The Purge (I) (2013)
7/10
Good Concept, Poor Execution.
8 June 2013
This movie stared off good, but halfway through it goes downhill.

It goes from being horror to action/thriller and the ending felt rushed with a few predictable twists.

If I'm feeling generous I'd give it a 7/10. It wasn't horrible, but it certainly didn't live up to the hype. I was a really excited to see it but came out a bit disappointed. Good concept, poor execution.

See now, what they SHOULD have done is make a movie about the Purge itself and the political, moral, and emotional implications it had on society as a whole, with maybe some character being an an-hero and trying to shut down the corrupt government and their "purge". but no... they made into some "been there done that" home invasion flick.

Remember during the beginning when some guy on the radio was talking about how the purge is really just a way to exterminate poor people? This movie had some much potential, they could have gone 100 different directions with it, but they chose the least interesting route.

I expected more from the makers of "Insidious" that's one of my favorite horror movies.

The ONLY horror in this movie was the intensity felt when the purge starts and possibly the creepy guy on the camera (his smile gave me the chills) but it quickly derails into a fast paced shoot 'em up.

Save your money and wait for a DVD release.

Contagion (2011)
6/10
Not sure what to think...
6 April 2012
Contagion was good, but don't let the trailer fool you. It's not an action-packed post-apocalyptic thriller. It's like a... slow moving, suspenseful drama. The movie focuses more on how ideas can be more dangerous than a virus when placed in the wrong hands. The movie is certainly more realistic then most virus/contamination flicks, meaning that it doesn't go into some overplayed, everyone drops dead like flies, kinda deal. The movie's main focus is on how we should or should not deal with such a crisis.

It's not your average disaters movie. No explosions and fights, very little violence. If anything This is more a thought provoking set piece rather than an actual movie. There's lots of emotion and mellowdrama and I'd be lying if I said it was captivating. However, against all odds, and even with it's flaws you still take something out of it in the end. And I believe that's what the writers intended. It's not about the story. It's really not. It's about the idea. It's about the "what if?" scenario. It's about that lingering thought in the back of your mind when the credits roll. You come out of not knowing exactly what to think. Did you like? Did you hate it? You're honestly not sure. All you know is it stuck with you for some reason.

This isn't the first time Matt Damon has been in a movie with that lingering effect. The movie "Hereafter" sort of leaves you with the same feeling at the end...

This is a movie that cannot be truly explained in words aside from what I have already done. All I can say is, watch it. And when you start watching it, completely erase your mind, don't try to think about it too much, don't go into expecting something. Just watch it. Regardless of how bored you get, watch it until the end. Then ask yourself how you feel afterwards... You may be surprised to find that you aren't really sure...

Buried (2010)
8/10
This Movie Will Make You Hate The Government
18 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
What would you do if you work up buried alive in a coffin, with nothing but a lighter, and a cell phone?

Ryan Reynolds delivers a fantastic performance in this exact situation. In the movie, Reynolds plays Paul, a truck driver who was delivering supplies to Iraq when his truck was attacked by some Iraqis. He wakes up 2 hours later in a coffin, buried 3 feet underground, with naught but a lighter and a cell phone. And this is where the movie begins.

For a movie that was shot entirely in a coffin, this was done pretty well. There's only one actor we see the entire movie, and that's Ryan, all the others are just voices on the phone. But it doesn't take away from the movie's feel. If anything, it adds to it. The entire movie being shot in a dark coffin, makes for a kind of... claustrophobic atmosphere. They wanted the viewers to feel how the actor was feeling. The understand his panic. To sense his fear. So, the audience stays with the actor the entire movie. he never gets a breath of fresh air, so why should we? The screen doesn't change to his wife being worried, or the FBI at their computers trying to trace his cell phone. No. It stays inside the coffin for the whole ride. and that's good. That's how it should be. It adds to the suspense.

There were multiple parts of the movie that aggravated me, not because they were bad, or didn't make sense, but because they involved phone calls to government offices, who seem (not surprisingly) more interested in money and avoiding publicity than a man's life. Now, being a man who hates the government already, I can honestly say this movie did nothing to change that. If anything, it made my feelings towards them that much worse. Because I just know, in real life, they would do the same thing.

Moving on to the acting. Ryan did a fantastic job. He portrayed the character's fear and panic quite well, and also, the moments of hysteria were done beautifully. There were also moments of sadness, and God help you if you don't cry during those moments. Overall he was brilliant, especially for being alone in the movie. And having nothing more than voices to play off of.

As for the violence, there was none. Which is extremely surprising for a Lisongate movie. The worst thing about this movie is the claustrophobic feeling. Besides that there's one scene with a snake that might freak some people out, and a scene involving bodily dismemberment, but it happens off screen, so you don't see anything. This movie is more of a suspense thriller than anything.

It was refreshing to see a thriller that didn't use gore or scare tactics. This was good old fashioned "mess with your head" type thriller that forces you to keep your eyes glued to the screen the whole time wondering what will happen to the character. You feel his fear, you feel his sadness, you feel his anger. You wish you could just jump right in there and save him yourself. The movie does a very good job of pulling you in.

It's hard to find any complaints about this movie, but if I had to, there'd only be two. The beginning, and the ending. The beginning because it is so prolonged and over done. And the ending because... well, I'm writing a spoiler-free review so I'll just say it just wasn't what I expected. Let's leave it at that.

