Choke (2008)
Superv.
Yes, there were some things in this movie that were unsavory. And Yes, this is not a first date movie or a movie for the faint of heart. But this was the first complete film I have seen in a very long time. Every element (comedy, love, sadness) was robust and fulfilling. The acting was phenomenal, the passion of the artists behind this film glowed. I went with my girlfriend who knows a thing or two about anonymous programs, she has said on many occasions that films depicting these organizations are devoid of any truth or dignity for that matter. Walking out she looked at me and simply said "Imperfectly perfect." The movie is as the book is. A paradox, in so many ways. If you want something not funny but hilarious, go buy a ticket. If your not looking for a love story but some realistic interpretation of loves manifestation in everyday messed up life, then by all means see this movie. If you want to see a hero in a villain or a the good in bad then you would be more than satisfied with this film. Choke is, in my eyes, complete.
Last Rites of the Dead (2006)
All in all very impressive.
First off let me say that this film should be examined within the confines of low budget horror films. Does it stack up against Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later? No. Those are examples of both realms of monetary breathing room, Dawn of the Dead- High, and 28 Days Later- medium. Zombie Anonymous or Last rites of the Dead had much less to work with. Having said that, this film was both innovative and thought provoking. Two things that money can't buy. the director Marc Fratto used some very interesting tools in his vision of life after death (meaning Zombification) Think Racism or something like it, also, think AA or something like it. Two concepts that have only been captured in a few other Zombie films. The acting is good for the most part, there are a few people who are in the peripheral cast that didn't quite cut it but this is to be expected for such an independent film. I only have two complaints, 1 the portrayal of ZA is nothing like AA or NA but more like group therapy, though, It fits when the movie shows the "darkside" of being a Zombie. 2 the action sequences seemed to draw on a little. The only reason I say that is because the story line and the concepts the director plays with were so interesting, I felt myself wanting more philosophy and well brain food (haha)
As previously stated this film was thought provoking, I would like to thank the director Marc Fratto for a new idea in a hurting genre, see diary of the dead, and also congratulate him and his cast on a job well done.
I found this movie at blockbuster of all places, Its a must see for anyone who enjoys the Zombie scene.
Diary of the Dead (2007)
Horrifying, not in a good way
Short Background, I LOVE ZOMBIE FILMS.
not this one.
I was eager to throw on this "Groundbreaking" film. I was told that Romero had come up with a new and interesting twist to the world of the living dead. HE DID NOT.
Most Zombie films don't tote the biggest name actors or the highest budget. What they do have is a loyal cult following. George Romero especially. I watched this film with two other people, my cousin who is into ridiculous gore and lots of decapitations, my father who enjoys inventive twists and good dialog, and myself, i lie in between these two. We were all disappointed. There were barely any zombies. The characters were idiotic and unlikable. The use of the internet was somewhat inventive but turned out dumb because Romero overkilled the animosity it generated within the core characters. The acting was atrocious, understandable right? Zombie flicks love to use unknowns. At least in movies like flight of the living dead there was some comedy, about the only good thing other than the deaths. The dialog was idiotic at parts and border line Ayn Rand at others, the use of profuse philosophy creates an awkwardness in films, even more so when its not consistent. Having said all that, there was one part I did enjoy.
Dog Soldiers (2002)
Great Flick
This is one of the best Werewolf films ever produced. Its got a certain intangible swagger that muddles with an "Aliens" feel. Not just a horror film, Dog Soldiers is unflinching and brutal. There's really nothing like it in modern horror. The Werewolfs are absolutely macabre and the heroes are a rough and tumble group of soldiers who are trained to handle just about anything. Somewhere between telling war stories over a fire and the discovery of a ravaged animal the soldiers realize that there routine training mission has taken a turn for the worse.
Not only will this film make you jump but it has great plot twists and even a not so subtle love story. Watch out for Spoony the little guy, He was my favorite throughout the whole film
Ice Spiders (2007)
Ice Spiders: a web of stupidity
Sometimes movies are made to cater to a certain audience. This movie aimed to please burnt out ski bums. The CG was atrocious, the acting was worse. That being said, there were parts of the movie that I had to rewind and watch again, not because it was good but because truly bad movies are funny in their own sad way. The best part of this film was the short but true commentary on pushy ski instructors, (Takes place in the first fifteen minutes or so) Don't watch this if you want gore.
Don't watch this if you want suspense. And definitely don't watch this if you like movies like arachnophobia, you will be completely disgusted, and not in a good way.
My girlfriend hates spiders, emphasis on hates. She bravely watched the opening five minutes of the film and found She wasn't once scared or creeped out. She finished the film and I quote, "What the hell was that?" A must see for any person who enjoys bad flicks.
Doomsday (2008)
So bad
Save yourself the 8 bucks and go to the hardware store, buy a hammer, and hit yourself. For how much S&M there was in this sad excuse for a movie you won't be missing anything. In fact you'll probably make out with more brain cells in the end. Doomsday was nothing but gore, punks, Knights and implausibility. For guys, this movie has dirty women and big explosions. Essential for any action movie, but be prepared to overlook a complete lack of intelligence in dialog and well every other aspect that a movie can fail in. Women please if you think MTV objectifies you save your sensibilities and watch an episode of FLava of love. Conversely, If its gore you want then its gore you'll get. Plenty of blood and macabre be-headings explosions and dismemberment. I however refuse to believe that when society as we know it comes to an end we will dress in 80s punk or chain mail. Apparently everyone with a brain killed themselves in the early stages of this dystopian decline. You may be thinking hey gore, punks. Why not? Don't make the mistake I did.
