Pearl Harbor (2001)
Pretty Good
I did not like the love story. It seemed to drone on and on and although I like Ben Affleck, his character was getting on my nerves. I was ready to turn the movie off but then Ben Affleck's character "died" and the romance between Harnett and Beckinsdale began to bloom. That kept me hanging on long enough to see the actually attack on Pearl Harbor which was so interesting I couldn't take my eyes off the t.v. The special effects were so good and for the first time in my life I really understood how horrible that day really was. Comparing that day to September 11 now makes sense.
The best performance I think was by John Voight who should win something for his portrayal of FDR. Cuba Gooding, Jr., Alec Baldwin and Dan Akroyd were okay too.
Please go see this movie. If you don't want to see the love story then fast forward it to the attack scene.
This movie gets an 8 out of 10.
Carrie (1976)
A Very Tragic Thriller
I would never call Carrie a horror movie like Halloween or Friday the 13th. The movie is really a Tragedy/Thriller. I had to see it two times before I understood what really happened in the movie. At first, I thought Amy Irving's character was in on the prom joke but I realized after seeing it a second time that she wasn't and that she was really sincere in helping Carrie "fit in". It also occurred to me that she would not have used her boyfriend that way. Also, I realized the second time that William Katt's character did not know about the joke either, that he was actually outraged and would have helped Carrie if he had not been knocked out by the bucket that fell on his head.
But the movie was still confusing in some parts: 1.) At the prom after the bucket of blood fell on Carrie was everyone really laughing at her or was it her imagination? I was surprised that her nice gym teacher would find that 'joke' funny.
2.) Did William Katt's character die after being hit with the bucket or was he just unconscious? It appeared to me that Carrie must have thought he was dead which sent her over the edge. She wouldn't have killed him too, would she?
3.) Why was Nancy Allen's character so sadistic? She wasn't just cruel, this girl was sick. For example she loved watching her boyfriend ax a pig to death. It would have helped to understand what made her this way.
Otherwise the movie was very good. I felt so sorry for Carrie who was so sweet and would have been a good friend to anyone. That prom should/could have been the happiest time of her life and the beginning of a new life experience. Instead, everything was destroyed. How sad.
I give this film an 8 out of 10.
Perfect (1985)
Very Good Movie
I was surprised to see that this movie was only rated a 4 by IMBD members. I loved this movie. Jamie Lee Curtis and John Travolta were very good in their roles. The double story lines about the MacKenzie and Health Clubs reports were very realistic and interesting.
But I guess the real reason I liked this movie is because I decided two months ago to get into shape. I am already seeing amazing results and this movie with it's health club story and terrific soundtrack help keep me motivated. But even if you aren't currently involved in a fitness program you will find it impossible to keep from dancing to the music in this movie. One song I loved was "Masquerade" by Berlin.
For those of you who are wondering if you should see this movie, please ignore the negative things you have heard and rent it anyway.
