The Bobroom (2000)
Excellent Writing!
This was one of those Canadian sketch shows that just had good, funny writing and strong performances. There were no bad impressions of the Prime Minister, no topical humor, no political humor and no recycled jokes. It is original comedy that had me in stitches every time it was on. Aside from the brutal lighting and awful studio audience this was a terrific sketch show. Just funny sketches, completely different than any other sketch shows on in Canada. If you like KITH you will love this! Jason Jones and Mike Beaver, two of the writers also wrote a hilarious Canadian feature film called Ham and Cheese. It's better than the show. Dave Foley and Scott Thompson from KITH are in it too and they are all excellent. I think if this show was given the chance it could have been great. I guess we'll all be stuck with Royal Canadian Air Farts for another twenty years. Oh good god, help us!
Starsky & Hutch (2004)
Waste of Talent
****POSSIBLE SPOILERS**** Not that it matters. I saw this movie at the sneak preview on Saturday the 21st of Feb. It had the makings of a great movie; Ben Stiller (who always delivers), Owen Wilson (he does that 'Owen Wilson thing' better than anyone), Vinny V (who is a very funny actor) and the new comedy god, Will...This was the cast. A brilliant cast of comic actors. Regardless of the plot, this should have been a laugh a minute comedy classic. Well, guess what?...It wasn't. It was boring. The chuckles (that's really all they were) were few and far between. Was it the story? Most likely. I mean, it was an episode of Starsky and Hutch with a bunch of lukewarm, repackaged, 'seen it all before', jokes. Nothing will surprise you. If you are surprised than this is probably one of the first comedies you have ever seen! Gags that you can predict five scenes ahead (i.e. Starsky's coke coffee bit) Oh, and on that scene, in which Ben drinks coffee with cocaine in it and goes to a Dance Fever type disco for a disco-off, if you laugh at disco dancing-That's it- 70's dance moves, if that 'cracks' you up, then you will be on the floor for that scene. Because there is nothing funny about it. "Ha, ha, he's thrusting his pelvis!" Set pieces after set pieces were complete let downs. Great set-up, bad execution. Don't get me wrong there were 'some' funny moments. But the movie was such a waste that I can't remember them. Will Ferrell was a wasted talent. He phoned this performance in (an unintentional pun-every scene he's in, he's on the phone). Will's only funny moment was a couple of reaction shots while Hutch did the dragon thing. Wasted talent. The people in my theater barely laughed during this flick. You'd see the jokes coming...they would happen...no one would laugh. This is the state of comedy. Nothing new. I'm tired of writing about this movie. Sum it all up here....... The Torino was the real star in the movie (the car looks great). Couple of laughs. Not enough for the cast that they had. Bad story (this is a big reason it was bad) Snoop dog is boring. We've seen the extent of Ben Stiller's talent. Owen Wilson doesn't change characters from movie to movie. Will Ferrell arrived on set and made up his character there. I bet you he had no idea what he was going to do the night before. Not a great piece of comedy history..
Roger Dodger (2002)
Campbell Scott is great
Excellent acting. Enjoyable movie. It lags at times and the humour is sparse but it is very well acted. The kid is good too. I didn't even mind Elizabeth 'what's-her- face'. It doesn't finish too strong though and Campbell Scott's character is not too likable and doesn't really chang in the movie. I laughed at many lines in the flick but it was a Saturdat afternoon and I might have laughed at anything. I don't know what I think now...I might tell someone else to check it out but they probably won't listen to me.
