Challengers (2024)
Ended in Deuce
I can't recall ever missing a sports movie, even if some were boring-I still watched them all. The reason? I've been a sports player all my life, and I still play, although I'm not a professional. From school to college and now, I was a soccer player, got scholoship in sports so you know how much sports I played, now I also coach so I know that aspect of sports as well. I've played soccer predominantly, but over the last 10-12 years, I've dabbled in various sports like tennis, volleyball, racketball, pickleball, and table tennis.
The point is, anyone who's played sports knows the competition, tension, and hard work involved, even if it's not at a professional level.
That said, I eagerly anticipated watching this movie. As a tennis enthusiast, I hoped for something better than "Matchpoint," as I've yet to see a truly realistic sports movie, especially about tennis. Of course not counting some autobiography or based on real events and person. I am talking about part ficitious and novel kind of movies.
If I want to watch based on real life then, King Richard was a good Tennis movie.
Moreover, the movie boasted some big names like Luca Guadagnino and Zendaya.
Honestly, this movie had so much potential. Where do I begin? It could have been one of the best sports movies ever made, but instead, it fell flat, ending up just slightly above average.
Firstly, it's a fictional movie, but not entirely. Anyone who's competed at the college, state, or even local level knows the immense effort required from juniors to grand slam contenders.
The characters aren't entirely fictional, except for some parts.
The elements that could have been great went sideways, diminishing the overall interest and potential of the movie.
The direction was good, not great. I didn't understand the choice of background music-it seemed heavy metal-esque, unnecessary for creating the right atmosphere. Additionally, while the depiction of ball angles, volleys, and hitting was innovative, it looked more CGI than authentic.
Furthermore, there wasn't much effort put into capturing the technicalities of the tennis game. The biggest flaw, for me, was that the movie should have revolved around tennis as the main theme, with the love triangle and drama as the backdrop. Instead, it ended up feeling more like a romantic comedy, with the love triangle taking center stage and tennis becoming secondary.
The saving grace of the movie was Zendaya. Her acting was commendable, and her portrayal of tennis was believable-not like some bimbo holding a racket. I'm pretty sure she must have undergone tennis lessons and mostly justified the role of a tennis prodigy whose career was ruined due to an accidental injury.
Another major gripe that ruined the overall interest in the movie was the presentation. I don't know what Luca was thinking. I've seen hundreds of movies that show scenes in chronological order, but this movie was so disjointed. It kept jumping back and forth, so much so that viewers either got confused or lost interest. I mean, showing flashbacks a few weeks, days, and years back within the first 5-10 minutes of the movie runtime?
The overall winner was Zendaya, along with Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist.
Overall, I was very excited for the first 10-15 minutes, then shocked for the next 15-20 minutes at how the plot was deteriorating, and finally disappointed with the overall execution.
Lucas, you had one of the best opportunities, but you lost it.
Zendaya was the best part of the movie, followed by Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist.
The Virtuoso (2021)
Decent hitman movie, not as bad as the ratings.
Well, I am sucker for movies which are atmospheric, like this one, an idyllic town settings, cold winter nights and mystery and some thrill with slow enough phase to build the characters.
The American and a few other movies like this, not necessarily everyone cup of tea.
Majority find the phase and development too slow and that's one of the reasons movies like this one and The American gets very low ratings.
But, grab a tea, on a cold night and you will enjoy.
Not every hitman movie supposed to be edge of the seat 90 minutes of boom boom, there are enough James Bond, Tom Cruise movies already there .
Sometimes, you want more than machine killer kind of hitman movie like the original mechanic, similar phase and settings.
The only issue with the bad ratings or when you see ratings that's are so diverse from 3 and 1 Star to 6 and 8 stars, you might just go and check the movie, you may like it or hate it
I almost gave up but, then, I read the plot and gave it a try and already watched twice.
I definitely wouldn't give 8 stars for this movie, but just above average rating of 6 stars, because I find this movie fairly entertaining and decent thriller with atmospheric settings.
Anson Mount did a really good job but, I personally thinks Abbey Cornish is totally miscast and to some extent Anthony Hopkins too, though Anthony as usual justify his very small part brilliantly, but mostly wasted, not necessarily miscast though
Overall, 5 Star ratings is not justify, give it a try you won't be disappointed.
Lust Stories 2 (2023)
One good, two OK and one really worst of 4 lust stories.
Will, out of 4 lust stories 2 anthropology, one (mirror by Konkana Sen) was the best.
Second best was Tilchatta ( Surabh Chaudhary)
Third one was sex with ex ( Ankit)
Worst of all was made for each other (R Balki).
The Mirror showed not only new form of voyeurism, it also showed that sex and pleasure are not limited to a particular class, it could be anyone and it's reality of India.
The confrontation between Tillotoma Shome and Amruta was really good and the ending was equally good. Konkana Sen direction really brings both actors acting to the front and center.
Tilchatta both Kajol and Kumud Mishra acted well, not sure but, why Kajol took that role, but I like the twisted ending.
The story was really old, an old Lord still living in past glory, even though they become pennyless they still thinks they are king, plus there way of thinking that every woman is a tool including their own wives.
Sex with ex was bearable just because of Tamannaah raw beauty and sex appeal, otherwise I really don't know what she saw in that below average looking Vijay Verma.
Neither the story nor the acting was great, worse was the direction and potray of the atmospheric village.
