuanced characters. Yes, Coach Taylor is a rock star, but secondary ones like Tyra and Riggins are so multilayered. I even include Smash in this. Yes, he's a cocky, at times annoying, running back, but he's a good person determined to provide for his family. My gripes are all personal pref type stuff, and one appears to be very unpopular. But even though I like Connie Britton, I can't stand Tami Taylor. There, I said it! She's just so high maintenance and talkative. It really bugged me when she decided to stay in Dillon because of her job and then whined to Eric about how hard it was with him not there. I also hated the camera stuff. In so many scenes, I was staring up someone's nostrils, and there's some big nostrils on this show. Not my fave angle. My final whine is the complete lack of supervision some of these kids had. But none of this is enough for me to mark it down. It's a great show.
Still Alice (2014)
It coulda been a contender....
The basic plot and casting got me to watch this. And for the first 20 minutes or so, it lived up to potential. Then it...stopped. There was zero character development. Alec Baldwin could have been a blowup doll, but that wasn't his fault. All he did was walk around and say he'd stay with her. I couldn't describe any of the 3 kids if someone held a gun to my head.
I also don't think Julianne accurately portrayed an Alz patient. She actually came across more like a Stepford wife. I don't blame her, though. There was no attempt to show a broader view of what these patients are like.
As for Julianne, I've always liked her, but I don't think.
The Kardashians (2022)
11 reviews on Week 3?
The title tells the story, I guess. I watched episodes 1 and 2 last night, and I'm pretty much done. I did enjoy a few seasons of this show, like in the very beginning and maybe when they started having kids. But it's never been a show I can just binge on. The self absorption is super cringe at this point. My fave has always been Kendall, and I'm sure part of it is she doesn't buy into this stuff as much. That by itself makes her more intriguing. I can kind of see why people use it to escape, but they aren't the only show in town to provide this! Ish.
Virgin River (2019)
Are you okay? I'm fine. Oh, I want you to see a therapist.
Mel is the most annoying character I have ever seen! Title pretty much says it all, but she has the personality of vanilla pudding. I also hate that little smirk thing she does all the time. Ack! I do think this could have been a good show. Some of the casting is really good, and as for Charmaine, I like it when there's a character I "love to hate". She is so deliciously horrible. Two stars for the scenery and the last episode of Season 4. There are 2 very promising cliffhangers that probably won't go anywhere, but it's fun to wonder. I did read they have a new showrunner, which might really help. Find a qualified dialogue writer!
24 (2001)
Flawed show gets 10 stars
I've binged this twice and I'd say it's the most amazing show ever. They managed to weave these incredibly complex plots in a way where it's not confusing or hard to keep up with. For the most part, casting was brilliant. I'm kind of bummed I just finished 2nd binge and have to wait to start over. As I said, yes there were flaws, but mostly fairly minor. First, Season One was a disaster. First seasons often aren't the best, but the same brains that put put together the rest of the show thought we'd enjoy watching Kim and Teri get dumber and dumber? 2nd, there were non-credible plot lines. The POTUS is not going to sit alone in his office talking directly to a terrorist with his incompetent Chief of Staff by his side. Plausible deniability?! Also, every season featured a traitor. Either at CTU or the Pres's inner circle. It's a great plot device, but c'mon. Dana Walsh worked at CTU under a false name! Third, there were some minor dropped plots and bad writing w/ dialog. The last season was the worst. When Heller was talking to the Russian leader after blowing up their boat, he called it an "accident". Why not tell him asap their infrastructure had been hacked? But overall, this stuff isn't a dealbreaker and I would love to see a reunion episode. At least we won't have to watch Audrey acting important, wringing her hands and juggling her men.
The Dinner (2017)
Ever been to an art gallery?
You're standing there looking at a $5000 painting that resembles baby puke, probably about 5 jars of peas. You're pretending to "study" it and along comes some jerk with a haughty wife who discuss it for a solid hour. That's what this movie is. In fact, I'm halfway through it and I came here to read the spoilers just to put myself out of my misery.
Grey's Anatomy (2005)
So this happened.
EDIT: I've edited this so many times. First 10 seasons was pretty rah rah and loving the plot lines. Each season after that started a mudslide. 17 was intolerable (other than Japril together in Boston), and 18 has jumped the shark. Every character I loved is gone (except my love/hate thing with Bailey) and now I'm supposed to care? Also, the preachy, box checking is worst of all. Kai didn't work out because Kai can't act, so now let's turn Leo into a girl. I'd watch it forever if they could go back to earlier seasons and develop actual plots based on a hospital. But they won't do this. Ugh.
24: Legacy (2016)
Shouldn't have done this
As a huge fan of 24, naturally I watched this, but it was ghastly. The casting was awful, the plot was predictable, and they were trying too hard to be inclusive. The one bright spot was Ashley Thomas as Isaac. This guy stole the show and he's a terrific actor.
If you want to spin this because you loved 24, don't.
This Is Us (2016)
Show is aging like a fine milk
I quickly became hooked on Season 1 and couldn't wait for 2. It had some powerful moments, but it wasn't as gripping as the 1st season. Now in Season 3, I'm watching out of habit, hoping it gets better. So far, it hasn't. I do love most of the casting, but Randall (both the character and the actor) is starting to drive me nuts. The other person I FF through is Kate. It's not her weight, it's her personality. I was so stoked when they got married, but now she's so high maintenance and he's a good guy.
