Wolf Creek 2 (2013)
Not a patch on the first film
The first film was a classic horror, full of menace. John Jarratt is still excellent, but this film is a parody, I found my attention wandering during the later parts. Sometimes sequels are as good as or better, for example Alien and Aliens but not this one. In one scene the villain appears in a lorry, the guy being chased could have outmanoeuvred him easily. How did he shoot the cop when they had driven away at high speed? The quiz scene is overdone and boring. Don't expect it to be anything like as good as the first film. I hope there is not going to be a third one, unless they go back to the style and suspense of the first film.
The Sweetest Thing (2002)
Absolute Rubbish
I cannot believe that anyone on this site could have thought this film was any good, one said best film they had ever seen, unbelievable.
One of my film bibles used to be Leonard Maltins review book, but I am not sure if he actually writes the reviews now, he gave it two and a half stars, I expected it to be a BOMB (rubbish).
The film is trying to pretend that women can be as crude, and find the same things funny as men, most women I have known do not fit this category. A song and dance routine about a penis, a scene about a stain on a dress which was so obvious. Terrible.
To everyone on this site who thought this was funny I suggest renting any Coen brothers film, to see how comedies should be made.
Taste of Fear (1961)
Brilliant little horror film
Back in 1973 I had a Bell and Howell 16mm projector and used to hire films to show to family and others.
This film was one of them and I can remember it scaring people back then.
Yesterday I watched it again through a modern projector, as BBC 2 had shown it recently, and thought it was just as good now as back in 1973.
It benefits from being shot in black and white, the acting is very good from all the cast, and there are some scary moments, the swimming pool being an obvious one.
It is really good to see an old fashioned horror film with no over-the-top effects, just a genuinely chilling story, well worth waiting for it to be shown again as not sure if available on DVD or video.
Unthinkable (2010)
Overwrought rubbish
I had high hopes when this film started,
atomic bombs planted, perhaps a race against the clock to find them?
No, just an excuse for torture scenes and lots of overwrought acting, avoid at all costs.
A waste of time.
I cannot understand the rave reviews on this site.
I usually like films that feature Samuel Jackson but not this one.
Check out
Lakeview Terrace, Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction to see what a good film is all about.
Carve Her Name with Pride (1958)
A solid inspiring story of wartime bravery in World War II
It must be a sign of getting older but I find myself watching old films more and more now. Sky showed this film recently, and I much preferred it to some of the modern blockbusters they show. Virgina McKenna does an excellent job of portraying Violetta Szabo. Good old Jack Warner (Sergeant Dixon!) is excellent as the long suffering father. Paul Scofield is brilliant playing the part of Tony. It was directed by Lewis Gilbert, who also directed "Alfie" and "Educating Rita". It brings home the suffering normal people went through, as well as heroines like Violetta. I defy anyone not to be moved by the ending. Hopefully it is available on DVD now as it belongs in anyone`s collection.
A Hard Day's Night (1964)
Still excellent after all these years
I remember watching this film in the cinema back in 1964 when Beatlemania was just starting. I watched it again last night on the new dvd release and enjoyed just as much. The sound mix on the songs is very good although they could have probably cleaned the film up a bit! There are some scratch marks visible. Good to see the boys again, but a bit sad as well now two of them are gone. Richard Lester was way ahead of his time, no fancy computers to edit with back then! Well worth seeing.
From Hell (2001)
Not as good as I thought it would be
The Observer newspaper rated this film highly, so I was looking forward to renting it when it came out. The creation of London in 19th century is brilliantly done, you can almost smell it! However the characters did not match the production. Robbie Coltrane is always worth watching of course, but Johnny Depp seemed miscast as the detective investigating. The dialogue from the prostitutes reminded me of some 19th century soap opera and Heather Graham is far too good looking to play a prostitute. Worth renting for the effects and creation of Victorian London, but that is about it.