Made for each other was really the worst of all.
It's like condom ad stretch over half an hour.
Lykke-Per (2018)
The Eccentric Genius
Well, Greetings from a fellow eccentric...
I got lucky that one day sitting and browsing movies first on Amazon Prime and then, on Netflix, I was definitely not in the mood for a cheesy love story, the genre I literally hate, the Nicolas Spark kind of movies with the exception of Notebook. I also detest most comedies. So I was in the mood for a different kind of movie, a couple of weeks back I watched Pale Blue Eyes, my kind of genre, the Psychological thriller, and on top of that I really loved the Atmospheric movies a lot.
Somehow Netflix suggested me this movie, The Fortunate Man, I read the brief details of the movie and played it, I usually go to IMDb for more reviews and all, but this time I was in the mood to watch an atmospheric, tragic and different kind of movies, not the usual Hollywood.
My goodness, I am glad I watched the movie, though it was considered a long and slow phase movie, but, to be honest, I really enjoyed the credit roll.
Not going to boast about myself or someone I knew, but this movie was close to me more than anything because I truly know the pain of being an eccentric and more so if you're eccentric and a genius.
The pain, the suffocation of not being valued, recognized, and understood, the restlessness, the banality of the people surrounding you, all these emotions and pain showed very beautifully.
Though a lot of people complain about this movie being a bit long, trust me, if it is not this long or longer, then, the character, the pain, and the development all would be rushed and the end product would be good, but not his great.
Because the director took time to develop the character, the rollercoaster ride of his pain, suffocation, the geniuses and emotions of being dragged down, the lack of expressing love and being with someone for a long time, all explained and showed beautifully.
This movie would be understood by someone who has gone through one of these things, being born poor, but has a burning desire to get out of poverty and be something to stand in society with the help of the only tool that is available, which is Education. Or being a genius with so many ideas that people around you think, you're either crazy or too radical.
Esben Smed was beautiful and amazing given his 110% to this role and totally justified, though at times his facial expressions were fall flat, but overall really great acting. Everyone acted well in their respective roles, but both Esben and Katrine Greis-Rosenthal were brilliant.
The entire summary of this movie was in the last 4-5 minutes of dialogues between Esben and Katherine, the facial expression, the emotions, and the way they finally understood each other and appreciate the time they spent with each other and the way she recognized that he wasn't meant to be with her and he recognized and realized in the end that, he was just not fit to live with others without inflicting pain and hurt them, so he finally decided to abandon the human relations and live his last days in the wilderness of course with the pain that he couldn't able to fulfill his dream and project, but at the same time he came close it but, as eccentric and genius people have a drawback, their ego, their pride, and nature finally take them down and Sidenus was no exception.
It's must watch for anyone who understands the character and don't mind the length of the movie which developed slowly.
Dahaad (2023)
A must watch series
Well, first of all, thanks to Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti for bringing in one of the raw series that portray India in a light that we usually don't see, the real India.
We have seen recently a really good series, both on Amazon Prime and Netflix that portrayed the stories of killings and serial killers, which also somewhere tried to show the social diseases of India like discrimination of Low Caste, Muslims, and Minorities in India to some extent, but Dahaad beautifully portrayed those things, blended well with the story, the atmospheric settings of small towns, suburbs of India, and how the mindset of people works there.
It beautifully showed how the High Caste does discriminates, oppression, and prosecution of Low Caste, Muslims, and other minorities and how the system works for them, how deeply these things have been ingrained in every aspect of society from the Education system to sports, to the Police and judiciary.
Sonakshi Sinha did an awesome job and she literally did her homework to play a small-town girl from Rajasthan who in spite of having a job that gives her power, but still subject to discrimination in her day-to-day life.
But, Vijay Varma and Gulshan Devaiah did an excellent job and they both played their character almost flawlessly.
But, they could do a better job of editing from episode 6th onwards as it seems they dragged a bit.
Though the series claimed the story and characters are fictitious as they usually do, these kinds of killings happening in India a lot, and it's real.
Please don't go by the low ratings of a few, watch yourself and decide.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Love it or Hate kind of a Movie
Well, I go to the movies with my kids every now and then, especially when they insist on how great those movies are, in the majority of those cases I literally enjoy the movies sitting with my kids with popcorn and drinks along with blankets and good movies like Black Panther, Coco, Up and several others. This time around my daughter dragged me to this movie.
Just within 15 minutes into the movie I started feeling sleepy and after 30 minutes I was struggling to keep my eyes open, there are two things that kept me awake one the jarring outburst of sound, and second, I don't want my daughter to feel bad that I am really not enjoying the movie.
Well, I watched the movie several months back, the question is why not wrote the review then, well, as you guess, I am literally furious after last night's Oscar awards when this movie bagged every major award including a Best picture which literally boiled my blood, so please bear my rant and hence this review.
If we remember a couple of years back Academy awarded The Parasite as the best movie, well, I liked the movie to be honest, except I still don't think that movie deserved the Best Picture award.
But, this nonsense, overhyped, overacting, over VFX, basically everything over and as the name of the movie, all over the place, everywhere and without any sense of storyline, character development or cinematography, or direction.
