Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
So what message do we take from this movie?
I have no idea.
To heck with changing the justice system and all.
What I wanted to see was people who destroyed Clyde's family brought to justice or at least them coming to terms with what they had done to Clyde and really truly repent.
But never once people seem to care about the reason for Clyde's outrage. That really bothered me.
You know what pissed me off the most? The very person who should sincerely apologize to Clyde was Nick and he never once did throughout the movie. In fact, he only cares about this whole thing when his family is put in danger and he has the nerve to get angry at Clyde after he took a deal with the criminals for the conviction rate which made the sentence for the murder of Clyde's family only a few years in prison. And after Clyde dies, Nick has the nerve to become a lawyer who helps people like Clyde? Why couldn't he fight for justice for Nick's family back then? How come Nick gets to crush justice for Clyde's family and just walk away with no consequences for what he did - other than stepping down from ADA?
I hate this whole narrative of the movie where no one seems to understand Clyde's crusade. He is only seen as a terrorist - which is true and of course, Clyde should pay for his crimes - but it is so much more than that.
I don't know... I just felt so enraged and confused as to what this movie is trying to tell us. Justice never wins?
Bull (2016)
Where the show is headed...
Up until the end of season 1, I would have given 10 and a two thumbs up for this show. I liked how Bull actually cared about justice and had really good instinct about whether the client was indeed innocent and was in need of help. I liked that he did not succumb to monetary seduction from many potential black clients. I also loved how he managed his crew with just the right dosage of sincerity. Sometimes even overwhelmingly caring. But he was right to step in when he did. And the way he swayed the jury. In each episode, I was thinking 'isn't this the work of art?' They made it so good that it never hit that threshold of becoming a jury tempering. But... starting from last couple of episodes in season 1, Bull suddenly became this money loving opportunist who will take on big clients (although he was doing them as an owed favour). Then came season 2 and Bull had a complete change of character and he became that average boss who would yell at his crew for no reason and do things for money. And he's reluctant to take on clients who really need help. I just wish we got Bull back. The real Bull from season 1. The producers should really think hard about Bull's character development and where the show is headed.
Burden of Truth (2018)
Brilliant script and authentic legal drama
This show had a strong plot and had a very logical and natural flow. The progress of the legal case was portrayed in a very believable and authentic manner. The show also explored relationships and character development really well. (Like how Joanna, as ruthless as she may have been as a lawyer, chose to change for the better. Same thing for Alan.) More than anything, I was surprised by Kristin Kreuk's performance. I remembered her from Smallville but I never expected that she would fit right into the character of an aggressive, strategic, proficient, but humanistic city lawyer. Two thumbs up for overall directing, script, and performances of the actors and actresses.
Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (2016)
The real deal starts on season 2
Before giving it negative reviews, please get past the first season and the real value and strength of this show will become evident, starting in season 2. Yes, the pilot and the entire season 1 was more of a mock-off teen drama with rustic touch. The actors weren't fully in their character (maybe this is the reason as to the criticism of acting) and the plot just started to thicken by the end of season 1. Oh, and tell me about some of the most unwise decisions that the characters make which frustrated me. But, wow, what a comeback in season 2. Yes, the show is not without its weaknesses but the acting has gotten much, much better in season 2 (by all the actors and actresses) and the overall quality of the show was enhanced on all aspects (like visual effects - much better in season 2) What I appreciated the most was how the show richly explored character development and relationships - Especially Malec! If you are ever stuck on relationship, watch Malec (Magnus and Alec) work on their relationship. It is full of mistakes but there's so much to learn from how they work it out in the end. Clary was finally fighting like a shadow hunter and not being a damsel in distress, which was a huge relief for me. It was amusing to see Izzy let her guard down for once - I mean she was like the only character that was the closest to normal in season 1, who mended everyone's fences. She deserved little bit of her own lost time. Loved how she came back from it so strong.
Long story short, the show has finally has established its course starting in season 2 so I strongly encourage viewers to keep up with this show. It is worth it.
Deception (2018)
This show definitely brings nostalgia
People say the show is similar to certain shows and it is probably true - Mentalist, White Collar, Hustle, Leverage etc. I see a little bit of all of them all mixed into this show. Nevertheless, I find that actually pleasing because there are so many dark Marvel shows or gory shows like Game of Thrones and we rarely see this kind of light but quite witty shows these days. Yes, there is some cheesiness and at times it feels a bit Japanese (the concept of odd-eyed villain reminded me of Detective Conan) but overall, the show is quite focused towards one big plot and I love the chemistry of the magic team. This may be my personal opinion but I feel the actor of main characters Jonathan/Cameron is doing a fantastic job portraying that subtle difference between the two. I would love to see more of this show beyond season 1.
Runaways (2017)
(spoiler alert!!!) Character development - Gert
Okay, I honestly love how the writers are connecting the nerdy chubby girl Gert and the school jock Chase. I really do. It's not your typical TV romance. I mean as of now, Chase seems to be interested in Karolina but who knows, maybe he will fold someday and start to like Gert.
