The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1982)
limited showing on PBS- a masterpiece gone missing
This film has been made several times and is unique as it hints at the dark side of a Victorian father's attachment and need to control his 8 children after the death of his wife. It has made it this far as a tale to be told because it involves a love story between poets Elixabeth Barrett-Browning and Robert Browning ( a jug of wine and thou...) etc... the screenplay had some gumption and the heaviness of decades of repression that is a sickness all its own. This is a story of freedom, escape, stealth, and virtue as well.
Will someone PLEASE find out if it will ever be for sale anywhere again?
Hobson's Choice (1954)
this may be the only copy of this play left. what a shame
There are three versions of which I am familiar, the very best is one that has gone missing in the archives or among the products seen on PBS 20-30 years ago. This version with Charles Laughten stresses the character of the star rather than emphasizing the novel aspects of the storyline and the victory of love and perseverance demonstrated by a devoted couple who discover surprising and remarkable strengths through their ability to trust each other. This particular version is quite good, but is surpassed in characterization as well as screenplay adaptation by the one produced by PBS.Isn't there anyone, anywhere that knows how to obtain the PBS version?
The UFO Incident (1975)
one of the most underrated films ever to be shown on TV
This was an amazing piece of work for the 1970's. James Earl Jones added such authentic terror to the role of a person discovering forgotten incidents in this life experience, that anyone who has ever forgotten ( and then remembered, realizing they had forgotten) will find this portrayal chilling and unforgettable. His description of the bunny is particularly remarkable...innocent enough to the mind of a child, or an impatient listener. The wife in the story, is played with such stamina and confidence that you could wish to be her in a time of crisis. the natural bravery and assuredness brings a sense of order to the story. Someone please report that this will be distributed for sale sometime somewhere!
BBC Play of the Month: On Approval (1982)
amazingly funny for a period piece. the chemistry between players was the best!
where can i buy this at any price? there are so many less deserving things for sale that unless this one has gone to the Land of the Lost Films, please let me know if the company that owns it intends to make it available any time in the future. The chemistry between the 2 characters that the audience is supposed to like the least ends up creating the most delightful and ironic plot twist. Jeremy Brett is gone, but this work of his is one of his best. His starchiness was used to the fullest, and unlike the cryptic Holmes character he is so much known for, this is a romantic divergence from the typical role he played. In My Fair Lady, his singing voice was cut out of the film, and all that was left was fluff.... see this one ANYONE...if you can find it.