Every now and then, our friends got divided on a few movies where a few friends thought a movie is really great and gives like 5 stars, but, the majority of us, think otherwise and give 1 star, then during the discussion, we asked those who gave 5 stars what they see that we couldn't able to see, they usually just couldn't justify or answer that question, it seems like they just try to look cool and think that if they give 5 stars to some stupid dump movie, they might look very intelligent.
This is exactly the case with this movie and I do not even have a shred of doubt, those who gave more than 5 to 6 stars, didn't even understand this movie, they just think that giving one or two stars would make them look stupid, so let us give 8-9-10 stars and look intelligent, but the reality is something different if you ask them few straight questions about this movie they won't able to answer.
And make no mistake this movie is not something like the Inspection kind where we were divided, but not as bad as this movie, we mostly ended up giving 3 stars out of 5, but others gave 5 stars, so we were kind of in the middle. But with this overhyped movie, we are firm 1 star and no one can convince us or is able to convince us through anything yet, to increase our rating to at least 2 stars, because they simply can't, there is no base on which they can able to do that, in simple term, this is the garbage movie and a waste of time and money.
It seems like Academy judges have a new trend of giving awards to some crazy Asian movies to look cool and intelligent, here is the news Academy, please go and watch the movie and just don't give an award for the sake of looking cool or intelligent, in fact, you look more stupid than a 6-year-old.
Well, the best part of the movie, of course the ending, not because the movie finished, well, that really was the best part, but in my case, my daughter realized that I didn't enjoy the movie a bit, but she said something which made it all worth. Thanks, Baba, I know you don't enjoy the movie and I dragged you into this movie, but you just sit and pretend like you were enjoying the movie just for me...I love you Baba.
Zimna wojna (2018)
Artistic, cinematic but, missing key.
Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, who has penchant of making gloomy background movies in black and white. Which works really good as most of these movies stories from around WWII or after war during cold war era and when his own country was under iron clad Soviet Communist rule.
The story is of two lovers in the cold war era when the cultural difference and life style was very different or at least the way West used to portray from the era.
Life may be bit harsh during that time in East Europe, but it didn't mean they were all sad, depressed and suicidal infact one more thing to observed, many times people from the era missed the old life, as per them life many be bit harsh or minimal but, they were happy as not much greediness or materialistic of western world exists and people were happy with simple life.
So this story was about two lovers Wiktor and Zula who met under certain circumstances and fall in love.
Though that movie present as a canvas in time and space, what it lacks was key element.
Right from the beginning their love seems doomed.
Wiktor wanted to leave communist Poland and was under the impression that Zula would follow him. Though Zula supposed to come from village area, but practically she was more mature beyond her age and understands things better and it seems the with little background into her childhood she was much better control on what she wants, compared to Wiktor which we came to know as we progress though the movie.
So Wiktor left for Paris and Zula stayed in Poland, while Wiktor never get the same fame and respect in Paris and still feels outsider, Zula eventually became famous singer.
These lovers meet time and again, but never able to stay together for long. They had to leave for various reasons and then, longed for each other and then meet again and then leave, finally they got together in the end, but the destination of their doomed love looks exhausted, and not really complete.
There journey of love looks much better than, their destination.
As it seems in reality a true love is the one that never completes and I guess to me the end where they finally say good bye and leave at train station would have much more impact than, when they finally got married and sit with clueless looks on their faces like now that or from here where? Like they found the destination, but don't know what to do with it or like the fleeing and brief encounter was much better than, this forever and ever kind of relationship.
So basically, the movie missed two key things, when they entire movie presents as tragic love story, then it should end like one.
Second, character development, the director never invested in their character much and more concentrate on there lives when they are together, rather than what's their life when they were alone, also they big miss was the harsh realities of cold war.
The director based entire movie on cold war era, but hardly showed the life from that era.
It seems in the end that, this love story could happened in any era with some modification.
Overall a good watch for cinematography, scenery and artist visuals.
Sita Ramam (2022)
Beautiful Love Story with Beautiful Kashmir as backdrop
Well, first of all, this might be a bit long review, I usually don't leave long reviews, but I am compelled for this movie.
The most important thing about this movie is if one understands received two kinds of hatred and I will explain it as we go, so please read on.
Both hatred received by Hindu extremist and right wing Nationalist.
All the reviews of one, two, three stars are from them.
The First kind of Hatred because the director and writer Hanu Raghavapudi tried to show the truth about Kashmir.
Second kind, from same Hindu terrorists, in Today's India boycotting anything, which has Muslim name to it, so these Hindu extremist giving deliberate negative reviews because the lead character Ram played by a Muslim actor Dulquer Salmaan and that's why majority negative review, since they can't openly said anything about it or about his brilliant acting to be honest he carried entire movie on his shoulders.
I am from Kashmir and I grow up in 80s and 90s and unlike the Fake Movie Kashmir files made by Hindu terrorist and Nationalist, this movie touches few sensitive elements of Kashmir and these days in India, where Hindu nationalist wouldn't allow any movie, any TV series to show the truth about Kashmir, but bravo to writer and Director Hanu Raghavapudi tried to show the truth and reality of Indian army atrocities of killing minors, raping minor girls in front of their parents and forcing brothers to rape their sisters which of course you won't see anywhere.
The lead characters of Ram and Sita played by Dulquer Salmaan and. Mrunal Thakur were brilliant.
Having said that, the movie was not without flaws like every movie this movie had few flaws, like Rashmika Mandanna overacting. Some melodrama which is fine that goes with the story, the movie dragged a little bit, the editor could have done a better job.
