Barry: Chapter Two: Use It (2018)
Season 1, Episode 2
8/10
getting funnier
5 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This second episode didn't disappoint. It lets the show have a perfect amount of room for its tone and comedy. The teeth filing scene brought perfect tension to an episode filled with gags.

I'm fully invested in the characters and their plot lines. It was interesting to see how Ryan's death affected everyone and Barry attempting the priest monologue was hilarious. My favourite characters so far are Barry and Noho Hank, they both provide good comedy to the show and in Barry's case, aren't afraid to show a more emotional and mature side.

Overall, stronger than the first, especially in terms of comedy 8.4/10.

Unique

This has gotta be one of the most interesting premises for a comedy I've ever heard. Like how on earth do you think of something like this.

To start with, the plot kicks off well and is pretty riveting straight away. There are memorable characters, which is a classic for HBO. It's dark tone and sense of humour make it for me. The suspense also lets the episode have another layer on top of its already brilliant structure. Bill Hader did an extremely good job on this one and I hope to see it get better and better. It has a lot of potential and it could go literally anywhere.

Overall, great plot and characters 8.2/10.

Let It Out
14 February 2024
This was the third starkid musical I watched and unlike twisted before it, it didn't instantly hook me. As I'm normally a fan of starkid's parody, it surprised me that they could hold the standard with an original production.

To start with, the premise is brilliant, a zombie apocalypse but it makes them sing instead?! Just pure genius. It is enough to sell the show even to someone who doesn't like starkid. The story is riveting, with interesting characters and a chilling horror undertone(If you think about the implications).

Right from the opening number it hooks you in with extremely catchy numbers composed by Jeff Blim, who will remain one of my favourite members of starkid. It holds to the extremely high bar it sets for itself all the way to the end with 'Let it out' and 'Inevitable' being two of the best starkid songs. Also, not to forget Robert Manion's incredible performance in 'show stopping number'.

The cast are clearly having an amazing time riffing off eachother and having fun with the show. Jon Matteson wowed me by going through most of the musical without singing and then absolutely smashing it at the end of the show. Lauren Lopez does a fantastic job as usual and delivers every line with an insane amount of charisma. Joey Richter showcases his amazing talent in this show and shines in all of his roles. Jeff Blim is on point as always with all of his characters and Mariah Rose Faith also came in and established herself as a fine addition to the starkid team.

Overall, the guy who didn't like musicals is a fantastic show and definitely is important for any starkid fan or musical fan to see: 9.4/10.

A Very Potter Musical (2009–2010)
10/10
That's in CANADA
12 February 2024
This was the first starkid show I ever watched and they quickly became my favourite theatre group. I have now enjoyed quite a few musicals from their catalogue and thought I would come back and review the one that started it all.

I watched a remastered version on youtube with upscaled visuals and improved audio. The music blew me away with how good it was and the singing and acting was refreshingly fun.

The cast clearly all have great chemistry with eachother and all seem like really good friends. Lauren Lopez' Draco Malfoy is always a highlight for me when i watch this show and Joe Moses' Snape never fails to get me cackling.

The story is a mix of multiple harry potter books and it works to great effect. It will always be iconic and the jokes never fail to make me laugh.

Overall, a show filled with nostalgia and passion: 9.2/10.

Masterpiece
12 February 2024
I started watching starkid with their harry potter spoof, A very potter musical, which I thought very highly of and thoroughly enjoyed. I then went on to twisted one evening and was immediately struck by its innate wit and great writing.

To start off with, the music is fantastic, from more upbeat numbers such as 'I steal everything' and 'take off your clothes'(both sung by the powerhouse Jeff Blim) to more deep and emotional numbers like 'Twisted', 'Happy Ending' and 'A thousand and one nights'. It incorporates elements of disney's song writing with starkid's intelligence.

The story is also riveting, being way better than the original aladdin in my opinion. All the characters are so well developed and provide so much comedy throughout the show.

Starkid also deliver yet again with their acting talent. With a phenomenal performance from Dylan Saunders as Ja'Far, to Jeff Blim's menacing Aladdin and Rachael Soglin's brilliant portrayal of the princess. And, of course, I can't say enough about Joe Walker's characters, especially the incredibly memorable prince achmed.

