Lioness (2023)
Bad.
The writing is a disarray of overused tropes, and the attempt at poetic speeches feels insincere. The main character possesses an astonishing physical prowess - one wonders if her time flipping burgers and engaging in domestic disputes served as the secret to her exceptional abilities.
You'll notice that the glowing endorsements with perfect 10s and patriotic accolades curiously lack any mention of the show's actual merits.
While some might find it an intriguing train wreck to continue watching, for most, this show is best avoided in favour of more credible and worthwhile narratives featuring strong female roles.
Hijack (2023)
Promising Start, Missed Potential
Starting off with promising acting and tension, "Hijack" unfortunately falls short in developing its characters, leaving the audience struggling to connect with any of them. However, Idris Elba's presence certainly adds value to the show.
Regrettably, most characters' actions throughout the series are often unrealistic, making it difficult to like or invest in the overall plot. One standout issue is with the character Jamie (played by Aimée Kelly), whose terrible dialogue significantly hampers the show's mood.
Despite these flaws, "Hijack" might still appeal to viewers who prefer not to focus on the finer details and simply want to enjoy the action. However, by the time I reached episode 6, I found the shortcomings became too much to overlook.
Blindspot (2023)
Calling all brave masochists: brace yourselves for a painful viewing experience
Prepare yourself for a catastrophic collision of terrible storytelling, abysmal acting, and mind-numbingly poor production values. Blindspot is a prime example of how not to create compelling television.
The script, if it can be called that, is a testament to the dangers of letting children loose with a keyboard. It's riddled with nonsensical plot holes, laughable dialogue, and a complete lack of coherence. As characters stumble through poorly constructed scenes, one can't help but wonder if the writers were actively aiming for unintentional comedy. Plot threads are left hanging, character backstories are left unexplored, and the storyline limps towards an unsatisfying conclusion. It's as if the creators lost interest and decided to leave viewers stranded in a narrative wasteland.
North Shore (2023)
A Cliched Crime Drama that Misses the Mark
"North Shore" attempts to deliver a gripping murder mystery set against Sydney's iconic North Shore but falls short in almost every aspect. The over-polished production lacks believability and is plagued by cliches that undermine its potential.
The writing is burdened with tired cliches, including the predictable Australian detective versus British detective dynamic and stereotypical character portrayals. The dialogue feels forced and fails to create genuine emotional connections, particularly in the interactions between the grieving parents.
In summary, a disappointingly cliched crime drama that lacks originality and realism. Its contrived plot-lines and wooden dialogue make it an underwhelming addition to the genre.