Overall, a solid 7 star movie, so question is why I gave 9 stars, to be honest to counter the Hindu extremist hatred I had to bump to 9 stars.
Go and watch the movie, it's beautiful with awesome cinematography and beautiful acting and chemistry between Dulquer Salmaan & Mrunal Thakur. Mrunal Thaukar really looked beautiful and she did an awesome job for Sita.
HIT: The First Case (2022)
Cheap Remake both the so called Telugu and Hindi from B-Grade Hollywood movies
I have watched both high rated Telugu the so called Original and then, Hindi re-make.
In reality the Original Telugu HIT movie was really bad, may be good for all those Telugu audiences who have never seen b-grade cheap Hollywood thrillers.
Just amazed at one thing, what was the point of making a re-make of a bad movie and make a worse re-make.
Anyway, too many plot holes to count, in fact the entire movie both Telugu and Hindi, were just a copy paste of 10-15 B-Grade Hollywood movie scenes. A PTSD cop, with some phobia, in this phobia of fire, drinking problem, but very intelligent thinking, nightmares, trying to connect two cases, one of the case involved loved one. All the cliches and plot holes.
Overall, really bad movies, bad acting and really bad direction.
Only those people who have never seen any cheap Hollywood thrillers, or those people with only two brain cells can give these movies a more than 2-3 stars.
Don't waste time.
Prey (2022)
Naru the Predator
Well, I have read both the negative and positive reviews after watching the movie and I guess the reviews that give 9 or 10 stars are trying to compensate those give 1 or 2 stars. In reality, both are wrong.
If you compare to the original Arnie Predator, then, you can't watch this movie, if you watch it with an open mind, then, you can really enjoy it.
Remembers after the Arnie original movie, they came up with Predator 2 and 3 and then, recent Predators, for some reason Predators with some similar landscape and story line got good reviews, but people are divided for this movie.
This movie was mostly independent, not relating to the original, but took the idea of the original and gone back to basic, except the hunters are native Americans.
The cinematography was top notch, so was the direction. But, it has its flaws, the CGI sometimes looks animated and not every character played their part like in Original one.
Having said that, this movie was very entertaining, with thrill, action and atmospheric with the great location of the great plains.
Some people find it bit slow, but I guess, the Dan the director wanted to build the tension.
Overall, Amber Midthuder carried the entire movie and she did and excellent job. The message was clear, on one hand we had Arnold,Carl and Bill Duke kind of people who were fighting the beast predator which people find it justifiable because after all the Predator was huge and savage in nature. But, if you look closely, even in the original Arnie, he didn't kill and defeat the predator by his muscle or strength, but with agility, cleverness and planning. Finding the weakness of the predator and use against it.
The majority negative reviews are that, the Nuru character didn't have big blazing guns, big muscles and strength to take on the Predator kind of beast, but people forget that, in the original and in the recent Predators, the Predator didn't get killed by sheer strength but, with sheer planning and attacking the weak points.
So Dan wanted to show that a not so muscular native American woman who wanted to prove herself that she is a clever hunter, who are not only smart, but, quick and able to think in a tough situation and can turn the tables on prey.
And Amber did that part very well.
The movie didn't look B-grade or at the same time The Revenant likes.
This movie definitely falls between these two.
I was clearly surprised by this movie and I really enjoyed it.
I would say ignore the negative reviews and go and watch it, you can decide.
Hridayam (2022)
A Nostalgic Journey from College life to Adult life
Well, this is my third or fourth Malayam Movie and I am starting to feel that South Indian industry is more to offer than Bollywood baseless movies these days. In this age and era, Tamil, Telugu and Malyalam producers and directors bringing stories from 90s and early 2000s, which attract large crowd base like me, who can relate to these movies because we grow up in 90s and we proudly call ourself 90s kids.
Having said that, the editor of this movie could do a better job and edit the movie by shortening it at least 20-25 mins and then, it could be really a masterpiece of Engineering college life into adulthood.
Can't imagine they showed a scene where he lied to hot chick that he is not committed or having a steady girlfriend, how many times we did, so many times, likewise there were so many scenes where it touches the practical chords. Like lying to wife that meeting a college friend, which in fact happened to be an ex-girl friend from college. Re-union parties after 10 and 15 years where your eyes were looking for that one person which never showed up or when showed up you don't want to face.
The strong points of this movie.
1. Overall story and theme of Engineering College life, showed very close to the real life, like canteen, student life, dorm life, flirting and when you think you finally found a girl with whom you can spend the rest of your life only to end in tragedy.
2. The Music by Hesham Abdul Wahab, to be honest, I never heard of his name or anything, but, after I finished the movie, I felt like there is something which make this movie awesome, even though it's too long, what it was...well, yes, I got it, it was soothing, composing and almost divine like music by Wahab, now I am going to look for his other work.
3. Acting, well, everyone deserves a thumbs up, Pranav even though the leading cast of Pranav and Kalyani are the son and daughter of Malayam top actor and director, but they really have talent. Pranav was good in his role, Kalayani was good for what it required of her, she almost introduced half way through, but she justified cuteness factor and then, moving into a wife and mother in a small span of allocated time. Darshana really did an awesome job of a girlfriend to good friend to a jealous friend and finally took the life as it comes and that's the reality of life.
The weak point.
