the bad boy meets the songbird
6 September 2002
A funny movie. Robin Padilla (Gimo) hilariously essayed the role of a number one fan of a singing superstar (Francine, played by Regine). The wacky cast composed of Rufa Mae and John L. added more spice. A movie for those who like to see Robin in his not so usual bad boy role.

Shadow Fury (2001)
Cloned Ninja in the future
30 August 2002
In the beginning of the story, it reminds me about the movie Karate Kid, because of Pat Morita. He died so soon in the movie. There are lots of scene that are not so convincing. In times that Madsen, the bounty hunter, was already down and helpless, Takero, who has the opportunity to kill the man who killed his creator, just walked away. Anyway, Takero's reluctant to kill Madsen is one of the factor that lead them to battle Kismet. 7/10

GREAT WORK
13 August 2002
A 10/10! A must see movie. Great script, great direction. Cesar Montano's performance is very moving. His acting is much better than his movie, Jose Rizal.

This movie, dealing about the Muslim rebellion in Mindanao and its effect to the civilians, is worth for your collection!

bad, so bad

A very cheap, boring "version" of the dynamic duo. Anybody at DC Comics should file a case against those who are responsible for this crap. This is a complete diss Bob Kane and the million and million of Batman fanatics!

TOTALLY STUPID
12 July 2002
This stupid movie is for the morons. As S2pid as the title implies, this movie is said to be based on a song popularized by a rap group whose members are also stupid! "Stupid! Stupid!" as what the song's chorus goes (so sad, it vandalized the lines from Barbara Streisand's Ever Green). I can't write a line without the word stupid in it. So better not watch this movie, or I'm gonna call you stupid!

A CHEAP IMITATION OF PEARL HARBOR
12 July 2002
This film appears to be a cheap imitation of Hollywood's Pearl Harbor (2001). Both of these films deal about the second World War. Pearl Harbor is of course about the Japanese attack on Hawaii, while this movie deals about the Japanese attack on the Philippines, then a largely American-dominated country.

This film, while winning a number of awards, including the Best Film, in the recent Metro Manila Film Festival, failed to entertain me.

There are lot of questionable scenes. Lot of lines that could be debated. But one thing in this movie makes me laugh -- the casting of an old Filipino actor to play the wealthy Japanese mob leader who is after the Yamashita treasure. While the production spent so much in having some of this film shot in USA (of course with American actors playing bit roles), the movie producer - or the casting director? - failed to cast a real Japanese actor to play the wicked Jap gang leader.

Akala mo... (2002)
A music video extended to an hour!
11 July 2002
A movie inspired by a popular song, "Akala Mo" unites two main stars from two rival networks in the Philippines. It's a surprise pairing of ABS-CBN young superstar Judy Ann Santos and GMA-7 heartthrob Dingdong Dantes in a movie made by Viva Films, the movie company identified with another rival TV station, IBC 13 or the so-called Viva TV. The light romance-comedy is definitely experimental that even the person in the director's chair is a newbie.

This product of first-time big-screen director Lyle Sacris, a 26-year old award-winning music video director responsible for the headbashing videos of local rap-metal groups Slapshock and Chicosci, is just like a music video stretched to an hour and 46 minutes.

Santos plays Rezzete, a security guard assigned in a condominium who falls in love with one of building occupants, Eric (Dantes), a car salesman. Rezzete does everything just be noticed by Eric who is not even serious in entering into a relationship. The movie reflects that modern women are no longer afraid to court the man of their dreams.

Rezzete's best friend, the building janitress, Beauty (Candy Pangilinan), courts the condo all-around-man Jun (Dennis Padilla), while her cousin (Anne Curtis) voluntarily sets herself for a "blind date" with Joey (I forget the actor's name). Woman power? Maybe.

In the end, Aiza Seguerra, of course, appears and sings the title track, which is taken from her second album, "Pinakamamahal".

The movie gave me a SEVERE headache. The rotating shots sucked all the way. There was nothing unusual - even with that "girl power" angle. The direction was lousy.

Getting an MTV award for best video doesn't mean that one is qualified to direct a full-lengh movie. A forgettable film. A boring cross-over.

FUNNY STALKER
4 July 2002
Another stalker movie, but with a twist of humor. This team-up of Rufa Mae Quinto and Jeffrey Quizon is a winner. Jeffrey Quizon is a great actor -- he can be a funny man or a serious actor. Of course, he has his father's blood (he's a son of comedy king Dolphy). Jeffrey is no doubt Philippine's answer to Hollywood's Jim Carrey. His portrayal of the crazy, but funny, stalker is cool. How about a beer for that? Rufa Mae Quinto's acting is just like in her previous movies -- down to earth funny. See this movie for a serious laugh!

THE SUPERSTAR AT HER BEST
21 June 2002
I gave this movie a perfect 10. I am not Nora Aunor fanatic - I am too young to be his diehard groupie. But this film is a must. Another movie that reflects the abusive militaristic government in the Philippine, then headed by a former military general who helped in ousting a dictator. La Aunor gave a fantastic performance as the villager who survived a massacre and went after the head of the platoon leader, who powerfully played by veteran Eddie Garcia.