And, as if the cast, music and story wasn't enough, the comedy delivers on every front. From recurring jokes(some involving a tiger) to the Djinn at the tail end of the show, it kept me on the floor from start to finish.

Overall, one of my favourite musicals of all time and not only better than its source material but also better than Wicked, which many may compare it to.

Score:10/10.

Invincible: Here Goes Nothing (2021)
Season 1, Episode 2
9/10
S1E02-New characters, worldbuilding etc.
16 November 2023
This episode introduces us to some new characters which will be important for the show.

Atom Eve, Rex Splode, Robot and others. The character dynamic between Mark and Eve is great and I'm looking forward to see where they go with that plot line. Also, being a massive community fan, It's a pleasant surprise to see Gillian Jacobs as Eve, which improved my enjoyment of the episode.

The omni-man plotline has me extremely interested in why he killed the guardians and as the tension builds over the season, my intrigue will only continue to grow.

This episode overall isn't as strong as the first but still carries on the key plot lines and establishes new ones so it gets an 8.5 from me.

S1E01-New and exciting
15 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not normally the kind of guy to watch adult animation but this show caught my eye with its dark superhero theme and fun characters. I was encouraged by a friend to watch this a few years back but it fell into my back catalogue. Season 2 is currently airing so I figure this is a good time to hop on the bandwagon.

The first 40 minutes of this episode is pretty conventional superhero stuff. It reminded of the first spiderman film in 2002. The way the dialogue flowed felt like something out of the early MCU, enjoyably quippy but not to the point where it was annoying. But that ending was incredible, oh my god! The last 9 minutes end with a fight between omni-man and the guardians of the globe, which is one of the craziest and most gory superhero fights I've ever seen. The fight is extremely satisfying and comes out of almost nowhere.

What an episode-9.3/10.

Denial, Anger, Acceptance- Hooked
14 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Wow this episode was insane. The increasing tension between all of the characters, the haunting final scene, the brilliant acting performances, this episode really packs a punch.

In my last review, I mentioned that I didn't really know what this show was going to do with itself, but with this episode it is clear where they're going to go. Brendan's death is obviously going to set tension between all the characters and Christopher's mock execution at the end had me worried for a second.

This episode definitely marks the show finding it's groove, with no characters having plot armour and good mob drama.

Overall:8.8/10 MVP:James Gandolfini.

46 Long-Blending comedy and Drama
14 October 2023
Ok so this episode wasn't as good as the first. Since the first episode did so much it's almost like the show is already out of its starting phase so with this second episode, and I'm not sure why but I felt like a main plot should've been established. With some of my other favourite shows like Lost, the plot is established relatively quickly and it's fairly clear where the story is going. For The Sopranos, I currently have no idea what the main plot of this show will be, but I am hoping that it will quickly evolve into the show that people love so much.

But in terms of the actual episodes story, I thought this one was alright, Tony trying to sort out his mother's living situation and his struggles with happiness. Overall decent episode:8.2/10 MVP:James Gandolfini.

S1EO1- Exciting
7 October 2023
As a first time viewer of the sopranos, knowing nearly nothing about the show. This first episode is pretty good with a great performance from James Gandolfini. I'm not normally that into crime dramas but am interested to see what this show holds because of its insane critical acclaim. This episode lays some groundwork regarding Tony's mental state but doesn't get too much into the crime side of things. All in all, it's a good pilot which establishes the core characters but doesn't go that far below surface level in terms of plot and character. But it's a pilot so it's fine. I'm excited to see where this series goes and I hope to see series one build to a great climax.

Episode rating:8.45 MVP:James Gandolfini.

Torchwood: Greeks Bearing Gifts (2006)
Season 1, Episode 7
7/10
Greeks bearing gifts-Oh toby, oh toby
15 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Episode seven is an episode that focuses primarily on tosh, a character who otherwise hasn't been explored to this point. I've not got much to say about this episode but at the time some of the stuff with jack at the end being so pro-killing feels a bit weird and purposefully edgy and comes off as annoying. However, exploring tosh's loneliness in this episode and the burden of hearing other people's thoughts is a really great concept and I think that this episode gets in on greatness through its concept alone.

