Next of Kin (2018)
Bad female role model
I have noticed that a good number of British shows produced in the last five or so do their best to present a main female character as a strong woman who does not back down under duress. In case of Next of Kin, writer/director/producer fail miserably. Mona, the main character does things that are utterly stupid. And certainly not a good role model for a wife.
If I were her husband I would have divorced her by episode 4.
I am getting an interesting take on what British marketing thinks people want to watch. Or, most likely, what they think should be fed to audiences. Force fed is more accurate.
Who Is Erin Carter? (2023)
Important details are overlooked
If your spouse does not get home until the wee hours of the morning, would you be peaceful asleep in bed? I doubt it. If the following morning your spouse's face is bruised and scratched would you ask any questions? I am certain you would.
This is just episode 1.
There is more, much more that the director is overlooking and ignoring. Why? Is it because the writer could not come up with a good explanation or is it because director/writer did not want to distract the audience with what they consider irrelevant to the main plot and hence the plot's message?
What is the message? I have failed to absorb it. Is it that women know how to use their fists? See an initial scene where the pre-teen daughter pummels another kid, a scene I found disturbing because I abhor violence particularly between children.
I miss the good old British mystery. What happened?
