The Alleys (2021)
A fun rollercoaster ride..
Engaging, atmospheric, enjoyable movie. A bit cringe as every lie, sin or intrigue gives rise to worse consequences.... Just enough over the top to bring out the humor and a bit of distance to mitigate some of the violence... But in the end I cared about the characters and thought it was wonderfully acted and directed with an ensemble cast.
Hanadi (Maisa Abd Elhadi) who plays the gangster's right hand woman rises to the occasion and is very powerful and riveting.
Would love to see her do more.
The multiple interwoven storylines were balanced artfully by director Bassel Ghandour.
I'm gonna go watch his Theeb, soon.
Vayehi Boker (2021)
Pays off slowly but beautifully
The characters grow on you over the course of the movie, so by the end you really feel the connection. Complex and ambiguous.. Acting is excellent. Well worth watching.
Bulworth (1998)
Sort of predicted Trump and Bernie
Doesn't date well but fascinating to see how the populist straight talking message can be applied to both the left and the right. Patrick Caddell who collaborated with Beatty on this and served as a political consultant to Carter originally, took his anti establishment views and ultimately switched allegiances to the Bannon wing of the Trump supporters. The evening after his first Consultation with Trump was when Trump came out swinging and declared the media the enemy. Art and life are strange.
