He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983)
A way of life!
HE-MAN, AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE was a great cartoon show for young kids. I was one of those kids, and He-Man gave me a goal. I wanted to be just like He-Man. Have his good judgment. His inner strength, perhaps his athletic ability. I have not seen an episode of this show or its sister show SHE-RA, PRINCESS OF POWER, in a long long time. It has come to my understanding that the Cartoon Network was asked to run the show, but the show was rudely objected by the network, and they are currently working to air on the Hallmark Channel. These shows need to be re-aired so that young children of today and tomorrow can have positive roll-models. He-Man had everything to inspire a child. It had good family value and a great sense of teamwork. Clear cut heroes and villians. The powers of good and evil. How one man with the help of his friends can stand up to the forces of the evil Skeletor. The technology made me want to be able to go through the air and learn about computers and other technologies. If possible, find yourself an episode of He-Man or even She-Ra and have your children watch it!! He-Man v.s. Skeletor (good v.s. evil)
Road to Bali (1952)
Delightful
This movie introduced me to the entire "Road to" series. This movie shows how movie chemistry never dies. In their sixth film together, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour show the fun and happiness of making films could be. They were friends and the audience can surely see that. Being the only movie in color makes the elaborate scenery come to life. The jokes are similar to the earlier films, but they are still funny. Do yourself a favor and buy this movie, it's worth it.
House of Frankenstein (1944)
Good movie overall
This movie has everything that Universal could stuff into it. I think that it was too much. Karloff is always a nice touch to any horror film. The addition of Chaney's Wolfman is another good addition. Still, the movie is called HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN. The F. Monster doesn't even appear til 45 minutes into the film. The Monster doesn't even terrorize a village. He is dormant til the last 5 minutes. I personally detest the depiction of Dracula in this film. He is brought back to life and submits to the power of a mortal. Then he runs like a coward to away from guns. Guns shouldn't hold him.
Though all of my comments have been complaints, this movie has a great deal of appeal and action, with a little bit of a love story thrown in. Good movie overall.
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943)
Too Early
This movie was made too early, in my opinion. If you look at all the Universal monsters, you will find that all of them had a film series of their own. Lon Chaney's "Wolfman" is the only monster without a series of his own films. They were so eager to combine the monsters in the films that Chaney's Wolfman was never given the prestige that the others received. "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman", is the sequel to "The Wolfman", unlike the following sequels, the movie does concentrate on Lawrence Talbot(Chaney). A bit of trivia that I have learned, is that Talbot was supposed to have a conversation with the Frankenstein monster. This would have been a result from "Ghost of Frankenstein" when Ygor's mind was tranferred to the monster. This would have made the movie more interesting. Though my earlier comments seem negative, I would like to state that this is my favorite movie concerning the Wolfman. Chaney, like always makes you feel sorry for Talbot and his curse of damnation. Talbot is the first man ever in the Universal horror films to befriend the creature. For anyone whom likes to sit down and watch a vintage horror film, you absolutely MUST see this one.
The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942)
SAD
This movie takes everything that the Monster once had away. Does anyone remember the way the monster was in BRIDE...? The Monster barely had anything left in Son of..., that's why Karloff left. Lon Chaney does do a good Frankenstein monster. He mouths Ygor's voice precise and enthusiastically. Still, the movie lacks the full "Universal Horror" feeling of the three earlier films. The movie is quick paced and take place mostly in the day, and bright lights. Though a good classic film, this movie seems like it was made just to be made, not for the quality that could have been put into the film. Bela Lugosi, returns as the imfamous Ygor, minus the sharp teeth from Son of..., and Lon Chaney assuming the role of the Monster, in the final film that the monster would be the only monster in. No wolfman, vampire or mad scientist. This movie is simply, in terms of quality, SAD!
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Superb
This movie is the best of the Frankenstein movies by far. I had the opportunity to watch this on a giant screen with a huge sound system. Since then watching it on TV has never been the same. I have so much more respect for this film. I saw why people became scared of it.
The monster appears close to the beginning and the action starts From there. The movies following this one barely live up to this one and the original. Colin Clive returning as Dr. F and the addition of Ernest Thesiger as Dr. P make this movie creepy and suspenseful. Karloff brings feeling to the monster and makes you feel sorry that he is alone. Elsa Lanchester as Mary Shelly and the monster's mate, brings that little extra class to the movie. SEE THIS MOVIE.
