Jan Dara (2001)
An unusual Story
This is an unusual story in general standards on the sexual experiences of a boy 'Jan Dara' with troubled childhood. His mother dies after delivering him and father hates him for reasons unknown to him. He gets his first experience from Aunt who has come to take care of him. Then he gets attracted to his father's young mistress. The teen love between Jan and school girl Hyacinth is pictured very beautifully. There's is not much dialog, but love is present everywhere whenever the two meets, though it ends in a tragedy. The girl dies due to typhoid. Jan gets more trouble from his sister (daughter of aunt and father), who is really a hard nut to break. He goes to his village to know more about his father and mother and it makes him more distracted from leading a normal life. When he comes back his sister is pregnant from somebody and he 'helps' his father by marrying her. The child born is a retard. His wish to have his own child is shattered by his wife. The relationships are hard to understand and sometimes makes us wonder what is real?? It is not just a story of an individual, as it gives a glimpse on Vietnam war which was the worst thing ever happened to that country. Probably the director was trying to question about the value of life as more serious problems are present every where.. The background score and editing is superb
The Life of David Gale (2003)
An Interesting Movie
This is a different kind of a movie. There is no story as such...The whole film is based on a movement - an activist group against capital punishment. Though I don't agree with the idea, the film shows how innocent people also could be killed due to loop holes in the law.
The story starts with the accused professor Gale (Kevin Spacey) going to be interviewed by journalist Bitsey (Kate Winslet) in his last three days of life. He has specifically chosen her with a purpose. First it looked like a conspiracy by somebody to put Dale in jail. Who are his enemies?? But as movie progresses through a video send by somebody Bitsey knows more about it and the reason behind all these setup unfolds. One she knows he is innocent, she desperately tries to save Dale, but in vein. In the last she receives the full video, which reveals that Dale himself was part of the script.
The script is very good and acting superb. Some of the duologue's are very effective like what is life?? We all do things not to die and finally what happens ???
Samsara (2001)
Everything is Maya
A movie on the life of a Buddhist monk. Though he was sent to monastery when he was small, after going through three years of meditation and getting the Khenpo degree from Lama he starts thinking of life. Without 'living the life' how can he know the difference. Even 'Budha' had a family life before coming out of palace in the night in search of peace. Thus he comes out for 'LIVING', marries a girl of his choice and leads a life like any common man. He also falls for money, pleasure and finally starts feeling the meaninglessness of life when he gets a message from his teacher. He leaves his family and goes back to his old school. His wife meets him on the way and asks what about her life?? He attained 'realization' at the expense of her life. How can she leave her son and do the same thing what he has done?? What Budha has done for the people to realize the 'spontaneity of life' he could not understand. To understand that he has gone through all sorts of emotions...Then he realizes that his wife is having a better understanding on Samsara than him and living a normal life also one can attain spirituality.
The location of the film, Ladakh is very beautiful. Maybe the government can use the film for Tourism promotion. The photography and music excellent. The starting scene has given a lot more promise than what followed. Even then the movie is good to watch as it shows 'LIFE'.
Rowdy Rathore (2012)
A Mass Entertainer
Another commercial from director 'Prabhudeva'. The movie is hopeless right from the beginning. It becomes a little interesting in the flash back where Assistant Commissioner Of Police Vikram Rathore shines. (Only for the claps of Akshay fans.........). The story is about a sincere cop played by Akshay who fight against a local landlord 'goonda' in Devgarh of Patna (Bihar state) district. He fights hard but fails to stand against the power of the villain and politicians though he could kill villains son in the form of an accident. Then comes the double acting of Akshay, the hero. The other akshay is a thief who gets a box which contains ACPs daughter. Looking similar, the girl assumes him as her father. When the thief comes to know about the full story he comes back to Devgarh in ACPs uniform and eliminates all the villains. Sonakshi plays as thief Akshay's lover and is wasted. Prabhudeva knows the pulse of audience. All action scenes are identical to the ones in Telugu/Tamil films. The director knows north Indians wouldn't have seen them. So it can be sold. His first Hindi film 'Wanted' with salman was much better than this. Don't watch 'Rowdy Rathore' unless you are a hard fan of Akshay (or Sonakshi) or you have never seen a south Indian action movie... Don't apply any logic anywhere. The film is a pure entertainer for the masses and if you are a serious film buff, leave your brain back home to watch this. There isn't any logic in plot and there are N number of mistakes in every scene. So stop pointing out that as I think director also knows about that.