Open Season 3 (2010)
3/10
Garbage, Garbage, Garbage...
17 January 2011
So, i saw Open Season 1 and 2, of course I wouldn't be watching 3 if I didn't. And I actually enjoyed the first one. It was funny, it was cute. It had Martin Lawerence, Ashton Kutcher, and Patrick Warburton. Then cam Open Season 2, a movie in which, the plot was very lacking, but the characters were still fun. There was one character in particular, a cat named Roger, who had this tendency to say the most random, out of the box, unrelated things, and it would always make you chuckle. And it wasn't even what he said so much as how he said it. However, they made the mistake of changing voice actors for the main characters. Although Mike Epps did a good Boog too. Now, Open Season 3... what a disaster... The best part about it was Roger from 2 was in it, and had a few (and I mean VERY FEW) funny random lines, but they made him smarter in this movie... well, sort of. And they managed to kill his character by making him less funny than in Open Season 2, which kind of ruined it for me.. Instead of having a funny line every 10 minutes, he'd spend 5 minutes repeating the same line over and over. By the 5th or 6th time I heard him say "ooooh, meat snacks!" I had facepalmed so hard my neighbor could feel it. Aside from that, the story sucked, the animation was horrible (very cheap and last minute looking) and the whole thing felt like it was thrown together in an hour. It wasn't funny either. It ruined the trilogy for me. Save yourself the torture and don't watch this garbage. Stick with 1 and 2. If you watch this one I promise it will ruin the series for you...

now excuse me while I go wash my eyes out with acid...

Brothers (I) (2009)
10/10
best drama of 2009
19 January 2010
I chose to review this one first because I was so impressed after seeing it that I just had to. Now, this movie is a lot like A Perfect Getaway, in the sense that the trailer made it look a lot more like an action movie than it really was simply by showing the movie's final and best moments. However, that is no excuse not to see it, as it is one of the highlights of 2009. Many people have stated that 2009 has been the best year for movies we have had in a long time. And movies like Brothers, Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, Saw VI, Gamer and Law Abiding Citizen prove that.

In the movie Sam (played by Tobey McGuire) is a marine home for awhile, who bails his good for nothing brother Tommy (Jake Gylenhall) out of jail. But when Sam's helicopter gets shot down in Afghanistan and he is captured and presumed dead Tommy steps in and plays the role of the man of the house. You can see where this is going...

I loved Tobey in this movie as in every other movie he has always played the proper, nerdy kid, now he's playing the kick *** marine with anger issues. Tobey stated in an interview with Connan O'Brian "I got so mad in that movie, that i actually scared myself when i went back to watch it." and it's true. Tobey did a wonderful job and played the role of the pi**** off husband with flying colors. Jake also plays a great role and does his part nicely in the movie, playing a guy who's trying to set his life straight and stepping in to take care of his brother's kids when daddy can't be there. You'll find yourself wanting to take the side of one brother over the other but will be unable to due to the fact that both brothers have an equal amount of pros and cons that make them both just as likable or dis-likable throughout the entire movie. you will also feel sorry for both of them at many points.

the thing i liked best about this movie was that it was 100% realistic. Nowadays you'll find so many movies that have realistic plots and ideas but the action is so far fetched. In this movie, every little thing down to the family dinner with 3 conversations going on at once during the youngest daughter's birthday is extremely realistic. If you haven't seen Brothers, you should, it is the best drama/suspense movie of the year.

Michael Bay Presents: Explosions! Explosions! Explosions!
17 November 2009
I have reviewed this movie and Orphan before, but with new fans of my reviews and a change of time I feel it necessary to re-review. so, Transformers 2, oh I'm sorry, Transformers Revenge of the fallen, or TROTF for short. take off the first T and we have ROTF. which is close to Rolf which can be said as Ralph, so I'm just going to call this movie Transforming Ralph cuz it sounds cool, and if I had a dog named Ralph who could transform that'd be cool too. anyways, Transforming Ralph is a movie that inspires kids not to do drug-- no wait... it makes u wanna murder yur mother in la-- dammit... ah! here we go. *ahem* Transforming Ralph is a movie that will catch you by the throat at the very beginning and not let go until the end. constant explosions, action, drama, and a deep story/plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire movie. with he return of favorites such as Bumblebee and Irnohide, and the introduction of new (and just as lovable) characters such as the Twins (Skids and Mudflap) and Sideswipe. The movie features a more in depth intense plot this time around with a non-stop action packed thrill ride that leaves you almost breathless. it's a like if you hooked up an IV full of Mountain Dew to a diabetic monkey with ADHD. and it's not just the action, no no. the jokes. many scenes contain the "smart ass" humor of 2009 mixed with hidden sexual innuendos to make it more relateable to the teenage community and not just the 140-something year olds who grew up with the cartoon. overall, this was the BEST action movie of 2009, hands down. my rating: 10/10

Nothing's Funny, Unless it's Random
13 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
And that's exactly what this movie does! Random humor thrown all over the place! A lot of teens nowadays (including myself) usually laugh at the out-of-nowhere, unexpected, random phrases that usually don't make sense or have a meaning. Some examples in this movie (here's where the spoilers come in) are: When Shake first introduces the Insanoflex to Metwad and he says "Behold, the Insanoflex." Metwad sees all the clothes it's covered in and responds "Behold my Elvis costume! I ain't seen this since last Halloween." Another example is when Shake is giving Metwad sex-ed and he draws a picture while explaining exposed crotches and Metwad asks "And them there is the exposed crotches?" and Shake responds "I told you already, that's the chair and the spatula." which really makes this scene random because he never actually said anything about a chair or spatula until just then. I give this movie a good rating not for plot, storyline, animation, dialog, action, drama, humor, or creativity but for just being itself.
