A Russian Fairytale (2013)
An intimate documentary about runaways after the collapse of the USSR
"Perm, Russia, population 1 million'
Stark - well filmed and shocking personal stories. It reminded me of Charles Dickens England, only that story was fictional. Raises many questions. Has the fall of the Soviet Union been better or worse for the average Russian?
Is this an unpleasant reality which accompanies capitalism?
It turns out a character in the film is a pimp/boss - an ultimate 'capitalist', deriving his livelihood by living off his 'workers' and not giving anything back or leading the way to a better life... He lived this life by choice. The others didn't have a choice.
My heart was wrung out for them. very powerful.
Empire of the Sun (1987)
terrible seeing it again
This was my favorite film as a kid, from the age of about 5-9 I would watch it every Christmas, and i thought it was amazing, the music, seeing the war, the death, people dying, people get shot, every little detail in this film stayed with me, and I could remember everything. I loved being scared by this film, and being so sad by the music, and parts where certain characters die, such as the part where the kamikaze soldier offers James a peach, then as he's about to cut it with his samurai sword, gets shot in the throat, and you see the blood spill down onto the peach, this was all amazing stuff for me, seriously.... HOWEVER I decided to watch the film again for the first time in about 11 years, i'm 20 now, and from beginning to end I was SHOCKED at how bad this film is... everything is cliched, the acting and script is rubbish, the shots aren't special, everything I remembered as special is cheesey and just ridiculous!! I will no longer recommend this film to anyone, apart from parents who have kids 5-9, if their children have an imagination like I did then they will probably find this film special too, it made me grow up a bit a learn some important things in life. PS. (I also thought James was the coolest kid in the world) hahaha I can't believe that now!
Total Reality (1997)
only if you can't really sleep...
don't buy this film for comedy value like I did, I didnt find it one bit funny, but so f****** miserable and lame it's unbelievable. I gave it to a friend for christmas which was pretty funny (on my side) I recently heard that he watched it and told me what an a**ehole I am!
There is nothing more frustrating than watching an over-lit, over dramatic, poorly scored scene in which the camera is sat there on a tripod and doesn't move... the film work is truely pathetic, and I can only say DONT WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!
Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
Advice...
If you haven't seen this film yet, save yourself 2 hours...watch the trailer! The 'best' bits are all jammed in there.
Personally I think the whole thing is ridiculous, and it annoys me that Hollywood producers these days put no effort into these mindless productions, which are obviously motivated only by money, and not art or originality (which the 1st one had).
The whole thing is past it's sell-by date, and stinks. If you do decide to rent, or buy this, then be prepared for a mind-numbing experience.
The end.
Rang-e khoda (1999)
Stunning, beautiful, I highly recommend this film
******* ******* SPOILER ALERT ******* *******
I first saw this film in the cinema, and I came out feeling amazed!
It's a refreshing look a life many of us are blind to.
The countryside in Iran is breathtaking, I could watch a film just showing scenes of Iranian countryside!:-) This film is about a blind boy who just wants to be with his family.
He is very lonely and quiet whilst in his city school, but as soon as he is home we see his true character, a very playful, happy child.
However, his father is not happy, he is very depressed and feels like the blind boy is a curse, throughout the film, we see the father getting more and more depressed, and the film cleverly shows the viewer his wish for the boy to disappear. When the boy has an accident, the father at first feels free, and does not want to save him, but his emotions build up, and he has to save his son...Once they are together again, the father thinks his son is dead, and feels very guilty and remorseful...however, we see the boy awaken and consider this a blessing from god...The boy means everything to the father...
This film is very emotional, and very spiritual. It makes you want to appreciate life, and appreciate our eyesight.
I HIGHLY recommend this film to every one of all ages; it's a rare treat.
