Altered States (1980)
confusing movie with a confusing ending
**SPOILERS**I'm not going to talk about the story and the plot-holes here ,the fellow readers did that already,so that leave me to the FX, you got a goat with multi-eyes,a strange book with a bucket of blood on it (is it the nicronomicon the book of the dead ? ) anyway, those images or the hellucination scenes are not that bad for a sci-fi, its quick though.
a few scenes from the movie are unexplained (the ending for example) spoiler* mr.jessip resisting his personal demons by banging on side walls really silly and lame as a fello reader mentioned* and how come a 2 guys fainted after exposing to high energy through a tv monitor and nothing happened to the wife where she exposed to the same energy directly by opening the door of that machine!!!
overall, the movie starts slow(the dialogue) then become exciting when the (hellucinations) began then slow again(as you can see its badly scripted)the FX and the cast was somehow ok but couldnt save the movie, i have to mention that "altered states" is mix of romance (not that much) and sci-fi and little bit of scare (that 3 eye goat reminds me of satan in some old horror movies lol)
The Chilling (1989)
linda blair didnt do anything here
i have to admit something here, i watched this movie because im a big fan of linda blair,in all movies she had a big role within the story: exorcist, hell night, chained heat even that repossesed but this movie is BORING that you cant imagine thats "her".man her role are hardly recognizable.
ok now lets talk about those mutants :the ppl behind this film should made their minds straight before scripting whether its a mutant movie or a zombie movie, some readers referring to them as zombies are they zombies ? NO because i didnt saw any of them walk slow and eat human flesh in any scene, ok are they mutants? NO because mutants dont look/act funny, and i saw one scene were a mutant tickling someone's back and have a quick conversation with him, according to this "horror" catagorized movie they are "crygenic corpses"who are wearing contaminated costumes and chasing or scaring linda blair and her BORING cast.
what can i say guys, linda blair shouldnt be in this movie ,and its a shame her role was a waste of her time and ours too.
i dont recommend this movie to linda blair fans,im sure they will be upset,i also dont recommend horror movie collectors to buy/rent this one,and to B-movie fans :you can watch it at your own decision
Tourist Trap (1979)
a good campy flick..sort off
i saw it today on DVD,nothing much in the extras, its nice flick but needed more GORE and more VICTIMS,not going to talk about the acting and the story because the readers here thanksfully already done that, but i have to say this :1-the real babe here was tanya roberts ,her role was a supporting type which let me down "a little" 2-the story somhow are not similar to MANIAC,there are some related scenes like the maniq-models surrounding the victim though, now lets see : supernatural power + chuck connors + crazieness and you will get the final result = MANIAC meet CARRIE (tourist trap) ,all got the point ?,hope so :)))))
all in all,its a good movie and i got ONE good scare from chuck connors
Gin gwai (2002)
a DISTURBING horror movie at last
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** finally ,i saw a "NEW" horror movie that really scared me for all my life watched the 80's ,90s, and 00's horror flicks and there are few that REALLY scared me like exorcist, evil dead.. and now "the eye",even if its not marked as"made in usa".
i really liked this movie, however the scary scenes are few but CREEPY ones indeed, just to think of it,while watching this flick at theatre here in "singapore"ppl were screaming during the fright scenes,".
simi-SPOILER :"the first half of the movie was really top-notch horror:
lets see here hmmm ..the isle ghost"nice camera work here" ,class ghost"everybody jumped including the king of horror movies himself {moi}",oh yeah the elevator scene"will let you on the edge of your seat i hoped for more than one ghost in that scene, it would be THE CREEPIEST SCENE if you like to vote for that ,there are other scary scenes of course like the female ghost with her "so cute" baby,my god, just look at her tongue licking a piece of meat while her eyes wide open. my oh my,i didnt saw that in any horror movie before, the ending was
somehow pridected by yours truly, after all she've been through, the cure wasnt good enough and the curse wasnt over also, how ironic the destiny solved her problem"sad ending indeed ,i felt sorry for that ahh..i mean no sequels" END OF SPOILER .
kudos to the filmmakers and producers of "THE EYE" ,the camera work here was absolutly perfect horror picture ,my rating will be "B" grade for "no-blood" here , the makeup and the sound effect will get an "A" ,another "A"for camera work, and "c"for the short english dialoge in tailand ,(i hoped for more english dialoge to give the case some publicity and more effect on the storyline, all in all its was a pleasure watching this horror movie from hong kong , and as far as the quality of the movie are concerned ,it's a " big A "
seems to me that those asian fimmakers were learning from their colleages's mistakes at the states, and learned that making a horror movie is not that difficult, but the trick is how to shoot the scene by using the right camera angles, if there are other oriental upcoming horror movies in the horizon ,like "THE EYE" i will WATCH them.
