Bloodline Killer (2024)
Slash the night away
A slasher with a mask forged from hellfire is front and center on the poster and is cloaked in the shadows, jut waiting to strike in a small quaint suburban town. With every kill the slasher makes its mark leaving a paranoid and consumed matriarch in Moira Cole (Shawnee Smith) all the more unravelled. She carries the burden and haunting secrets of the past that follow and linger like a chill in the fall air that surrounds this horror thriller. The build is slow and eerie and the inevitable outcome is a welcome entry into this genre. Will they survive and what will be left if they do hangs in the balance as the journey of Moira and her family fight for their lives.
Imaginary (2024)
Scare Bear
A big budget unimaginative horror. I think the problem with this film is the bigger budget and not having to stick to any storyline. I didn't understand much and it felt like scare pieces were put into place just to have an impact rather than being part of the story. There are films that have done this better like Annabelle. When it comes to being scared of childhood toys, teddy bears are a hard toy to turn into a frightening creature. I kept thinking of Ted, it's easier to turn them into a comic relief than a thing to be feared. I get what they were going for but it felt like there were a lot of versions of what they were going for all wrapped into one film.
X (2022)
Can't take your eyes off it
A slow strange horror film that dares you to stop watching until the very end. Mia Goth does it again, leading the cast in this indie horror film with a sense of doom and dread. The film takes on a life of its own with a story I didn't see coming with unlikely heroes and villains that make for a riveting, nerve racking experience. The style and pacing have an eerie way of getting under your skin and leaving you thinking about everything that happened. There are great kill scenes and build ups that take a moment to get to but well worth the wait as the characters are all really interesting and well developed.
Lisa Frankenstein (2024)
Bride of Frankenstein
Had so much fun watching this one. A campy horror that reminded me of some classic films such as The Heathers, Edward Scissor Hands and Fright Night. Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse have an instant chemistry and do an amazing job of being the outcast misfits in a very pretty in pink, neon world of cool suburbia that surrounds them. Other cast like Liza Soberano and Carla Gugino give really strong character roles that help build the tension and competitive nature of world Lisa finds herself stuck with. She is the ultimate escapist and finds solace doing things out of the norm, giving the film an overall weird vibe that fits perfectly into the Frankenstein lore.
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
Abracadabra
A mastery of filmmaking in this gem of a horror that looks deep into the supernatural through the lens of a late night talk show set in the 70's, 80's - studio audience included. Loved the concept and execution of the unfolding story as the show goes on all in the name of ratings, it's a real thrill ride and well acted. The lead does such a good job he should probably get his own talk show. The rest of the cast met the same standard and did an amazing job of keeping me at the edge of my seat all the way to the end. Having the story take place during Halloween takes on a whole other layer of intrigue.
