Just My Luck (2006)

It's trying...
3 June 2006
It's trying to be a funny romantic movie, but it ends up being mostly gross-out humor. And, too much of it that I think it detracts from the story it wants to tell.

Chris Pine (the male love-interest) is endearing and devoted, both in his attraction to Ashley (Lohan's character) and for the Brit band he's "managing," McFly.

Lindsay Lohan is cute and plays her character well, but I'm not sure I totally buy into this movie. Something about it just hits me as off.

However, I didn't expect anything from this, other than something light which that I was glad for.

Samaire Armstrong really saves the movie for me. You believe that her character is sincere, honest, and good.

An unexpectedly pleasant surprise!
17 March 2006
For someone like me who didn't watch much of Dave Chappelle or who isn't big into the hip-hop music, I was actually pleased with this. Maybe it's with the help of Michel Gondry, who I read/seen on TV say that he wanted to humanize the whole experience, both of the artists and the audience. That he did as I was completely moved and knew if I had been there, I would've felt the spiritual connection with the audience that I'm sure those there felt.

I think it was definitely worth the near 10 bucks. A fair amount of good rap/hip-hop music (dude, I was even bobbing my head), a fair amount of interviews, a fair amount of comedy, and a fair amount of social commentary. This movie provides a face for the reason why hip-hop is relevant to our culture. And, I seriously give mad props to Dave for getting GOOD rap acts for his party.

Ultimately, I think it's actually better going in not knowing what to expect from it as well.

Save your money; wait for the DVD rental.

Soooo disappointing.

I thought with John Cusack being involved, it would be a solid romantic comedy. Though he is the best part, even he couldn't save this movie from stinking.

It has moments where it's cute, sarcastic/ironic-funny; but overall it was predictable, stereotypical, and just too corny in the end. I mean, after all, you'd think with a title like _Must Love Dogs_, that the movie would focus on how dogs bring them together, but it's not really about that. Lane and Cusack had chemistry, but it fell flat amongst the other characters in the movie.

As my roommate says and I totally agree here, "It's like Someone Like You meets You've Got Mail without any decent payoff."

Short but sweet
13 March 2004
This not only is one of the best short films I've ever seen to date, but it's also one of the hidden treasures on the Director series DVD for Michel Gondry.

The use of black and white cinematography make the theme of the short that much more poignant. The actor who portrays the protagonist does a fantastic job in making you believe in him and not thinking he's this obsessed kid . .. because really, what 12 year old is really obsessed with love? It's so innocent, at least for him.

Sorry so short, but I can't really write anything without spoiling it, so just see it!

Fantastic performances
8 June 2003
I don't think I've seen a movie with such amazing performances in a LONG time! The more work I see of Anne Bancroft, the more I'm impressed with her craft. I've never seen Patty Duke in anything before, so needless to say, I was blown away by her performance as well.

The most intense acting is done without any dialogue, especially where Anne Sullivan insists that Helen learn how to eat properly.

Such incredible performances (very Oscarly deserved!) and even more incredible story to boot!

Chicago (2002)

One of the better musicals I've seen...
8 April 2003
I haven't seen too many musicals and that's only: Annie, Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady, Dancer in the Dark, and Moulin Rouge... and I have to say that _Chicago_ is one of the better musicals I've ever seen. I don't know that I'd deem it as Best Picture, for which it won, but it's definitely interesting to see the Academy award a film for being this fun and entertaining.

I was impressed with the depth of the characters and that the musical numbers added even more depth to the story and characters. Everyone's performances, with maybe Richard Gere, were really outstanding. I've seen most of the other films up for Oscars and I personally think that Renee should've gotten the Best Actress instead of Nicole Kidman. Her performance showed much more range than Nicole's (not that I mind that she won, but you know how the Academy works).

People at my office played the soundtrack over and over to the point that it annoyed me to not wanting to see the film. I don't think the soundtrack is good enough to stand on its own... you REALLY need to see the film to appreciate the songs, which is a great versatile, but hooky soundtrack.

I see a lot of films and altho I enjoy most of them, rarely do I use the word "entertaining" to describe them. _Chicago_ is definitely one that is ENTERTAINING!

Surprisingly entertaining!
3 March 2003
I saw it last night and was surprised that I enjoyed it. I just thought it was going to be about billiards (not that I terribly mind that) and hustling, having the same sort of stiffness of The Color of Money, but it was more than that. It brought universal appeal into it about doing/playing something just for the love of it.

Christopher Walken had a minor part, but he was great in it. Gregory 'Mars' Martin, who plays the main character, reminded me a lot of a younger John Cusack, looks and style. Michael Rosenbaum (Lex from Smallville) and their set of friends added great humor to the screen.

I just love that the movie reaches my generation and was fun to watch. Not the best billiards movie, of course, but I was definitely entertained.

EXCELLENT performances!

I think this is definitely a role played well by Robin Williams. The movie itself really wasn't as creepy as I thought it was going to be. You end up feeling sympathetic towards Sy, rather than thinking he deserves any charges that may be brought against him.

I'd go see it again just because it's visually beautiful and Robin Williams' portrayal is just SUPERB!
