The Kumars at No. 42 (2001–2006)
funny
31 January 2004
i don't really watch comedy shows and I never watch talk shows....but I like this one. As others have commented, the grandmother is the star of the show, but the concept is original and funny and overall I like it.

I just wish some network in the USA would pick this up....yeah right!

Ladyhawke (1985)
Simply ridiculous
29 November 2003
It's too bad that a film of such promise turned out so badly. I watched it expecting a nice mediaeval-fantasy, but I ended up laughing the whole way through.

The plot is, to say the least, predictable. Characterizations (with the exception of Matthew Broderick as the Mouse) are extremely poor. The romance between Michelle Pfeiffer and Rutger Hauer's characters is designed to tug at viewers heartstrings (a passionate love, a jealous rival, an evil curse, etc), but we never really care about either of them or their fate together. This is due to the poor characterizations and the fact that we can guess how the film will end within the first twenty minutes.

The fight scenes, promised to be "action-packed and exciting", are some of the worst I've ever seen. Even villains aren't that stupid.

In terms of historical accuracy (even for a fantasy)...well, don't even get me started. To begin with, the entire film is scored to terrible mid-eighties keyboard music. That alone made the film much, much worse than it needed to be. The anachronism of hearing music suited to a 1980s television series while watching pseudo-mediaeval battles...I was in hysterics.

I really did start this film expecting to greatly enjoy it, so it's not that I'm prejudiced or anything. And I will admit that I enjoyed watching Matthew Broderick. His performance as the Mouse is the only thing that made me finish the movie. But even he can't save this bomb.

No stars for this one...I give it a turkey. Or is that a turkeyhawke?

Great except the flash-forwards
19 July 2002
I just saw this movie, though I've wanted to for ages, and I was not disappointed. Anton Yelchin as Bobby Garfield in particular was absolutely dazzling, as was Mika Boorem as Carol, albeit in a much smaller role. Anthony Hopkins was fine, but I dont think this is one of his better movies. In fact, the whole thing seemed to me to kind of "pass on the torch" so to speak to a younger generation of actors...I know, I know, Hopkins just gets better with age, but still.

The only real complaint I had was the "flash-forward" bits of the film, with Bobby as an adult. I thought they were unnecessary and pretty cheesy, especially the part where he was talking to Molly...the film was complete without those bits at the beginning and end, and though it would definitely have a different feel - i.e. Carol (and less importantly Sully) wouldn't be doomed from the beginning, but I don't think that it's that important to the plot that they die later...just imho, of course. Still, this is a great film.

Smallville (2001–2017)
Pleasantly surprised....
23 June 2002
When I first saw the promo for this on tv, I groaned and laughed at the same time. I expected it to be just another teen show, with minimal plot and lots of shots of pretty people who can't act. But I had nothing to do the night of the premiere, so I sat and watched it - and I'm so glad I did! I'm not familiar with any of the previous Superman shows/comics etc, so I had no expectations in that regard, and I'm completely hooked into the plot. The acting, far from being poor, is in fact all round excellent. The one exception is Eric Johnson as Whitney - he may be a fine actor for all I know, but his lines are cringeworthy...it was actually painful in the season finale when he said goodbye to Lana. However, the other characters are well written and acted, and while there ARE a lot of shots of pretty people....heh, I'm not complaining. Tom Welling simply shines.
