Begotten (1989)
A must see
I am reading the comments and I am absolutely astounded of the peoples desire to "recognize" a piece of "art".
Like any sincere creation, founded in the need of an author for expressing himself, this film is,truly, a huge piece of "ART". BUT, only for this reason. Furthermore, this doesn't necessarily make it a good movie.
I find it very unfair that any critic to the film is countered whit the phrase: "hey! It's art, you just don't get it " Many of the people that say that haven't really made the effort of understanding the film for what it is and consider it exceptional just because they don't understand it, and because it is different from what they are used to.
I do agree whit the fact that "Begotten" is an extraordinary visual realization. Actually the only thing that really impressed me (and I m being subjective) is the exceptional cinematography, only black and white (no gray!). In 100 years of cinema, this black and white stands unique! This alone makes the film a "must see". The mood set, whit it's roots in the natural sounds joined whit the surreal images, is a special one. You feel you see something you are not suppose to see you feel privileged to have an open window to another dimension, to another world. But what do you really see? Well, after you wake up(and IF you wake up) form the stunning visual, you realize that what you see isn't that special. The movie it self, fails, and is only a mediocre try of expressing oneself, but done differently. And it's my opinion that the director, E. Elias Merhige, understood this to. Begotten was to be the first movie of a trilogy, a trilogy that Elias Merhige never made pursuing different projects.
"Begotten", if it were to be such a great movie, it would have, undoubtedly, started something, at least a trend in the cinema world. But the film just passed like a thought. I completely understand the need Elias Merhige had to make this movie, it's not easy battling this kind of inner demons, and he had to get them out. He was honest in making this film. BUT "Begotten" is nothing else, and nothing less, but an experimental movie, and it has to be taken as one. Don't make this movie more than it is.
See this movie! – but see it whit a clear mind.
Nunta muta (2008)
Good idea.
I've seen this movie in a pact theater , something that doesn't happen to often in Romania. The mood was great and I had a good feeling about this movie. I am sorry to say I was wrong.
It's certainly worth a look.But
I didn't like the movie
yes it was funny, it had a great, terrific story to tell, great cast! A decent budget, big for Romania, looks great, sounds OK... but as much as I love Horatiu Malaiele, I think this movie needed a better director.
Good story, but the way it was told was weak. The acting was not perfect, something that isn't OK, from such a cast, you expect a great performance, it wasn't bad, but should have been perfect.
The silent wedding scene is great, very funny, and the Highlight of the movie. The bad part is, that this isn't a funny movie, but it's built as one. This movie is a tragedy, and more then that, it's based on a true tragedy. It is impossible to get close to any of the characters, so it is impossible to really feel that last scene, the scene that should have been heartbreaking
the way this film was made, that last part of the movie doesn't mean anything.
Great idea of making you laugh and joyful then making you cry. Made me laugh , but couldn't possibly make anyone cry. This was a decent movie, should have been a lot better
it had a lot more in it. In the end it had a very Romanian feel about it, but of a higher Quality.
My score for it: About 6.8 IMDb average, 3.5/10 my score.