Length of the movie. For close to 3 hours is too much, if its edited to two and half hours then it would be great.
Well, the reason for this review is because this movie is very close to my heart, because it seems like I was just watching my life on screen. In fact, I have been asked to watch this movie by a few of my Engineering college friends who were not only close friends of mine and they still are, they know about my love life and they played a good part in it, unfortunately, my ending is very similar and they in fact told me, did I write the story?
If I wrote the story, it would be very similar.
If you want to re-visit your Engineering and college life go watch.
Peter and the Farm (2016)
Farm and Farm life up close
Well, I usually watch something poignant and profound and something that lingers long after movie finish, I guess it's just Sunday late afternoon's mood.
So, when I see this title, I immediately play the documentary. Note that for almost 99% of the content I watch like movies and series and all, I always read IMDb reviews and ratings. But, why I play this documentary instantly because, I can relate to it, how? Well, first we friends purchased a ranch some 7 years back, and to be honest, before we own the ranch, we didn't have a clue about how beautiful they look for passers-by while traveling country side, but how much work, what kind of hard life it is, we only know when we live that life.
That's one the reason I played to see what does it present.
To my surprise it did show the harsh reality of farm life, farmer life and how hard they work, every day, in harsh weather.
Because, in farming, you constantly fight with one element, that is nature. People like me who lives in urban areas with a nice front yard and back yard, which mowed down by lawn mower every other week and the nice climate control house, never able to understand how hard is to fight the nature when it start taking over things, when you don't keep it in check.
Here we see a Peter, a genius, an eccentric, who spend almost all his life on his farm and entirely dedicated his life to farming. His knowledge is like an encyclopedia of farming. To be honest, while watching this documentary, I really feel like going to his farm spend a few months and get all his knowledge about farming.
At the top of that, I said he was an eccentric, because he pushed people away and now he is old, alcoholic and ALONE.
I know, how it felt to be in those big spaces which runs in acres, with just a few lights and a house with total silent and you don't have anyone to talk. I experience that, when I had to spend few nights in my farm unfortunately alone because I stuck there and at that time I feel the horrors of the night life of a farm when you're alone in the dark, with just your animals and acres of land.
I can't imagine how would Peter survives all those years alone in that farm? And that also explains his mental health issues and talking about committing suicide. During day time he was almost busy, but nights must be haunting for him unless he drunk himself to sleep.
The farm that looks so picturesque and beatutiful during the day, would be scary and haunting during nights.
The documentary potrait Peter and his farm which is like two bodies and one soul, you can take out Peter from the farm or farm out of Peter.
In the end, the documentary was really, sad, tragic, one person stuggle to keep everything together or in the process of having its own way, destroyed his own life by isolating himself from the world. Pushed the loved one away, though he was angry, having drinking problem and an eccentric personality, you still feel sad for him.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Not a revenge Movie and not a comedy
Sometime I feel obligated to, review a movie, especially when people who don't belong to a particular genre, come and gave horrible reviews, they don't even understand.
Like I watched 4 hours movie called Justice League, for me, it's literally horrible and when I came to see the reviews I saw most of the reviews of 9 or 10 stars. I didn't want to give a 1 star review, because I know I don't like that superhero genre and I don't belong there, so I kept quiet, but the same Super Hero genre people come to serious cinema and gave bad reviews its obligation to negate them.
The subject of this movie is kind taboo, swap mostly under the carpet. Yes, I am a man and yes, I have seen and also, I believe the way during college life, how boys tried to be macho and I blame the upbringing, parents never taught their macho boys to respect women in general, respect girls and their boundaries.
The summary of the movie is conversation between,Carey Mulligan character and dean, the entire movie sum up and it was so good, she exactly knew that, the girl named Nina been violated by boys and she was also aware of video, but, she also told Cassie that, she can't ruin the careers of boys for every accusation no matter even that accusations happened to be true. Those boys could be doctors, football players, college stars, baseball players and what not, and there are low lives lawyers who took money and ruined the lives of girls, even though they exactly knew that the predators they defend committed heinous crimes, in the movie that lawyer couldn't able to sleep, but in real life unfortunately these kind of lawyers sleep like babies, I sincerely hope karma catch them.
The acting of Carey Mulligan was top notch and Oscar worthy, the direction, editing and cinematography was excellent.
I literally went to the cinema expecting I spit on your grave kind of movie and thought it another revenge movie where men wronged the woman and she took revenge in horrific ways. But, I was dumbfounded when the movie ends and it will remain with me for a few days.
People who are giving negative reviews, calling it B-grade revenge movie are those who watch either Comedy movies, B-grade movies or Superhero movies, so its obvious they don't get the subject matter and how an not so innocent act of few mins could ruin the lives of so many people and they didn't even pause to realize the mistake they did or the crime they commit.
Bombay Begums (2021)
The culture might be true, but doomed one
Not sure, it's seems like Netflix is hell bent on showing confusing culture. No, I am not saying whatever they are showing is far from reality. Those who were saying nothing of this sort happened in India, India still the epitome of Eastern values and culture, then, either they live in caves or simply hypocrites. Whatever it's showed it's happening and much more than what's showed. Still, the point is, why show something that's failed from the get go. They were saying that a successful woman, must drink, have sex with anyone, in order to advance in career, difficulty in maintaining simple relationship, they can't be faithful to partners, by any society standard they are implying that, they have lose character's. They can't maintain work life balance, can't maintain family or kids, basically their personal life is a big mess.
