Movie : 7,5 Benicio Del Toro : 10

Some ease and platitudes in the final outcome of the plot (fortunately made up for by a charming deus Ex Machina), but a detective film which focuses on the majesty of its editing and the mystery of the characters without giving too much into easy psychology is rare enough to note it.

The very short epilogue after the resolution is beautiful, leaving no doubt about the fact that the film focused on the interiority of its protagonist and the reconquest of his dignity much more than on the whodunnit which served as a pretext and backdrop.

Del Toro is at the height of his extreme mastery, with this elegance and false nonchalance which characterize him so well and make him a fascinating actor to contemplate in every shot.

So much doesn't fill

Finding Forrester + Unbreakable + Last Action Hero + Backdraft + Creed + Mad Max. Loose stacking does not fill Abyssal voids. Why not invest some of that money in screenwriters that are both classic and creative?

Honk-He-Donkey

Why didn't she just apologize? 🤔

Reminds me of René Girard's mimetic theory : « If people imitate each other's desires, they may wind up desiring the very same things; and if they desire the same things, they may easily become rivals, as they reach for the same objects. ».

She's got pist off losing her biggest client, and then projected her rage by honking aggressively and being impolite with a stranger. She pursues the same object as him : to be recognized by others, all responsible for her failures (her ex husband, her client, a stranger). At the end, her punchline just before killing him (« Here is your f... courtesy tap ») makes her an equal of him, not his opposite.

Subtle

The greatness of this film lies in its modesty. And its existential depth is at the very heart of its narrative sobriety. In a low profile performance of exceptional restraint, profoundness and precision - like an old samurai - Dennehy is at the top of his game. He shows us for one of the last time before his death the great actor he was, despite his "B movie / Movie of the Week" reputation.

Cheesy and uninteresting
22 August 2020
The main character is nice, but why avoid all his life dedication on mystery, aliens, space and sound techniques? All neglected for a cheesy love story with a boring and over treated bias.

Underrated

It may be the most exciting uninteresting film I've ever seen. The use of music and diptych dancing in blue and orange colors seem to be the main character. Something about Zem's relentless persistence also fascinates without anyone understanding why. I'm not a fan of Desplechin, but this film gives us mysteries without ever really unpacking them, with a confidence in the viewer that is becoming rare.

Brilliant, surprising and colorful
8 January 2020
A brilliant and breathtaking reconstitution of a multifaceted investigation, an allegorical epic on media and justice, secrets and lies, ambitions and misfortunes, community and individualism, violence and envy. All through highly fanciful, quixotic and controversial real-life characters. This documentary series is one of the best Netflix has ever produced.

Clever and profound

Very subtle global vision of the notions of guilt, violence, self-hatred and fear of others, through various portraits which do justice to the depth of human existential malaise in its least comfortable dimensions.

One huge teaser for Season 2
4 January 2020
I might specify a huge slow burn teaser... It's nice to see a mainstream production having the courage to embrace spirituality issues in such a large spectrum, every character having his ups and downs in the way they believe or not. I hope that all the questions marks will be addressed and that they will conclude in a second or third season and not expand it too much. I also hope the faith dimension will take over the more conventional political thriller issues (the less convincing aspect for me in season 1).
