Nice series - got me to read the books
20 April 2024
This is a good solid TV show that's a step above the 1970's detective shows that I grew up on, and it's a nice divertissement after a day of work and fighting traffic. I was intrigued enough to start reading the books, and they are also quite entertaining. I like the little tweaks that the series writers made to the book's characters (Robin Weigert is perfect as Teddy!). I hope they go further into Colter's backstory, which would be a season in itself. And yes, the idea of traveling the country, unfettered, in an Airstream is VERY appealing! I'd prefer to see the actual locations of each episode, but Canada is an acceptable substitute.

Seemed familiar, LOL...

Warning: Spoilers
I thoroughly enjoyed the episode, especially as it progressed and I started seeing hints of "Psycho," which was released the year before this episode - I mean, same house and everything. This episode dealt with some pretty modern subjects. Very cool!

Well written from a woman's standpoint

Vera Miles brings reality (somewhat sanitized but this IS the late 50's/early 60's) to the sad and pointless life of the working girls in the Old West. I appreciated the writing in this episode.

Kind of fun watching this after surviving 2020

After being basically in isolation for most of the year to avoid getting COVID-19, this movie seems quite plausible, and even somewhat attractive! Great story line! And who can go wrong with Bruce Willis?

Entertaining

LOL, slowest moving tornado I've ever seen, and I live in North Texas where we see the real thing. However, I still love the series so 7 stars for a good story and good acting.

I don't agree with the negative reviews of this movie

Well, okay, maybe the one about continuity -- I had a hard time following the time line of how long Ribisi's character was in Cuba each time ("returning on Tuesday" seemed awfully short compared to everything that happened while he was in Cuba), but I'll overlook that in favor of the story and the excellent acting by the cast. I feel that Adrian Sparks portrayed Papa in all of his flawed, tortured glory without going over the top. The audience senses the churning volcano beneath the surface that occasionally bursts forth. After reading "Hemingway in Love" this past winter, I had a greater depth of understanding for the unresolved guilt and regret that Papa carried in his later years. Joely Richardson was perfect as Mary, a woman who actually had a very interesting life all on her own but who was perpetually in the shadow of the great man. Giovanni Ribisi played his role quite well -- any woodenness belonged to the character and his repressed feelings of abandonment, not to the actor's characterization. Loved the movie, and now must read the book!

Absolutely brilliant

First, I read the book and loved it. Then I heard that James Franco was going to star in the mini-series and I thought, "James Franco as Jake??? NO WAY!" and got depressed. The film crew did their Dallas thing and blocked traffic during business hours for about a week last October, which bummed out all of us who actually WORK in downtown Dallas. Plus, my building was too far away for me to see anything. However, I invested in a Hulu Plus account so I could watch the series and entered Episode 1 with skepticism.

After five minutes I was hooked. By the end of Episode 2, James Franco WAS Jake and I couldn't imagine anyone else playing that character. I can't say enough good things about this series. Where the series deviated from the book (and I took exception to a couple of things), it was usually to facilitate condensing a 700-page book into 10 1-hour episodes and keep the storyline going.

However, Gary Oldman's performance as Lee Harvey Oswald is still the best!
