Troy (2004)
a bit disappointing
When I saw the trailer of Troy, I'd figured that this is the movie to see in a cinema! So I did.
It was very impressive, it is huge, it is overwhelming...all those soldiers and ships! There is so much to see, especially on a wide screen, never a dull moment. But: if english is not your native language you also have to read the subtitles! And you just don't have the time to capture the whole image on the screen and read whatever they are saying. Another thing is that I expected more acting and less fighting. I had set my hopes on Brad Pitt who has proven many times to be a great actor. In this film his character is "flat" and all you learn about Achilles is his passion for fighting. Then again it was fun to see Brad in a mini-skirt :-)
If you are not from another planet you know from the beginning that Troy is going to fall. The director did a great job on letting you sympathize with the people of Troy and with Achilles and his army. Anoying part in the movie is the story about Helena and Orlando Bloom; I think it was just there because people like a lovestory in a movie and to get younger people (girls) to the cinema as well because of Orlando Bloom.
Overall it was a nice lesson in Greek History, impressive to watch, and poor acting. I give it a 6.5 out of 10.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
a must-see movie!
I have seen this movie twice and even the second time it was still a very special movie although you know what is going to happen...Big compliment for writer Stephen King! (I am wondering if it really happend, although it is too good to be true). Wonderfull acting, great story...with emotional moments but not overdone in any way. My favorite scene is when Andy receives the old books and records (big black CD's from the old days:-) and plays a part from a opera through the prison intercom! If you do have the chance: watch it!
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Excellent and realistic !
I just saw Saving Private Ryan and it knocked me of my feet! Here in Europe the WO II is still nearby and present: everybody has a grandfather or another relative that survived the war and told stories about it...Living and visiting the countries where it all took place, you can still see the remains of that terrible war, you can still find (old) people who still have memories and nightmares about it. I have seen many movies about this war, but not one of them equals this one! Very realistic, outstanding camera-work and great acting, especially by Tom Hanks. A true masterpiece worth watching if you have the oppurtunity.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
Wonderful!
What an outstanding movie! Great acting by Depp and especially by DiCaprio! If you have the change to watch this movie: DO it! ;-) Just sit down and enjoy...It is touching, humorous, sad, cheerful...it is just like life! And also young Juliet Lewis is performing very well, always as herself...well...in every movie I saw with her she is - so it seems - a lot like herself. Anyway: this movie is one you are not likely to forget!
The Devil's Own (1997)
Brilliant!
Wonderful movie, great acting! It surprises me that this movie has a very low rating, because I think it is very much worth watching! Great acting from Ford and Pitt! Besides that I think this movie let's a person understand what it is like to be an Irish person, what it feels like if your country is in a war. It shows respect for a young guy who is trying to do something for his country (and if that country would be the USA the ratings for this movie would be a lot higher I think).
Le huitième jour (1996)
stunning!
My all-time favorite movie! I have seen many movies, but this one beats them all! Excelent acting, wonderful story. You will, as a "normal" caring person start to love George. Altough he is an actor, he is also himself and a very lovable person. And maby most important thing: you will learn to respect & look different to people with Down Syndrome.
Legends of the Fall (1994)
Too much of everything
Although I think this movie is worth watching, it s a bit too much of everything in my taste...Too dramatic, too many deaths, too much unfortune...But wonderful acting especially by Bratt Pit! The scene when Tristan comes back and sits with his father on a bench is my favorite scene. Another disturbing thing about this movie is the aging of the people who play in it...Isabel turns into a real nice young woman over a few years and Tristan doesn't change a bit.
Benny & Joon (1993)
Wonderful!
Great movie, great acting! This is a movie you will never forget (I won't:-) Touching, funny, ...just watch it! :-)Especially the parts with the electric iron is brilliant and makes you think: why do we all makes things SO complicated?
