Total Recall (1990)
totally stupid
When I first saw this film on video back in 1990/1991 I was young and I thought it was one hell of a film. Now I want to comment on how stupid this whole film is. I don't mind watching impossible action scenes but I mean come on: A "trace device" stuck in Arnold's noise the size of a tennis ball? And if Mars is such a bad place with plenty of terrorists, why is the glass non-bullet proof? (especially when Arnie & the brunette are being chased my Madsen). The story/idea is good but watching this film for the end time, I realized how stupid it all is. I sold the dvd copy, it's not worth having in your collection.
No Retreat No Surrender (1985)
Bruce Lee would be ashamed
I saw this film when I was a die hard Van Damme fan and even then, it sucked. Kurt McKinney plays this young kid who moves to Seattle and when his dad gets into trouble by some bad guys he gets help from Bruce Lee's spirit (or ghost). This has got to be the stupidest idea ever and if Bruce Lee didn't die back in '73, he would have died in 1985 when watching this film. This film is a disgrace to the master.
3615 code Père Noël (1989)
Home Alone meets Die Hard in a mansion during Christmas.
It's been awhile I have seen this film but from what I can remember when I saw it as a kid: I liked it. A small boy is left (with or without babysitter? I don't remember) alone at home (huge mansion) while his parents attend a dinner party on christmas eve. The boy named Thomas thinks he is safe until a burglar dressed in Santa Claus decides to drop in and do some christmas shopping. So now begins this cat & mouse game as Thomas is determined to defend himself and his home. Think more in the lines of "Rambo kid Home Alone without that Culkin brat". Good film from what I can remember and I'm still trying to find a copy of this french film. Perhaps I liked it because I was about the same age as the hero of the film who had these self-made weapons, cool gadgets and was fighting against this psycho santa claus dressed burglar.
For those who wonder what 36.15 is: it's not the code for "Pere Noel" (Santa Claus) but in France it's like a "teletext" or "internet/bbs" function back in the 80's/early 90's. Basically you type in 36.15 and then a "name/word" (e.g. 36.15 CINEMA) and you can find info. Sort of like an electronic yellow pages server.
Miracle Mile (1988)
great unknown film
I'm one of those who actually liked this film and after reading the reviews here I'm glad most rated this film above average. Some say the characters are stupid and they will frustrate you but I don't remember this, all I remember is that it was a pretty suspenseful "what if the russians nuke the us" film. Compare it to "Deep Impact" without the effects but better. I hope it gets released on DVD soon. I love the ending.
Ôdishon (1999)
it could happen to you
I don't understand why people think it's a horror film. Because it's not. Something like this could happen and does happen in real life. I recently read a true story about a guy who strangled his girlfriend and left the body in his car trunk for months. Why should this movie be so shocking if it happens in the real world. People (including kids) get chopped in pieces for real, all the time. The gore scenes look just so real.
And it's not too long either. I saw this film already knowing the end would be shocking so that sort of spoiled the whole experience but still "Audition" is a really good film, not for all tastes. The gore scenes are overhyped but still shocking. I definately recommend this film for those who want to be shocked or be surprised. I loved the way the viewer is betrayed (I really was hoping the poor guy was dreaming it all). After seeing the film, I somehow feel sorry for Asami and at one point you start to understand why psychopaths exist in this world. But she looks creepy the first time you see her, like anorexic...that's probably a bad sign already. I hope to see "ichi the killer" real soon.
Survivor (1987)
a hidden trashure
The memory I have of this film goes a long way back ever since I saw the theatrical trailer (it actually got released in the Philipines back in '87). Recently I picked up the DVD (region 0) and I just like this film for unknown reasons really. Chip Meyer plays an astronaut who comes back to earth only to discover he just missed out on world war III. It starts in flashback style and alot will find this film a total bore (specially the second half) but if you like end of the war films, you should see this film. It's the narration perhaps (the actors don't really talk, just narrate their thoughts to us), is it the cheesy score? Is it the cool cover art that appealed to me? Maybe it's because I love films about the end of the world. Check out Damnation Alley, City Limits for more post-apocalyptic low-budget mayem.
