Close (2022)
Realistic, important, heartbreaking
What I didn't like:
The film was mostly about grief (and shame?). It really didn't bring much new stuff after the plot twist. Also, something was missing from the end.
What I liked:
Actors were phenomenal.
The film and especially the tension and communication between the characters was excellent
It was beautiful. The symbolism of the flowers as well as the mother working as a nurse bringing new lives to the earth. The scenes were colourful and beautiful.
Most important thing was the topic and the problem. As a guy who has had close friendships with other guys, can definitely relate. It is interesting, how people note instantly if you are not stereotypically masculine.
120 battements par minute (2017)
Heartbreaking but really good
Holy hell, this was good! I am an adult heterosexual guy, but I may or may not have dropped a tear or two watching this. Very emotional, touching and powerful. A perfect movie is one that is entertaining, funny once in a while, then sad, but over all: IT SENDS A MESSAGE.
In the beginning I tought: "Should people really do this kind of activism? Is it okay to use these things (red paint on walls and so on). Close to the end of the movie, however, they let me see the pain. They let me see, what it really is like to lose someone you love just because of lazy and prejudiced politics. At the end I was like: "Go activists. Do whatever you want".
Les combattants (2014)
Funny, entertaining and serious at the same time
I usually hate romantic comedies, but I love French films. This is another great one! It is not a typical romance, where there is a strong, independet and fearless man who seduces a traditionally feminine girl. Here, the girl is the masculine one with most understanding of survival and the boy is the one with a kind and peaceful soul. In the movie, there are enough funny moments like the ferret for instance. The army story is fun and immersive. It's kinda road movie to be honest. Then, there are very emotional and beautiful moments, like where he eventually saves the girl and the scene at the river. I love, how this rough army girl falls in love with a kind and peaceful young man.
The only scene, though important, that I didn't like was the fox scene. Feel bad for the fox and kinda sick. Who would eat a fox, especially when it has rabies? (I don't remember if it did).
TLDR: Still a better love story than Twilight ;)
Poor fox, tho :(
The Tree of Life (2011)
So deep that it became frivolous
The film was too long and eventhough I love artistic and sometimes even experimental movies, this just didn't do it for me. I didn't even get what it was about. The movie did well because of Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain.
Even if there was an original thesis and idea behind the movie (which is obviously essential for a palm d'Or film) it was not clear.
There was a little bit too much of everything. Yes, a movie that describes time and life is ought to bring up the evolution, but it feels like the long amount of time spent observing marine life and space was actually waste of time. It looked like something you would see in an electronical device's commercial: "Look how much money we put in these amazing colours and endless shapes!".
I guess the story could have been told in a more of a simplified way. That's how it could have served its purpose and told the viewer how the director/writer actually sees the world and the society.
+The ending was cheesy as hell.
Les héros ne meurent jamais (2019)
Underrated. Much better than some Palm d'Or winners!
This film is very good becose it has everything that a movie needs: Entertaining story, funny at times, and then the glimpse into the awful war that really happened and destroyed many lifes. At first, the viewer thinks: "A guy who is a reincarnated soldier, how cool!". Then, the harsh truth appears. The characters are just French tourists making up stories not realizing, how this awful thing really affected innocent people.
I especially like the dialogue near the end. The one where Alice tells Joachim about love. In a way she tells, how she wanted to be with him after all. I think there was something more than platonic love on her side. Adéle Haenel's performance is great as always.
At the end there was still some things that left me wondering: Did he make it all up? Why did she do all this? What did she do in the beginning? Sometimes the pace was a bit too slow, but over all a great movie!!!
Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019)
Beautiful and touching
This is probably my favourite or second-favourite movie, and I am a 40-year-old guy.
Story: Beautiful and deep
Acting: awesome
Cinematography: delicious
Pace: a bit slow, but mostly it serves the purpose (wouldn't be the same beautiful piece of art with a faster pace)
Ending is pure gold.
Somebody described this movie as "a classic love story with a modern soul". This is a good description. Two women in love and a cast of almost 90% females is something we are not used to seeing. Nowadays, characters (as well as protagonists, speaking roles and named characters) are ~70% male.
It is a visually and emotionally pleasing movie but also points out things about our society that still need fixing.