But honestly, I wish Gert can be really annoying sometimes. Yeah, sure, Gert can be jealous because Chase broke his promise to study Spanish with her, supposedly to see Karolina, but god, don't cut off every conversation Chase has with Karolina. And for god's sake, don't make Gert use circumstances to manipulate and force Chase into spending time with her. Like Spanish lessons may understandable but Gert uses all the excuses she can so he will spend time with her. What does that communicate to the viewers? Gert can't be confident enough to win him over without all the manipulation? If the writers are going for romance between Gert and Chase, they better think serious about Gert's character development, because she is just not lovable, not because of her physical appearance, but the way she is so desperate to win Chase over. Let Gert's character be charming and confident with her intelligence, someone that Chase can fall for. My god, it is annoying me to my guts how they are portraying Gert.
Storywise, I haven't read the comics, so I am just riding it out to see how they are going to play out the entire plot with so many characters. But I don't find the story line that bad.
The Avengers (2012)
Chemical mixture of triumph
Putting the quote of Dr. Benner in an ironic manner, this movie simply stands out as this year's mega-hit with the perfect chemical mixture of high ordered success, not chaos. I was not into the whole comics business my entire life, but I always enjoyed Marvel characters coming alive on screen. But how could I have imagined that the admirable characters who were all awesome on their own, could have even more impact all gathered together?
To be honest, no matter how much i want to whine about the very predictable storyline that could potentially be the only flaw in this movie, I gotta say, even the storyline is one of the element that makes this movie glorious. I mean, come on, this is comics!! It would actually be foolish to expect a complicated storyline. If the plot was too complex with twists and all, then we can't focus on characters. Marvel was smart in that they kept the plot simple and sweet for this grand movie with so many great characters - heroes defeat the bad guys. No mind games.
Now then, our heroes... My gosh!! the untamed and invincible Hulk with surprisingly advanced brain, proud first avenger Captain America with super strength and mighty shield, the one and only sassy genius/mechanics master Iron man, mighty Thor The God and Guardian of Earth, handyman Hawkeye the archer, and the sneaky spies Black Widow and Nick Fury... So we got all combinations - handiness, brain, super strength, persuasive skills, oh and a finishing touch of invincibility. When put together, they obtain the perfect equation for the dream team. I think the thrill and the excitement comes from this perfect combination - filling in the lacking 2% from each character.
And of course, the coming together of these characters and the exceptional chemistry of the team has to come from superb acting that contributes to creating genuine and believable characters that may even delude audience into thinking they are for real. Especially for Mark Ruffalo, I gotta apologize to Ed Norton, he did a better and marvellous job of portraying the complete opposite of Hulk state - a quiet and introverted genius whom you could never guess to be the most wild and hot tempered monster. And Robert, Robert, Robert... He is simply a darling as always, smooth talking and adding the perfect comic relief at the right moments - but never losing his cool as Iron Man when he's on duty.
All in all, this movie would be a legend to comics fans!!! Loved loved loved it!!
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
Patience!
My first impression was, is this really Harry potter and the Half blood prince? Where's all the missing pieces? I'm just hoping on one thing - that since there's the two part deathly hollows left, they'll have plenty to work with - like maybe a recount of a huge battle at Hogwarts between DA (Dumbledore's Army)and the Death Eaters on the day of Dumbledore's death and other missing pieces they completely left out!Maybe they deliberately did that so they can include it in the next one or at least deal with them in some way later in the two part of the Harry Potter Sequel Finale.
So before disappointment, before criticism, if a true Harry Potter fan, Let's wait and see how it all wraps up in the end. And let's hope for more action in the last two Harry Potter movies.
Overall, the movie was alright - focused more on the romance/personal lives then heavy stuff. It was okay.
Marley & Me (2008)
A movie that drew a beautiful watercolor paint of life
Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston didn't really click to me at first. I thought it would be a comedy with stupid sense of humour.
To my surprise, it was a beautiful drama about building a family. and the performances were actually as real as it could be.
Although the main storyline follows through a normal real couple starting a family, with an adorable puppy that held them together, there was never a dull moment in the movie.
I want to praise Owen Wilson for a more serious toll on his acting career and Jen Aniston was simply amazing portraying her character full of emotion and charm.
Made of Honor (2008)
Selfish
I felt really bad for Collin. Yes, it was a heart warming and sweet happy ending for Tom and Hannah, which probably satisfied some people. But confessing love right in the middle of the wedding? That's just selfish. I mean Collin had absolutely no idea about the chemistry going on between Tom and Hannah. And suddenly Bam! So called best friend or maid of honor suddenly shouts his love for Hannah. And the love of his life (or so Collin thought), Hannah, tells him "You are a perfect guy, but not for me"
ON THE FREAKING WEDDING DAY! A day that should be down right charming has gone completely cold blooded. I mean it's a movie so all Collin does is punch Tom, but seriously...
Imagine this in a real life. I think "My Best Friend's Wedding' is way better scripted because it's close to the reality. No matter how hard you try, and no matter how much you love that someone, you can't force someone's heart. Tom and Hannah had feelings for each other from the beginning in my opinion. So I'm thinking, why didn't they just click together before this whole Wedding frenzy? It's like Collin only existed to "confirm" Tom and Hannah's love. You might say "whatever, Collin will deal with it" But when you give your heart to someone and decide to marry that person, it's a life changing experience. i just hate how this movie portrays Tom "stealing the bride" as an okay thing.
