Culpa mía (2023)
Interesting but also unbelievable...
While this movie was very interesting to watch mainly due to the chemistry of the two leads, it kind of felt like a big fuss over nothing. Like two seventeen year olds met after their parents married and suddenly any relationship beyond being a happy family is off limits. Made even weirder by the fact this movie takes place in a country where even sexual incest over the age of sixteen isn't illegal! The car stunts were pretty cool especially the climactic one near the end and the scenery in some parts was absolutely stunning. I'd be interested in watching the forthcoming sequels just to see what the big fuss is about. At this point i'm expecting it to be revealed in the next movie that they are actually related just to make the parents behaviour make more sense.
Source Code (2011)
Ok but nothing amazing!
I feel like this movie had a very good premise but didnt fully explore its potential. The characters are good and interesting enough and the mystery of whats actually happening pulls us about half way through the movie, though truth be told I don't think it was too hard to work out he was dead based on where he was after every mission. Still we cling on to find out how this technology is used and what it could do in the future. The problem is we never find out!!! This amazing premise seems to be narrowed down to this one incident and nothing more. And yes i know the whole point was well we can change our own reality and still make a different etc. I just dont feel like it was the actual big pay off, they set it out to be.
3 Body Problem (2024)
Started off promising but fizzled out!'
The start of this made me really excited for what might come...the mystery seem to build with the flashbacks and them suddenly we got mid-way and we got most of our answers. The thing that kept me going is wondering if we might see what 'they' or 'lord' looks like but nope it just keeps ticking away for the last few episodes. Even if there was a season 2 i'm not sure id be interested because this show really struggles to get the pacing right which means you're not sure if you're going to get a good pay off or not. Its a real shame as the premise and characters have definitely got the ingredients for an excellent show, they just dont make up for the inconsistency of the pace of the storytelling.
Lessons in Chemistry (2023)
A Rare Occurrence where a tv series outshines it's source material!
I read lessons in Chemistry early this year and found it quite unforgettable. It moved me in a way that books these days rarely do! When I heard of the TV series I was intrigued to see what they would do with the book and if they might change it any way. They did change some parts while keeping the spirit of the book very much alive. In fact I would say that the parts that were changed from the book very much enhanced the series and made it absolutely riveting to watch. The actors all do great jobs of embodying their characters which makes the story even more plausible. I very much identified with Elizabeth and Calvin's obsessive pursuit of things unknown and their inability to connect with things around them. Though I should mention I am ADHD and somewhere on the autistic spectrum. It was so great to see such wonderfully flawed character that I identified with. This wasn't just a series, it almost felt like a personal journey that pulls at your heart strings for the timeless message it delivers of hope, of womanhood, of life and of chemistry!
