Dead Moon Rising (2007)
"Bad taste" meets "Shawn of the dead"!
I loved this movie! It was probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen considering effects, props, camera, sound and general feel, and still I loved it!
So if it is so bad, why did I love it? It's a standard clichè movie with flesh-eating zombies, so you already know the story of this movie. The internal organs that are being eaten look really cheap, and I even think I saw a string of sausages somewhere in the mess... You can clearly see a difference in image-quality throughout the different cuts. You can clearly hear that sound-effects have been added, because they sound really cheap. Cutting seems a bit weird at times... So why did I love this movie??
It is clear that this movie had a low budget, but it was VERY WELL made despite this fact! Most of the actors are doing a very descent job, many of their comments made me laugh out loud and fall off my chair, the women are beautiful, and the constant weird twists throughout the movie are actually a bit interesting! All the shortcomings (bad effects, sounds etc..) actually added to the experience in a strange way, setting a special atmosphere throughout the movie. All that put together (and being able to look past the rough surface this movie very noticeably carries) left me feeling slightly impressed and very entertained. This movie is WELL WORTH WATCHING all the way through!
If you didn't like Bad Taste, then you will likely dislike this movie. But with the right sense of humor and an open mind (as stated in a few other comments as well), you will with no doubt love almost every minute of this movie!
In conclusion, this movie isn't for everyone, but it proves that entertainment doesn't need a budget!
Magus (2008)
The movie struggles to keep my attention
This movie sounded very cool when I heard about it first, but I was disappointed to find out it was almost nothing like I thought it was. I expected a grand adventure to hunt down the mighty Magus, but instead I was treated to a 3 person army of slightly worn-out "wizards" that obviously are no match for the "mighty" Magus.
The conversations seem unrealistic at many points, the acting is a bit "forced" and I somehow get the feeling that I'm watching a toned-down version of power-rangers. Yes, that's right, I feel like I'm sometimes watching a kids-movie where they couldn't afford a fight-coordinator, and had to improvise the scenes themselves.
The story in itself seems lousy at best, and contains the clichè characters struggling to discover their true lost/undiscovered strengths. I felt like I had seen this movie many times before..
There are a few upsides to this movie which must be mentioned. The magic-effects actually look good, though they seem a bit limited in number of different effects.. As a man, I definitely enjoyed the nudity (hehe..), and I liked the concept of the movie. I'm sad to say, the list of upsides stops around that point..
All in all, it was *almost* worth watching, but definitely not worth paying for.. (and I put it that way because I'm nice..) During the movie I was struggling to keep me from shutting it off, and was left unimpressed at the ending screen. You can easily skip this movie, unless you really enjoy the concept of "real" magic, and want to see a few nice magic-effects. But honestly, you would MUCH rather just watch the Harry Potter movies for that.
