Garden State (2004)
Wonderful gem hidden in the Garden State
This is a movie about youth, about the past memories, it's about how growing up can be difficult. It's about searching your own identity when compared to others and finding yourself and who you are in the path of life. It's about being different than the others; and still finding yourself and a satisfying path to walk in life. It's about being sometimes odd and weird but still being accepted and lovable. It's about finding the lost connections and friends of childhood and reviving and reliving those connections. It's about seeing how different roads life can take each one of us once we hit the adulthood, and how everyone makes their own decisions. It's about painful memories of the past and gaining acceptance and peace with them. It's all about life itself, sometimes difficult and bittersweet, but also having undeniably beautiful moments in it.
I am one of those who would fit to the life timeline of the main characters in the movie. Although I don't live in the States so although some of it is different (no drug or excess alcohol use here among young people), this movie reminded me of my youth. I grew to adulthood in early half of 2000's and I could find myself in these characters in broader sense. How beautiful depiction of the stories of these characters.
Excellent performances by the main actors/actress. Especially Peter Sarsgaard is excellent in his role in this movie, I've grown a huge fan of his work. I would definitely recommend to see this movie. There's a wonderful gem hidden in the Garden State.
The Sound of Silence (2019)
Subtle but powerful

This is very different kind of a movie, but very interesting and I could recommend it especially for musicians, composers, sound technicians etc who work with music and/or sounds somehow. In the main role isn't cinematography with all the tricks it can do; this movie is slow-paced and dark; even the lighting in the end is extremely dark; you barely can see the characters in the ending. In the main role there is music and the sounds that are heard by Peter Sarsgaards character in all of it (also named Peter).
About the ending; I felt the plot a little bit of lacking considering the female character's role. There wasn't a clear romance, even if there was it wasn't clearly shown. We find the character's standing outside, and Peter can hear the major chord again. They look each other in the eyes. What is supposed to happen after the final cut, we don't know. Are they about to kiss or embrace each other?
But the music heard just before the ending definitely is there to mean something, as the soprano sings Camille Saint-Saën's theme from "Le Cygne". It's dark but beautiful. As Le Cygne is heard, we are seen Peter's character walking toward's Ellen's place in rain. We aren't clearly given the reason why he goes there - yes she called him but didn't ask him to come over - but the Le Cygne's theme is a hint for that.
It's dark, weird, beautiful, different, unusual and lovely movie.
Flightplan (2005)
What an exciting thriller!
As someone not particularly fan of thriller genre in general, I found this movie very interesting and exciting movie to watch, an excellent thriller that keeps you hooked to the end! I definitely recommend to watch it. It's 10/10 stars from me.
Jodie Foster give excellent performance in her role, as does Peter Sarsgaard. Sarsgaard is an excellent actor that definitely should have more leading roles. Never would I have guessed how the ending goes - the movie doesn't give too much information too soon, so you will be as flabbergasted as Jodie's character in the film, what on earth has happened!
Plot is complicated, there are some very minor problems in it considering how believable it is to a little girl go missing without no one noticing, but it is convincing enough that it could indeed happen.
What a super thriller by these stars. Huge recommendation!!
Robin Hood (2010)
Best movie of Robin Hood
I'm writing this review to give another opinion of this movie.
Yes, I agree with former reviewers, that this is very different, and dark take on the Robin Hood's tale.
Yes, I agree that there are plot inaccuracies that troubled me; Robin playing as a knight and no one noticing it; and the children boys coming to the beach to fight with armed, trained French soldiers, and survive from that. Common sense says that's not possible.
I agree that these things should be taken care of; Ridley Scott usually does remarkable job with his films.
However, there's something in this film that I keep going watching it again and again. For me, someone who loves the tale of Robin Hood, this is the best movie so far made about him. Costner's take is fine, but this is far more better. Seen the other movies, wasn't impressed. Fight scenes are massive and perhaps too much of them. There is chemistry with Crove and Blanchett.
Yes, I'd like to have seen more of "Robin Hood and his merry men". That's an angle they probably intended to give in the sequel, which never came.
L.A. Confidential (1997)
It would have earned the sequel
Did the makers of L. A. Confidential knew what they had in their hands? Anyone who made movies in the 90's, probably knew what they were doing at the time but this is just way too good to be considered only "90's movie", it's more than that. It's excellent still today, 2023. It doesn't get old. What a king of thrillers and police/detective movies. The main characters give such a performance you don't see that very often. Russell Crowe's Bud White and Basinger's Lynn love story that captured me to watch this movie again and again.
This movie captures something from the 50's, film noir, the characters, the music. It's a timeless classic everyone should watch.
This is just one of the best movies ever made.
Rough Magic (1995)
Definitely an undiscovered gem.
This movie mixes enough of different elements to make it interesting; mainly magical realism and film noir, the 50's, Latin America. It is not perfect film, but it is a worth of one's time to watch. If you like Russell Crowe, this is a must see film. As always, Crowe is excellent in any movie he's in. His depiction of Alex (Ross) very subtly conveying his feelings to Myra is delightful to watch.
This was surprisingly refreshing a movie, while blurring with the lines of what is real and what is magic.
*** Spoilers ****
Interestingly, while first being very suspicious of Alex's motives of wanting to be in her company, Myra's attitude chances towards Ross after the magic potion has taken the effect in her. Another interesting story plot was about she losing her heart and gaining it back again.
