Hot Stuff (1979)
FINALLY out on DVD!!!
This is a funny movie. It was way too long in coming to DVD. I bought it for my sons and brother for Christmas. We worn out the VHS copy.
The ensemble cast is excellent. Each character has its unique personality. Very well acted, and it looks like they had a lot of fun making this. Sadly most every one of the main characters are gone now.
It does have the repertoire company of Burt Reynolds, but I think it is a better film with this cast then if Burt had taken the lead.
I wish Dom DeLuise had made more films. He became more interested in cooking later in life. He was a very funny man. I used to love him on Johnny Carson.
Please take the time to seek out this movie. You'll enjoy it!
Riverboat (1959)
The trivia quote is wrong.
There were Afro-Americans in the series. I just watched Path of the Eagle and there are several and the Captain is very polite with them.
I always liked Darren McGavin. He was a very good actor. I remember that Burt Reynolds had problems with him. But, I wonder if Burt's ego didn't get the better of him. Darren had all ready been the star of another great series Mike Hammer, Burt was just starting out. He probably should have listened more and mouthed off less. I think Burt clashed because they have they same kind of swagger.
So, where are the other episodes??? Same with Mike Hammer, where are they???
XIII: The Conspiracy (2008)
Why change the story
In trying to update the story from the great comic book series, they ruined the plot. XIII was and is a great comic book series. I just reread it again. But the TV series tried to make it into a different story, yet using the character names from the comic book and adding a few. The suspense is missing. The humor is missing. Jones's character is diminished. In the comic book she also quite a fighter and love interest. The photo shop business was all added and not needed. XIII figures it out.
It should have been a weekly series sticking to the original characters and plot.
Maverick: Shady Deal at Sunny Acres (1958)
Joan Young - Susan Granville
Unfortunately the information on Joan Young who plays Susan Granville is totally wrong. The bio has her being born in 1903. This episode from 1959 has her at about twenty!! Obviously a different person.
I have written IMDb but have been ignored.
This episode, and Waco Williams are my all time favorite Mavericks. "You sure he can count all the way to ten, Colonel?"
Wonderful ENCORE TV is now showing all the Mavericks in order, every day at 6PM. DON"T MISS A ONE!
Now all we have to do is wait for them to come out on DVD.
Plys all the other Warner Bros TV shows from the fifties.
The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men (1952)
DVD is hard to find....
This is an excellent film. One I remember fondly from my youth and have purchased on VHS and laser. I now have it on DVD, but this is where Disney has done us wrong. You can only buy this DVD through their Movie Club. This is outrages. Several of the other Disney live-action features are sold this way. Kidnapped, Zorro. This is keeping these films from the general public. Disney should know better.
This is probably the only Robin Hood film that sticks close to the original legend. It is well acted and Joan Rice is beautiful as Maid Marian. Having been to Sherwood Forest, Nottingham, and the surrounding area, it is nice to see that this film was actually filmed in England, not in California like Flynn's movie. And, of course, the war hero Richard Todd (he was one of the first on Omaha beach) is excellent as Robin Hood.
Down Periscope (1996)
DVD complaint
This is a very funny movie. But why do we not have the widescreen version of this, instead of Pan & Scan? Yes, I know it says here 1.85:1 just like the DVD. But it is not true. The movie is 2.35:1, just look at the trailer. What they have done is Pan & Scanned the movie for standard TV 1.33:1, then to make it fake widescreen, they took the 1.331 P&S picture, chopped off the top and bottom and made it 1.85:1. So, you see actually even less than the standard TV size.
They did the same thing with Top Gun. This is inexcusable.
I wold love to see this movie correctly. The movie is clever, well-written and fun. The lines sick with you.
I do not understand why it did not do well in the theaters. Whenever I mention this movie among friends they all know it and either own it or have seen it.