I also don't like storylines that involve just one of them. The whole appeal of this show is the highs and lows of a family seen through different generations. I can watch Jack and Rebecca forever, but I don't think any of the triplets are interesting enough to carry a whole episode.
tl;dr - I'm still hanging in there. I also wish they'd bring back Randall's biofather. I love that guy!
The Voice (2011)
Mixed Bag
I've been watching since Season 3 and I really enjoy this show. I've been exposed to some great talent and love the iTunes downloads! Overall, I like the format and coaching. I'm not at all tired of Adam and Blake, although I get it when people say they are.
Right now, though, the panel w/ Kelly and JHud is driving me nuts. I liked Kelly last season, even if she was a bit overbearing. Now she's downright obnoxious, even going a bit political. Save it. Other annoyances are coaches yelling in the middle of performances (mainly Kelly and JHud) and also terrible sound mix . The latter has been a problem all along.
But I've always liked this show better than Idol and hope it sticks around.
New Amsterdam (2018)
For me, this show slowly but steadily got worse...
Season One was pretty good, and the cliffhanger at the end was excellent. I recorded all 9 episodes of Season 2 so I could binge! Well, I didn't make it through the end of episode 2 before I deleted everything. I don't watch to be preached at, but that wasn't the only problem. I realized watching it that with the exception of Reynolds, Bloom and maybe Max, I don't like the casting, and I strongly dislike the storylines. It just stopped working for me. This got a 2nd star because I really really like Reynolds.
The Kitchen (2014)
Fun way to start Saturday mornings
I watch or record this every Saturday, so obviously I like it. But with Marcela gone and only 4 left, the things that bug me about Sunny and Katie Lee are magnified. Sunny is awful, although lately she seems a wee bit toned down. But it's still too much, too loud, she's a food grabber, and she and talks/chews at the same time. Ugh.
Katie Lee drives me nuts, although I like her recipes a lot. It's the way she talks and rolls her r's ("very frrrrrresh and flavorrrrrrful"). Also, she's very pretty, but seems to enjoy wearing old bedspreads. That sounded a bit petty, but c'mon.
The guys are cool. They're my fave part.
9-1-1 (2018)
The good, the bad and the puzzling
The graph on the main page shows this quickly trending downward through Season 4 and I agree. I loved the first 3 seasons and also the beginning of 4, but midway through 4, the writers went wackaloon. I actually gave up on Episode 6 (the jinx one). For the most part, I think the casting is good, but Maddie is driving me nuts. She has zero personality and is so dramatic all the time! I'm glad it's about to resume and it's definitely watchable, but it could be so much better. Less Buck and Maddie would be a good start, and they need some new faces.
Designated Survivor (2016)
If only such big mistakes weren't made in the beginning...
I started watching this (real time) with my housemates, and I'm the only one who hung in there. The show had so much potential, but got off to a rocky start. I almost bailed on it myself, but an episode in the middle of Season One started the rehab process. Since then, it got better with every episode. The character development was much more realistic, dialog more believable, Jack Bauer started acting like Jack Bauer, and the crises were credible.
There's been some chatter about Netflix picking this up, and I really hope there's truth to that. I used to whine about Code Black and this show being on at the same time. Oy, I didn't know what real trouble is!
Code Black (2015)
Why this wasn't renewed
I just spent an unusual amount of time reading reviews, and the difference between early reviews and later ones is remarkable! I'm one who was onboard from day one and I loved it, but the reviews back in 2015 weren't favorable. Now suddenly it's a ratings bonanza for CBS.
I can't add to what others have said, except to mention I really hope someone picks this up. (Looking at you, Netflix, Prime, other major stations, even CBS, etc) . I follow a couple of the actors on Twitter and they're saying the same thing. There is simply no valid reason to cancel a show of this caliber.
Salvation (2017)
Add an "i" to the title and call this Salivation
Seriously?! I like to record 3 episodes of a new series, and then binge them. I just finished my 3 episodes, and I should have bailed out after the first 10 minutes, when 2 separate liaisons were shoved down my throat (along with some very wooden acting and stilted dialogue).
I'm not even that picky. Give me a threat to the planet and I can survive almost anything. Heck, I liked Gravity and it didn't even have a plot.
The reason this got 2 stars is I'm not quite done. There's a double episode this week, and...last chance! If I see so much as a come-hither look between 2 people who aren't already boinking each other, it's game, set, match.
The Newsroom (2012)
Wanted to see more!
By now, anyone who wants a plot summary can easily get it, so I'll dispense with that.
I'm bingeing this for the 2nd time. I still love what I loved and hate what I hated. Another way to put it: I still rewind when I miss a word of dialogue, but I still FF when a character is getting on my nerves.
Like almost everyone, I found Maggie offputting, but the performance I couldn't tolerate was Emily Mortimer as Mac. (I realize I'm out on a limb here, but so be it). Overact much?! In every scene, she's leaning forward, or leaning backward. Or she's standing tilted to the side. Arms are flaying everywhere. Oh, and does she own stock in Ugly Silk Blouse Ltd? This knocked it down to 8 out of 10, and I had to subtract another point for the ubiquitous office romance. Sure, it's fine to subtly hint at it, I guess, but when you have 2 main characters groping each other on a staircase in full view of the entire staff? C'mon, stay classy.
With all this whining out of the way, I'm really sad it didn't hang in there. I can see why this was not an easy show to produce, but dang. It was good while it lasted.