The message that are trying to give or portrayed a liberated, so called independent, today's woman image, it's total failure and utter crap.
That's not even remotely strong women image, a woman who maintain work, family, kids. Who support her husband in thick and thin, who raise disciplined and educated kids, who sacrifice lots of things to held the family together. Not, the type who sleep around with men, obliterated and smoke kind chimney.
Alone (2020)
It was very close to be rated 7 stars.
The movie was very close to be one of the best serial killer, cat-mouse thrillers.
The story was good, the acting was really good from both the main characters, the location of Oregon, the West Coast wooded area was good, the picturization was great.
The good things about the movie was not adhering to the cliche script, there are dozens of these kind of movies come and go almost every couple of weeks and almost 99% flop because of same treatment of damsel in distress cliche scenes when main character make one after the other stupid after stupid moves, scream, run naked through the wood and unnecessary gore, violence and sexually pervertness. This movie didn't even go that route which was the positive thing and probably the only positive thing which is the reason I gave 5 stars and I could end up giving 7 stars easily if it's not for the following negative points.
There was hardly any character development.
Whether its West Coast, East Coast Canadian wooded and forest areas, it's really, really difficult to locate anyone so quickly in thick woods.
But, in this movie, the serial killer was always within a few yards from the victim at any given instance, it was almost like he inserted the GPS chip and following her with GPS device, at one stage I thought when he knocked out the main character, he might have put a gps locator inside, or at least they should have showed that to make it more practical the way he was keep locating her, even after 7-8 hours.
At one instance, she passed out for the entire night and next morning he was just there?
It's almost frustrating and all the real things about movie been varnished with this unrealistic within yards chased.
The second most negative thing about the movie was the motive of a serial killer. Majority serial killers catch their prey for sexual gratification, or make them feel powerful. When the serial killer kidnapped her, he didn't abuse her sexually or physically, also the holding chamber didn't show any past victims were there or any other evidence.
Overall, the movie was one time watch, but it could be a really good movie if it's not for above items.
The Current War (2017)
Hollywood Electrocuted Tesla with is own A/C Current
Hollywood becomes the epi-center of inaccurate historical facts, pushing their own agenda and showing the villain of real life as a hero of reel life.
Alfonso & Michael Mitnick should keep the story between Edison and Westinghouse and Kept the ingenious, inventor the real life hero of Electricity and A/C motor inventor out of the movie, rather than depicting inaccurate facts about him and insult his legacy.
If American truly wanted to do justice with all the wrongdoings they did with Nicola Tesla they should dim or switch off lights for one minute not for Edison, but for Tesla. His contribution in the field of Electricity, physics and science was insulted, his talent was brutally crushed by the American system, the egoistic and arrogant nature of Edison and Education system.
Also, though Edison was shown as a man of principal, but, in reality he steals the ideas from Tesla and kicked him out. He tried to malign the name of Westinghouse, another pioneer in Engineering, hydraulic breaks in Trains and so many other things.
The movie, agenda has been clear, just showing American Edison as Hero, in reality it was Tesla the real hero and to some extend Westinghouse.
Tesla was real eccentric genius.
Cold Pursuit (2019)
Just watched for Liam Neeson
Well, I have watched the Norwegian original movie not one twice, because I am sucker for movies which show the winter beauty and brutality at the same time, I really like the premise of snow and mountains. I was expecting Liam's The Grey performance, the settings of this movie is almost same, winter, ice and mountains.
Except I was disappointed for two things, first Liam looked bored and didn't put his efforts properly. Second, they shouldn't copy the original movie frame by frame. The remake should take the theme and advance itself and give something new to it. This isn't remake in true sense.
Also, the humor didn't really done properly.
Those who gave this movie more than 6 stars either not seen the original movie or die hard fan of Liam Neeson. I gave 6 stars because of Liam Neeson and premise of this movie.
I feel Neeson was much better, natural in The Grey plus that movie settings were really brutal , none of these movies comes anywhere close to revenant though.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Almost perfect...I mean almost
Well, this movie was totally a different Genre compare to all the CGI movies these day running's. Basically, after seeing all these so called comical movies, it's been a long time when a movie with real humans, with real human issues, real human tragedies to watch is a feast. I believe the major set back for this movie was, when the director decided to give it a black comedy genre. Basically, this could be as good as Francis McDormand Fargo, but I believe she still should win Oscar for her performance in this movie too. This movie shouldn't treat as black comedy. Everything about this movie, cinematography, direction, acting especially all the leading characters, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell and of course the very best Francis McDormand did an awesome job. Except with a few major flaws, first and foremost the comedy part of the movie, there isn't anything wrong in few dialogues, but labeling it black comedy for me took away the essence of this movie, this movie could be very, very tragic. Second, it could be possible that a racist cop could have a change of heart from a dead Supervisor letter, but practically not possible. So, if both characters allowed to grow and Woody character instead of just letter showed his love by his actions, could have made it more believable. Overall, the movie was really awesome and one of the best so far in 2017, especially amongst all those humans animated super hero movies. Before this I really like Jackie Chan The Foreginer.
Shutter Island (2010)
Which would be worse - to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?
