Michael Clayton (2007)
I don't know what all the fuss is about
I got this movie out on DVD last week and didn't realise that I had already seen it until it came to the bit where GC gets out of his car, walks up the hill to see the horses and his car blows up. I don't know why he got out of his car nor why it blew up but as I couldn't remember what happened in the movie I watched some more of it. I never got to see all of the movie as I switched it off, thoroughly bored with it. I cannot understand why so many people consider him 'the sexiest man alive' and other tags like this. I used to watch ER but cannot recall him, so even back then he didn't make my heart race. To me he is an aging fast, middle aged man, too full of himself. He must however be commended for his charitable work but as for films if he's in it I don't bother with it.
West Side Story (1961)
It bored me stiff
As a fan of musicals through the 50's I eagerly awaited the release to our local cinema of West Side Story. I had an argument with my husband about going and left him holding the baby (literally) I was expecting great things from this movie after all that had been written about it but I was disappointed. There were a couple of nice songs but nothing to make me go out and buy the record. The acting I thought seemed forced. I put this in the same category as Dances with Wolves which I also found boring. It seemed like a series of postcard views. I refused to go and see Sound of Music as even the clips did nothing for me. I did see other Julie Andrews films which I enjoyed. I would give WSS a 1 out of 10 but I realize that it must have something that I missed so I gave it a 4.
The Bespoke Overcoat (1955)
A good story, 2 great actors and a really moving film
I saw this film tonight December 2008 on TV and it was a grainy black and white. That is the worst thing I can say about it. I have in the past seen David Kossoff and Alfie Bass in many films but none ever had the impact that this film had on me. David Kossoff has always been regarded as a very good actor and so he was in this film. But I know Alfie Bass more for the comedy roles that he has played. His performance in this film was outstanding. I see that he was nominated for a Best Actor Award and I think his performance was Oscar standard. This film has made more of an impression on me than any of the more recent films made with big stars and big budgets. I would recommend this film to anybody who enjoys a good story, great acting and older films. I give it 9 out of 10 only because I don't believe that it is possible for human beings to be perfect.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
There are not many movies I would give 10/10
I first saw this film some years ago and it left a deep impression on my mind. Recently I made a list of films that I had seen before that I would like to see again. Top of my list was The Shawshank Redemption. All I could remember of the film was that it was about 2 men in Prison BUT that it had made a deep impression on me and I wanted to see it again. I got to see it again and I was not disappointed. It was on local TV and even all the ads couldn't spoil it. I was entranced by the two chief characters who were superb and also by the secondary characters. As the final credits rolled I felt as though I could watch it again and pick up on things that I had missed. I've never felt like that before about any film. I haven't checked as to whether this movie received any Oscars but it certainly should have for the characters, for the story, for best film and so on. I highly recommend this movie. Definitely 10/10. I'm off to find it on DVD.