Dog Soldiers (2002)
finally a british werewolf film
when was the last you saw a british werewolf movie? you bet, long time ago, this is the best comback, indeed i dont want to repeat the story and the cast here, most members done that already,so i will talk about the death scenes here, its nice and gory enough to let you enjoy this fright, when was the last time you saw a werewolf positioning a victim on his knee and have a big bite on the neck, beautifully shooted by camera work (i just hoped it will be longer than 1 seconds) i guess the DVD version will contain more blood and deleted scenes in the future,of course i ll buy it :))))))))))
Happy Hell Night (1991)
a nice 80's slasher film
i was really entertained by this movie it got scares and some one-liner jokes by the killer which cracked my jaw from laughing, but then again, the movie got a nice horror story which is (in summary:2 guys trying to take a picture of a prisoner(who happened to be a devil-worshipper wearing a priest costume) in an old asylum, and guess what happened later ,of course, all hell breaking loose :)end summary
the cast did well here, the gore and blood were not enough though for my taste (im bald too )however ,genre fans will really enjoy this movie
Boa (2001)
B.O.A = Boring Or Awuful ,pick one
i rented this movie because i like animals/monsters/crawlers movies but felt cheated after watching this, nothing new here ,"new alcatraz" as a title couldnt help get my attention in the first place, but as fan of the genre i dont recommend the fans to buy this movie, specially after the movie been released as "BOA" in DVD format to fool us with that snake cover.
i have to mention there are plot-holes here and there too, the cast were boring (except the last 25 mins)the location & camera work was nice though, hmmm..the CGI wasnt a good thing either in this b-(c) grade flick, the snake looked like it came from a pc game or something, the result= the movie absolutly lacked fright and gore which coulda save the movie, overall :dont waste you money on this trash, instead rent/buy "CUJO" im sure you will have heck of good time watching a rabid dog attacking people :)))))))))
Village of the Damned (1995)
oh, its another john carpenter movie
I ve seen all john carpenter's movies and "V.O.T.D" is one of his best COINS (imho) and i really liked it, the story of course is a remake of the same title(1960),and based (lightly) on true events before i review :i have to say that i dont like people remaking movies, most of them are trash, however, this one is definitly exceptional and J.C did a great job remaking/directing this movie the camera work is perfectly executed(shooted) on the other-side of the coin the cast were at their best(C.REEVE,M.hamell....) the death scenes were awesome but needed more which i have no obejections the kids were really cool, and believable in their face expressions
ALL IN ALL :this movie is a real shiny coin in carpenter's collection if you are a big fan of his collection, dont miss it for other genre fans:its an entertaining flick
Fright Night (1985)
an entertaining vampire movie
the story goes like this :a boy believe that his strange male niebours are night-walkers with fangs ,the effects are really cool. and the cast did very well "chris sarandon portrays prince of darkness, and william ragsdale as the boy,AND roddy mcdowell as vampire hunter from"fright night"show
im not a big vampire movies fan but i really LIKED this one and i RECOMMEND this movie (and fright night part II) to fans who like vampire movies specially ,and all non-genre fans generally and this is a very nice vampire flick from the 80s ,it has it all scares, romance and of course jokes,
The Evil Dead (1981)
it's the BEST horror film ever made
it has it all: scares+atmosphere+musical score(the best one is that high muted violen)really grab you tension more to what will happen for the coming movie's events, the cast did perfectly very well and of course the movie's budget is something under 380,000 $ and to this day nobody did what the director sam raimi did to his "E.D"'s first installment, there are dozens of movies copying the "E.D"'s storyline but none of them even could top this movie, heck even "E.D 2 " couldnt top the first part of course thats my humble opinion
[summary :5 students went camping in to the woods (where nobody reached there before) and found a cabin, after exploring it, they found the book of the dead a.k.a NICRONOMICON and a recorder and a tape explaining what lies beneath the cabin which the events starts from there:end summary]
the location camera work in this film effects the story perfectly i hoped to see that documentary"behind the wood" which supposed to be included in the DVD versions but wasn't ,
overall :this movie is simply UNFORGETTABLE PLEASURE after seen it first time for past ,present, and future fans this is a horror film made in 1981 (released in 1982) and all genre fans should own a (VHS/DVD)copy of this movie,
Army of Darkness (1992)
an entertaining E.D part, with 2 diffrent endings ?
i couldnt agree more about what the people says here about the movie, yes its great,i didn't liked the third one to be mix of horror and comedy, but thats fine with me,i'm sure when the movie first was released, the fans expected another 4th sequel because of that ending where "ash" find himself near the judgment day and everything around him ve'been destroyed ,the new ending is {SPOILER}where "ash" fight a deadtie in the "s-mart" market i believe everyone saw that ending
all in all A VERY ENTERTAINING SEQUEL,rumors are high for part 4 start VOTING lol
The Creeps (1997)
to all genre fans :this is NOT a horror movie
the next time i order any movie i should read reviews first ,check imdb second ,and third decide to buy or not .i failed in doing so when i bought this movie, what a waste of 5 $. this not a horror movie of course ,so all genre fans please
reconsider before buying any full moon movies(most of them are nice) but not this movie"the creeps ",the only creeps here are the cast except phil fondacaro the summary: a mad scientist recreate the horror legends but in a midgit form(dracula, franky, mummy, wolfy)and try to rule the world by controlling the midgits( they look really funny)
nice performance by phil fondacaro(the best actor here) as dracula the rest of the cast really dont know what they ar doing.
of course you can watch this movie if you are really drunk