Well, pretty much good, better, best and worst has been said about this movie in 950+ reviews and it's kind of rare that reviews are somehow divided because as it happened after watching this movie my friend and I was totally engrossed and left the theater not knowing what really hit us. Because we were not prepared for anything like this from Scorsese or Dicaprio, we know they both are capable but not on this scale. At the same time two other friends outrightly rejected this movie as anything but great. So, that's how the audience would be divided you either liked it or you hate it. Also, those who don't like it much doesn't mean they don't get this movie or they don't know how to decide the movie, I believe they don't want something this hard to take it easy. They must enjoy comedy and light tragedy, but not something of this scale. Because I know my friends they can't digest dark movies with lots of emotions, emotions that involve tragedy, not some dog got killed and like that. And, by GOD from first shot to last shot this movie getting bleaker and bleaker until the last line which not only sums up the entire movie, but, it was so sad and bleak that I couldn't able to get off the seat even after it finished for few Min's.
Making a tragic and dark movies is one thing, but making people feel the atmosphere, hopelessness, emptiness, the coldness, the suffocation feeling is not everyone's cup of tea, but Scorsese nailed it and you can almost start feeling yourself in that asylum and confined in that wall, you could almost feel the wet and cold walls of that Island and couldn't help yourself but look for an air to breathe.
Mind that I didn't say a word about the story or what that movie is all about. It's about the human mind and complexity of human relation.
Also, most important if you watch this movie as simply like Paranormal activity kind of horror, then you will wouldn't get the point or movie at all. At the same time if you don't give attention to the overall atmosphere, the time period, especially the dialog then you would definitely miss the movie and that's happening with my friend they totally missed the point because they watched it unprepared like any other horror movie genre. But, this movie is not a horror movie in a sense, but, it's scary to the core, not jump scary, but you would question the life of human and what human is capable of.
Each and every dialogue are weighted and worth every second, but few of the dialog just stayed with me.
When Warden told Teddy: If I was to sink my teeth into your eye right now, would you be able to stop me before I blinded you? Teddy said give it a try with a look. My goodness, that shows the true human nature.
But the best one as per me is the one before credit rolls.
When Teddy finally realized who he was and why he was here and his real identity, he looked at Chuck and said: Which would be worse - to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Christoph Waltz 10 Stars Movie 1 Stars
Well, I can't write the review without repeating some of the reviews most negative reviews which I found only honest reviews. All other Reviews are either from Studio people and friends of Director. Beside that the most amazing and annoyed thing is how come a respectable site like IMDb gave this worthless crap, well, not totally, with all due respect to Christoph Waltz 10 minutes, gave this movie a 8.3 stars seriously which would cast the doubt on very credibility I have on IMDb reviews. Though I understand that sites need money to run and every now and then they compromise some ethics and take money to give high rating, it's all business at the end of the day. These days nothing is reliable let alone reviews on IMDb. This movie is nothing but bad and worst kind of propaganda movie I have seen on WWII. Kind of boring showing the same crap again and again, Jews Victims, the brutality of the Nazis and all. Well, it seems that the Oscar jury mostly consists of aging Jews because every crap movie based on WWII brutality, brutality against Jews only, no movie that shows how much Russians/Germans/Japanese or Non-Jewish people killed which account for more than Jewish ever gets an Oscar. So Quentin Tarantino thought that in his long career, he doesn't have much chance of getting an Oscar so he studied and found out that the easiest way to get Oscar is to make a movie about WWII, showed the same crap of brutality of Nazis against Jews as subject matter get an Oscar which of course boost the career of any director in Hollywood.
Watched over 100 movies on WWII subject and every movie whether or not based on fact shows same dumb things, how come Germans get themselves killed like a bunch of fools, in this movie they just have two guards to protect hundreds of top notch German officers including Hitler?
Anyway, bottom line so much has been written negative about this movie still wondering when 3 out of 5 reviews are negative never seen in history that the movie still gets 8 stars. Doesn't its shame that when a movie given a 8.3 star ratings count with some of the greatest movies? How come such a crass and worthless movie like this count with those movies, isn't that an insult to all the great actors and directors and people behind those great movies? Next time IMDb should be carful before jack up the rating, not only they are losing credibility, but they are insulting the great legacy of Hollywood.
In Bruges (2008)
Capture the essence of humanity and The Bruges
Yes, Only few movies I wrote reviews about and among those few only very, very few I gave above 7 ratings and In Bruges is among very, very few. Watched it several times and realized that I had to review this beautiful movie, which in short span capture the essence of humanity, guilt, emotions, friendship and humor. I could go and on and write 10 pages, but those 10 pages would be just repetitive of most of the 400 plus comments which already written about this movie. Excellent and outstanding performance by Colin Farrell, he surpassed his London Boulevard performance in this movie. Brendan Gleeson, one of the memorable work. Short but the integral part done by Ralph Fiennes, exceed expectations. Supported well, by other actors. The way Martin McDonagh captured the sleeping and pristine beauty of Bruges with background of intense story was simply outstanding.
Even midgets were funny and brilliant.