Overall, a nice episode which is brought down slightly by some edgy stuff for no reason.

7.5/10.

Countrycide-Torchwood does horror
15 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Very interesting episode here. This feels like a sort of low budget horror film and pretty much doesn't feel like torchwood at all. It pretty much serves no purpose within the show in terms of character development, apart from Ianto grieving slightly over lisa, characterwise this episode doesn't do much at all.

There are some poor moments here, such as the scene in the forest with Gwen and Owen, which I think is one of the weakest scenes in the whole season so far. It's trying so hard to be adult in the sense of just adding more sex and swearing. However, this episode also features some good moments, like the interrogation scene at the end.

A pretty decent horror episode that scares the life out of me. But in torchwood, the concept doesn't quite land and feels like it's from another show.

Ghost Machine-Nice and emotional story in early season one
15 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is a bit more of a different beast. Dealing with a more sensitive topic this time, it gets a bit more gritty. The story this time revolves around a device that shows people past events with the person forced to do nothing but watch. Owen stumbles across said device and is transported back to a rape under a bridge in the 1960s. Shocked, he goes to look up the case and finds that the man was never charged. He goes to hunt down the man and there is some great acting on show here from both characters in the scene. Burn Gorman really lets his acting skills shine in this episode and has some brilliant scenes here. Overall, a good episode with some great performances 8.3/10.

Everything changes-Nice and solid opener
15 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Now, I come from the side of this fandom that is doctor who and wasn't expecting torchwood series 1 and 2 to be very good. I had watched season 3 already and had not planned on watching the first two series'. However, after season 3 completely wowed me, I started to crave a bit more torchwood.

This episode is almost a trip back in time to the hit a sci-fi shows of the 2000s, starring a young, likeable, sexy cast of men and women. This first episode of Torchwood gives us a nice mystery around gwen cooper investigating the organisation. It has some moments that feel slightly out of place, such as the F-bomb in the first few minutes and some of the more over the top violence in the weevil scene but other than that it's a solid opener and holds promising things 8/10.

Warning: Spoilers
What a movie.

This movie delivers on every level. The cgi is the best we've seen from marvel in a long time and actually delivers some diverse locales for the characters to explore. It especially stands up to scrutiny compared to other recent marvel outings such as she hulk, wakanda forever and ant man and the wasp:quantumania.

The main gist of the story is that rocket is fatally injured at the start of the movie and the rest of the guardians need to save him. However, the person who genetically engineered him has implanted a kill switch whenever someone tries to heal him and the only thing that can break this switch is a pass key. This pass key can only be acquired from the people who engineered him which also turn out to be the main villains of the movie. Why this story works so well is because, for the first time in a long time, a marvel movie feels like it has stakes. It feels like any one of the guardians could die. Another thing which they have absolutely aced in this film is the villain. Chukwudi Iwuji is absolutely brilliant as the high evolutionary and didn't steal the show but as a new introduction to the franchise he did a fantastic job of keeping up chris pratt and bradley cooper. He had some really good moments, especially in the flashbacks, which is another field this movie absolutely excels in. The flashback sequences really really dig in to rocket's past and are guaranteed to get the waterworks flowing.

This was also the first marvel film in a while that didn't make me bored out of my mind while watching it. With Quantumania and Wakanda forever I found myself checking the time every so often and just couldn't get at all immersed in the world or experience. Whereas in Guardians vol.3 I found myself not wanting the movie to end. It is so refreshing to have a genuinely funny marvel movie as well. This trilogy practically started the mcu quipping and even now the same style that was introduced in the first guardians movie still is present here and brings plenty of laughs. It is miles better than the other comedy in the rest of the mcu because it was the guardians thing to begin with and this is their comedy at it's peak. Moments like chris pratt's 'get in the (word i can't say on imdb) car' demonstrate the guardians' dynamic at its absolute finest. The comedy also matches the tone. It's not the usual mcu job of interrupting serious moments just to make people laugh or cringe. Almost everything feels exactly how it should. A movie like endgame for example, is about half the world being gone, yet quite a lot of the movie is laughing at fat thor. It just doesn't go well with the tone. But in this movie, everything fits together nicely, you have your moments of happiness and witty banter, but also your solemn moments where some pretty deep and depressing things happen.