THE WEAKEST
19 June 2002
Maybe lot of Filipino viewers hate Edu Manzano with his sadistic hosting of the Philippine's version of The Weakest Link that's why this movie flop! It's Edu Manzano's first movie since hosting the localized version of the Weakest Link where he insulted more than a hundred of participants. The trailer of this movie, with an authorized usage of Drowning Pool's Bodies as background, was heavily rotated during The Weakest Link hour at IBC-13.

This movie could be the WEAKEST among the entries in the 2001 Metro Manila Film Festival, despite it's a Viva Films production. With Dina Bonnevie, Rica Peralejo and lot of sexy stars in the cast, the movie could have been the top crowd-drawer among the male adult viewers. But sad to say, the movie was a loser when it was shown. I could not remember that this movie got any award in the 2001 MMFF. Edu was humbled by Cesar Montano, Dina was a peanut to a newcomer named Assunta de Rossi, a bold actress. This could be a classic since it was based on a Nick Joaquin's novel and directed by Tikoy Aguiluz. But there's nothing here that can qualify this movie as a soon-to-be classic. Ms. Peralejo's breast exposure was nothing. Ms. Bonnevie was too old to do a sexy role. Ms. Taylor's timid acting was a waste. Ms. Jaca's role is forgettable. In short, this movie is a trash.

HILARIOUS
7 June 2002
Booba Rufa Mae Quinto, even without capitalizing her big breast, shines in this comedy. Bong Revilla's shift from hard action to comedy works out. That funny gay John Lapuz also delivers a slam. I can't believe that the an 80's sexpot, Janice Jurado, the original Booba, is paired with that old man, Berting Labra playing Quinto's parents. Anyway, that sexy newcomer playing Revilla's flavor of the month pet is a bomb! Watch this movie if you want a solid laugh.

A typical 80's teen-ager Pinoy Movie done years before the Ninja fever hit the US shore
7 June 2002
A cheesy movie featuring the 80's bagets (young actors). Movies featuring teeny-boopers were big hit in early 80's with the smashing Bagets series (almost all in the leading cast in this flick were in Bagets series - except for Aga and William). At that time, karate/ninja movies also made a killing in the big screen. Hence, this movie was made. I remember that singing sensation Keno (remember his hit "Leaving Yesterday's Behind?), where the hell is he now? Ohhh, Lea Salonga is in the cast. Lea who? The Miss Saigon? The Tony Awardee? Yes....my dear! Anyway, I will still love to watch this flick if given the opportunity. Well, it reminds me of my teen-age years!

An anthology ala Red Shoes
5 June 2002
Controversy hit this movie. No less than the chief of the national police protested the showing of this movie claiming one of the three episodes is a direct insult to the police organization. The protest, however, made this movie a blockbuster. Of course, viewers were attracted with this first-ever daring adult movie of then not-so-popular sweet teen star Assunta de Rossi who bared her upper extremities for a number of times while doing her hot sexual scenes with the men in the movie. This movie made her an instant star. The first episode deals about the story of a kerida (paramour) who engaged in an extra-curricular activity with her lover's driver (who is also the paramour of her lover's wife). The second story deals about an illicit relationship of a balik-bayan (one who returns to one's country after staying in a foreign land for years) with a seminarian. The third - and the most controversial - is about the martyr wife of an abusive police officer who let his colleagues used his wife. Indeed, this movie is one of the provocative films in the Philippines.

THIS MOVIE BORES ME
5 June 2002
Okay, I am not a Harry Potter fanatic. I hate reading any novel of

J.K. Rowling. I slept while watching this movie with a friend. A very long agony -- almost 2 hours -- inside the theater while waiting for my date watching this flick. I love the previous works of Chris Columbus -- Home Alone series and Mrs. Doubtfire are on my list -- but not this one. Maybe I find this movie to sissy.

THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL
5 June 2002
This was the first movie I and my family watched in our personal computer. We all love this movie. We viewed it twice on the same day. My two kids (then aging 4 and 2) were all glued to the computer screen -- my wife just forwarded the restricted parts -- those nude painting and love scene. I can definitely says it's entertaining, and one of the best movies -- the ticket sales proved it. Cameron rules.

ONE OF THE MOVIES STILL IN MY MIND
5 June 2002
This is definitely one of the few movies still in my mind. I watched this when I was still in second year high (around 1984 here). Nevermind if this movie is not a classic, but this is surely a hard action and one of the best movies released that year in our city. Action flicks were then making money here.

I WISH THIS MOVIE CAN BEAT TITANIC
2 June 2002
I am expecting this movie to beat Titanic in ticket sales. I am starting a campaign. I have watched the movie 5 times (in theaters, not in video, so that's 5 dollars -- our ticket here is around 50 pesos or equivalent to a dollar -- more for this movie), and I am planning to watch it more.

Wanna help me make this fantastic movie the top grosser of all time?