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
The fault in the ratings
Well, IMDb please, please, please....I trust your ratings so much so that, every time whether its in Cinema hall or on Netflix or anywhere else, even before renting DVD from red box I always check IMDb ratings before deciding whether to watch or not. When I see 8+ rating. I didn't bother to click few pages to read the user reviews seriously my bad, I wish I would have time to read few pages instead of blindly believing the some paid reviews and paid rating by IMDb.My cousins were pulling and honking car horn waiting outside so I just gave in. Lesson learned. I wont trust on IMDb ratings again. Also, I was not furious on my money or my time being wasted like that, but did anyone ever thought giving 8+ ratings would put this movie in the league of Godfather,The Shawshank Redemption,The Lord of the ring series,Good Fellas, Star wars and likes, its utter disrespect and blasphemous for these great movies to put this good for nothing movie and listed and counted among them. People might be thinking or comment that this reviews comes from insensitive person or I don't have heart. Seriously my cousins and I seriously tried to cry but we all end up laughing along with few other fellow like us and also got the wrath of some bull...teenagers who saw this movie as some sacred text like Bible being translate to movie?
OK, now come to the story our pretty Shailene Woodly got cancer and dying very depressive, but why every time they end up in support group and all the good Christian and the worst of the movie was not her, in fact she save the movie else we all would be out of cinema hall in first 15 minutes, the worst part of the movie was that Chocolate face Ansel Elgort seriously this guy can only be her brother and he should stick to brother's and kind of looks because he is so emotionless even on most emotional scenes. He act like he is acting badly. The cigarette scenes were most terrific. Then comes the author part, seriously! a author of some unknown book are in seclusion and drunkard, he was not John Gresham or Stephen kings or some Pulitzer Prize winner author who hasn't got any good book and now in hiding...Not only that the author has no respect for cancer patients or something like that he was rude, drinking all the time and insult our protagonist. Next comes our 18 years old so called virgin boy had sex where? Well, at Anne Frank memorial and that was highly encouraged by applauding strangers, I mean seriously!!!!How much pain one can bear does this director has any idea? So the worst is not yet over by this time we were so bored but to keep our self busy and in fact start enjoying the comedy, so we start playing games who will die first Elgort or Shailene...so by this time I know so much about script I told them what would going to happen and who will die first and how it ends...surprisingly that's what happen, because the script and screen play was so shallow any 6 years old could predict.
Please, emotions are set aside and reviews of teenagers are one thing, please IMDb remove the 8+ rating and give it a true 2 or at most 3 star ratings and please stop insulting movies with 8+ rating its offensive.
Night Train to Lisbon (2013)
Love, heartache, self discovery, revolution, Betrayal and Emotion
Well, I don't give reviews very easily and I can count for how many movies I have given my honest review. Everything has been said about this movie by other peoples and mostly almost all are positive. First thing first I have avoided to watch this movie for a long time after seeing the overall rating given by critics for this movie which is not totally justified specially after I watched the movie. So after reading quite a few readings of users reviews I put aside Critics reviews and start watching the movie by giving 15-20 Minutes and then I watched without single break till it ends. This movie was so awesome I cant believe the low under 7 rating it should be at least 7 or 8. This movie has everything and it execute so great hats off to director to pull out the novel with great cinematography and bring the novel to silver screen. This movie has it all, Love, betrayal, friendship, heartache, emotions, revolution, human touch, midlife crisis and combine with superb acting by everyone. But two people stands out clearly, Jeremy Irons and Jack Houston it doesn't mean others didn't they do part but Jeremy and Jack are really good, their expressions and overall acting showing the pain of love, emotions and the life they trapped in. Everyone at some stage of life really wanted to go out and free from themselves its shows greatly in this movie. Billie August did a great job. And this is one of the finest Jeremy Irons movie so far.
Divergent (2014)
Paid Publicity and Paid Critics
I usually don't write reviews and on occasion when the movie is really amazing or when movie is really worst, but that movie still end up with above 6 ratings by Critics. So Divergent is one of those movies where producers, directors and production houses instead of spending money and time on script, editing, acting and direction decided to spend all the energy on publicity and promotions. More than 90% of users reviews are negative and still the movie given as 7.7 stars I mean isn't is the biggest proof that producers well paid the critics too. Well, before the movie release they start promoting movie which is the typical case of every big budget movies but they started promoting actress and actor of the movie in every magazine and newspapers, basically they wanted to create a reel life imitating real life scenario between the leading pair the way it happened with Twilight series and because of that, the Twilight series otherwise one of the worse Vampire/Ware-wolf series made lot of money they bank on Kristen and Robert Pattison love chemistry, so the production houses tried to bank on Shailene & Theo chemistry in real life, but it seems that Shailene is not only pretty but she is smart as well, she has lot of potential and she didn't play that game. SO many comments already written about the flaws in the movie I don't think I need to reiterate them here. Overall very disappointing movie in all departments. The only thing is Shailene Woodley and I believe she is promising but still she is no Jennifer Lawrence and I don't think Divergent would become Hunger Games series. Another bad thing about this movie is unlike Twilight series which has low stars ratings which is justified this movie got 7.7 stars rating is ridiculous.
Vicky Donor (2012)
A rip off present as Original
Well may be not many Indian don't know that is the reason they are Compelled to give high rating for this movie. Though the movie itself is good if only it's not the rip off the movie "Starbuck". Well it happens in India that they don't have copy right constraint on anything. That is the reason Indian producers, directors, Music directors and everyone keep lifting the movies, music and pretty much everything and present like it's their original idea. Sad part is Hollywood or other countries don't even know that a violation of copyright happened in India every other day.
The new comer actor did a good job, still it's a rip off and they don't even mention or give credit to original movie they never does anyway.