Now, let's take a minute to talk about the music in this movie. Oh my god, how did they get it so perfect! From the sullen opening with an acoustic version of radiohead's 'creep' to the amazing choice of 'no sleep till brooklyn' for one of the best marvel fight scenes. The Guardians fighting all together to the beastie boys is just something that's got to be experienced on the big screen. And if you stayed until post credits, you might have finally come and got your love, because the absolute classic by redbone rounds off the trilogy just as it began.

And finally moving on to the acting. The acting in this movie is phenomenal. Bradley cooper and Chris pratt just keep on coming with the jokes and heartfelt performances. Personally, I believe that Bradley cooper takes the cake here, bringing one of, if not my favourite mcu performance ever. I truly believe that this movie is the king of all marvel movies. This movie was so fun to watch and I would definitely recommend going to see it.

Bo Burnham: Inside (2021 TV Special)
10/10
Cinematic Masterpiece
14 April 2023
This is so close to being his best work however it is just beaten by make happy in my opinion. I think, however that there are things in this special which make it insanely difficult to put make happy above it. The cinematography in this film (yes, it's a film) is absolutely off the wall, the incredible use of lighting, camera angles, slow zooming in and more. This is by far his most beautiful special and it really makes you think about the pandemic that we all lived through. It also has some brilliant songs such as all eyes on me (grammy deserved for sure), look who's inside again, comedy, white woman's instagram and goodbye. It's an absolute masterpiece and a pleasure to watch. Overall, 9.5/10.

Bo Burnham: Make Happy (2016 TV Special)
10/10
The greatest comedy special ever made
14 April 2023
Now, I know what you're all thinking. "what about INSIDE". Well. In my book this tops Inside for a few reasons.

1. I prefer watching a live show.

2. I prefer the structure of Bo's live shows to Inside 3. I found this way funnier than inside which at times can feel extremely depressing.

4. It holds my favourite Bo Burnham songs and it is consistently incredible in quality.

This special holds significant sentiment for me because it was the one of the first things that I majorly connected with my dad over. I was obsessed with Bo Burnham at the time and I still am. So, as the greatest comedy special of all time, Make Happy did bring a tear to my eye and it is truly a masterpiece.

Cemented as One of the greats
14 April 2023
When I first saw 'what', I was expecting levels of brilliance which were on par with his previous special 'words words words'. Did it surpass my expectations? Indeed it did. There are many highlights to this daring, creative and catchy comedy special. When you watch this special, it truly gets ingrained in your mind. This has happened to me so much that I can do the entire opening segment by heart(not as good as Bo). Notable songs include, repeat stuff, from god's perspective, we think we know you, sad and left brain, right brain. This comedy special will keep you laughing and have you talking about it for a long time. Overall, 9.2/10.

Underrated
14 April 2023
Probably the least thought-provoking Bo Burnham special, however it's also the one that made me laugh the most. We have some absolute gems in the special such as: Words Words Words and Oh Bo on piano. Men and Women on guitar and Rant(prerecorded).

There is also some great stand up here, way better than his other shows. Personally I believe that Words Words Words is extremely underrated. It's not my favourite Bo Burnham special, however it is a great use of an hour if you want some good laughs and great songs. The most unexpected part of the special was where he left after Oh Bo and then returned to play two classics (I'm bo Yo and Love is) . Overall it's a solid 8.8/10 from me.

Better than I expected
13 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Now, when I saw that they were making a dungeons and dragons movie,I was pretty skeptical(cue reviews of previous dnd movies). However, when I went to see this movie, I wasn't expecting much, I was expecting the sludge of the recent years to be reproduced here. But, I was pleasantly surprised by the films overall decent performances, a plot that was simplistic and predictable, yet enjoyable. Chris Pine and Hugh Grant were the best performances of the movie and I thought that while cringe at times, the supporting cast were fun too watch. I'd describe it as Guardians of the Galaxy but it's DnD. I would rate it 7.9/10 and would recommend that you go and see it with some friends.
