Inside Man (2022)
The real mystery
For me, the real mystery of this dreadful series us why in the world Tucci and Tennant agreed to make it.
Both story lines are absurd and impossible: the American ward being so friendly to Tucci and wanting to save him, why? The cannibal with photographic memory turned the comin side kick of the story, why?
The Tennant story...I have no words to describe the utter ridicule of this part of the series, all of it unbelievable from start to finish. The hysterical wife, the obstinacy of the math teacher, in her absolutely unexpected negative reception of what the vicar was telling her, the son that is so completely different from the parents, with that round face, chubby body and curly hair, he seemed James Corden's child but not Tennant's child at all. The so called journalist that never got anything right and knew nothing about anything, and the sacristan and his mother, well, really?
What a mess! Don't bother.
Leonardo (2021)
Pure fiction with an historic name
I will never understand why do they take a huge historic figure to make a totally ficticious story.
Leonardo near 40 as a student in Verrochio's shop?
Not an homo?
Please, Invent a story and asume it's invented, give your characters invented names, do not feed people's ignorance with this kind of falsehoods to be taken seriously by most of the public.
The One (2021)
I didn't know Tenerife was a Portuguese island.
There are many absurdities in this plot, one of them was that Tenerife natives were Portuguese. One very tall blond, and handsome and his brother a very dark, small and ugly man. That's just one thing.
The other most absurd was to think of a match between humans that mirrored ant's way of mating.
Other strange thing is that a psycopath that kills or lets die so easily has a deep feelings of love.
Plus, everybody in the Spanish family of the Basque country speak perfect English. That's not happening in reality either.
So many things are wrong in this series... I'm sorry, but it is unwatchable.
Troop Zero (2019)
Sorry, but...
The movie was quite nice, but those last scenes ruined it, for me.
Criminal: Spain: Isabel (2019)
Unbelievable
There is a problem with the casting. Who is going to believe that Carmen Machi is a great lady of incredible means? She is the prototipical maid in Spain, starring in an awful comedy Aída for many years.
Besides, the story doesn't make sense and the setting, so modern, when in Spain the "comisarías" are so ugly, and old, and almost dirty... It just doesn't aid up.
Do not waste your time in this one.
Felicitas (2009)
A woman's tragedy
It is at least a sarcasm to be called Felicitas (a name that is related to happiness) and be very unhappy. This film tells us the unhappy life of an Argentinian woman, born in a wealthy family in Buenos Aires in the XIXth Century, Felicitas Guerrero (1846-1972). When she was 15 or 16, she fell in love with Enrique Ocampo (loosely related to Victoria and Silvina Ocampo), and married against her will at 16 to a much older (more than a 40 year gap between them) to a rich 'hacendado'(who, by the way, already had a secret family of four children living in Río Grande province, all of them older than the chosen girlish wife). As a result of this marriage, Felicitas never knew happiness.
Nowadays we cannot understand those stories of old men marrying girls, in an arrangement built by the parents and the old men, but historically, this only happened yesterday. In spite of her resistance and sorrow, she obeyed and married Martín Álzuaga, one of the richest men in Argentina, owner of many lands, with whom she had two sons that died in infancy.
Ten years after the marriage, Martín died, leaving her a huge fortune and all his properties. She became administrator and showed skills and determination, but again, her father considered she needed a man to take care of the fortune and was again receiving pressures to get married for a second time. Enrique Ocampo came back, sure that he was the right man, the beloved one, but she didn't choose him. Instead, she fell in love with a a neighbor, also very rich, Samuel Sáenz Valiente.
Enrique would not accept the rejection and took her life, shooting her in the back. It's terrible to notice how the men of her life could not accept her to take her own decisions or fail her own failings or have her own triumphs: to lead her life freely. Her father, Enrique, Martín...who knows if Samuel would have also behaved disrespectfully because she was a woman. An object to own, not a person.
With some license from the real story, Teresa Constantini has made a powerful film, not inspired but real, painful to see. The cast, perfect, and also the magnificent places.
A good film.
Abismos de pasión (1954)
The best version
Believe or not, this is the best adaptation of the marvelous and romantic story written by Emily Brontë in the Yorkshire Moors! Of course there are more faithful to the letter of the novel in those series made by the BBC long ago, but not the recent ones. The line story is so complicated that is very difficult for a movie to cover it fully. It's hardly believable that this Mexican movie does it so well as to be the best film on the subject, but that is the miracle of Art,
It doesn't belong to a place, but to all places, nor to a particular language, but to all languages. Buñuel's genius operates the miracle, aided by his excellent cast and team. This is the one version that captures the roots of Cathy's and Heathcliff's deep and contradictory emotions, the passions, the love and hate they shared and suffered, being all of them doomed to be unhappy in this world and hoping to be redeemed and united in the other. Placed in Mexico, black and white excellent photography, with a believable and intense cast, and a passionate, yet sometimes ironic direction, you must not judge before watching it. It is a great movie!
Sissi, l'impératrice rebelle (2004)
She was 'paid'
In reality that happened: the royal mother in law and father in law lunched with the couple the day after the wedding and gave her the money in public. This troubled young Elisabeth so much that she never forgot the issue. We must remember she was only 16. She was so embarrassed that she kept a fear for sex all her life. Perhaps this began to appear as a trauma. Also the constant meddling of her aunt and mother in law. As you say, she kept all her children away from her, critiqued her teeth and manners (which she considered inappropriate for an empress), and when Sissi finally went to Venice with her husband and children, her eldest daughter died, and the mother in law blamed her for that unfortunate and premature death. She never recovered.
Versailles (2008)
DVD without subtitles
Although the film (or what I could made up of it) es nice, touching and well acted, French DVD lacks subtitles and it's a pity. I don't understand why they do this, preventing all of us to buy their products. So, if you want to understand the whole of it, you'll have to wait until the film is available in your not French speaking country. Hmmm! That's too bad!
On the other hand, the story is compelling, realistic and has an extra interest: the cast is magnificent. They all are great actors, including the boy. We can also see one of the last performances Guilaume Depardieu made before his premature death (aged 37). Photograph, sometimes too dark, but effective, music nice, etc. Just the problem with the subtitles made me give the film so low a vote.
