Diana (2021)
Plan 9 bad
It's a musical train wreck. 2 hours of teeth gritting, cringe worthy, eye rolling baaaad. I wonder what the pitch was when this was in the planning stage. "Let's dig up Diana's corpse and dance it across the stage to bad music." We were all in front row seats as the dumpster fire that was Charles and Diana's marriage imploded. Why would they think it was a grand idea to replay it on stage, and to music yet. The actors did their best with the material they were given. They seemed enthusiastic but you can't make a silk purse out of this sow's ear. There's no fairy tale ending here, just as it was with the real Diana.
Tribunal Justice (2023)
Dial it back Mr. Levy
Having worked for the court, I know how civil cases can play out. These three people are NOT judges. They are arbitrators. Levy needs to dial back the attitude. He has one trait that is just as annoying as his mother. Not looking at the litigant when he is unleashing his vitriol. His eyes trail back and forth as he's "lecturing" a litigant or litigants on what a piece of crap he thinks they are. I do like the discussion about the merits of the case. It's more informative than the browbeating that went on earlier. The program is interesting in a reality show kind of way, but it has little to do with the actual goings on in a court of law.
Susan Slept Here (1954)
"Interesting" premise
Soooo, let me wrap my mind around this...a 17 year old girl is left in the custody of a 35 year old single man on Christmas Eve by 2 cops. After a couple of days he is advised to marry the 17 year old girl, which he does. She refuses to sign the annulment papers. He stays away for a while, then he comes back because he thinks she's pregnant by Virgil. He punches Virgil then leaves again. Susan dresses up, he returns and they consummate the marriage. Cute. The dialog is cute and snappy and garners laughs. But oh that premise. Debbie Reynolds sparkles William Powell is charming, and the supporting cast is more than set dressing. But oh that premise. This movie would be charming if it weren't for that foundation of creepiness.
Secrets of Playboy (2022)
Applying makeup is hard?????
I don't doubt the playboy lifestyle was damaging to some of the women. But when one of the women (Zoe) in season 2 episode 2 "The era of the Seven"complained doing her own makeup was hard made me roll my eyes so far back I saw my own brain. The other cringworthy scene was when Izabelle stated she never took the bar after going through law school and earning her J. D. made me want to reach through the screen and shake her. What a waste of an education. They traded on their beauty, and received $1,000 per week salary, a roof over their head, clothing and plastic surgery bought and paid for. SMDH.
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)
Wonderful and thought provoking
Positives: Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy (in his last role), Sidney Poitier and a great supporting cast.
Negative: Katharine Houghton.
This movie is well written for it's time. It played in a time in the US pre Loving v Virginia. It's funny in places, dramatic in places and makes the viewer think.
The weak point is Katharine Houghton. She knows her lines and delivers them on cue, but is obviously out of her depth in a movie full of amazingly talented actors.
It would have been a much better movie with a more experienced actor in the role. She flits through the movie delivering her lines overly enthusiatically. This time nepotism doesn't work.
The Goldbergs (2013)
The best part of every episode...
...are the last 5 minutes because that's when the character dialog is real. The first 25 minutes are painful and cringeworthy. Especially Barry. He looks like a terrier overdosed on caffeine. I'm not sure what the writers are thinking (or maybe they're not) by making him so incredibly unlikeably self absorbed and manic. I've read that the show was better early on, maybe it was, but it's torture to watch now. The characters aren't believable and drift toward cartoonish. The plots, what there are of them, are the product of lazy writing. And before I get hit with why are you watching it? I'm not anymore.
