Let The Right One In *****
20 April 2009
I'm sure my readers will appreciate that I rarely give a movie more than 3 stars, and this is only the 4th time in my blogging career that I have given 5 stars, so I'm sure that you will understand that this movie must be some great revolution in the history of movie making... in fact, I would venture to say it is very nearly the "perfect" movie...

It was with great anticipation that I went to view this movie, after reading that nearly every reputable movie magazine gave it a 5 star rating... I knew for certain that I was in for something amazing!

I had to travel a little way as my home cinema wasn't showing it, but it was well worth it, and I would recommend it to all of my readers, even if you aren't a fan of the Vampire genre!

***Synopsis***

Oskar, a bullied 12-year old, dreams of revenge. He falls in love with Eli, a peculiar girl. She can't stand the sun or food and to come into a room she needs to be invited. Eli gives Oskar the strength to hit back but when he realises that Eli needs to drink other people's blood to live he's faced with a choice. How much can love forgive? Let The Right One In is a story both violent and highly romantic, set in the Stockholm suburb of Blackeberg in 1982.

Written by John Nordling, Producer

Starring: Kåre Hedebrant, and Lina Leandersson

Directed by: Tomas Alfredson

***Fantasy Take***

Excellent fantasy movie, yet not too weird as to alienate the average viewer...

***Storyline: 5 Stars***

Brilliant story, based in a perfect fairy-tale style, simple and easy to follow, yet leaving you as if you had had the most filling meal in your life!

***Graphics: 4 Stars***

Hey, it's not really that kind of movie, but for what it is, the graphics certainly do what's needed of them...

***Acting: 5 Stars***

O just perfect actors! Especially the little girl (Eli), who was both sweet, but still quite freaky at times!

***Music: 4 Stars***

Excellent music, though I would have liked a catchy theme tune to hum on my way home...

***Emotions: 5 Stars***

Excellently emotional throughout, I was completely wrapped!

***Conclusion***

Well, in conclusion... It's basically perfect... need I say more?

Changeling (2008)
9/10
A beautifully created masterpiece!
16 December 2008
Well Clint Eastwood has certainly created a masterpiece this time.

I'll mention straightaway that it's not particularly my genre, being more of a Drama movie, so I'll be reviewing more indifferently here. Nevertheless, this movie turns out as a pure classic, to be remembered for years to come!

**Synopsis**

Inspired by actual events that occurred in 1920s-era Los Angeles, Clint Eastwood's "Changeling" tells the story of a woman driven to confront a corrupted LAPD after her abducted son is retrieved and she begins to suspect that the boy returned to her is not the same boy she gave birth to. The year was 1928, and the setting a working-class suburb of Los Angeles. As Christine (Angelina Jolie) said goodbye to her son, Walter, and departed for work, she never anticipated that this was the day her life would be forever changed.

Upon returning home, Christine was distressed to discover that Walter was nowhere to be found. Over the course of the following months, the desperate mother would launch a search that would ultimately prove fruitless. Yet just when it seemed that all hope was lost, a nine-year-old boy claiming to be Christine's son seemed to appear out of thin air. Overcome with emotions and uncertain how to face the authorities or the press, Christine invites the child to stay in her home despite knowing without a doubt that he is not her son. As much as Christine would like to accept the fact that her son has been returned to her, she cannot accept the injustice being pushed upon her and continues to challenge the Prohibition-era Los Angeles police force at every turn. As a result, Christine is slandered by the powers that be, and painted as an unfit mother. In this town, a woman who challenges the system is putting her life on the line, and as the situation grows desperate, the only person willing to aid her in her search is benevolent local activist Reverend Briegleb (John Malkovich).

Starring Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, and Gattlin Griffith. Directed by Clint Eastwood.

**Storyline: 4 Stars**

The story of the movie is both intense and gripping... the movie was 2.5 hours long, it never got tedious, in fact I didn't feel like it had taken more than about 2 hours... and, unlike The Dark Knight, this movie felt like it had a nice rounded ending... Quite satisfying through and through!

**Music: 5 Stars**

In my opinion, this music score is the only worthy contender with Danny Elfman's Hellboy 2 score for the upcoming Oscars. A wonderful score, not overly done, carrying the tone of the movie beautifully! Now that I look at it, I find that on the IMDb page that the music composer is actually Clint Eastwood himself... Never knew a director could make such great music!

**Acting: 3 Stars**

Angelina Jolie makes a wonderful performance in the leading role in this movie, and really connects with her character! The other members of the cast aren't excellent, but don't let the side down on no account...

**Conclusion**

I suppose you already know what I'm about to say... It's an excellent movie!

Watch it!

Igor (2008)
An interesting horror based animated movie
29 November 2008
Dreamworks' new animation is perhaps mainly for kids, but I'm sure it will also be enjoyable for accompanying parents.

Quite an experimental movie being an animation spoofing the horror genre.

Igor really wants to be an evil scientist, when he decides he wants to create an evil monster. What he creates may be quite a bit different than he had originally expected.

As a fan of the horror genre, I found it quite amusing being a spoof on Frankenstein. And I quite enjoyed it! I wouldn't recommend to everyone however, but if you happen you watch it, I'm sure you will enjoy it!

Graphics are good, and the movie is quite emotional at times. But don't forget that it's aimed at kids!

Easy Virtue (2008)
6/10
Easy Virtue is a delightful old British comedy based upon a play.
29 November 2008
The movie captures a real sensation of being back in England in the 1920s. It's a light comedy and easy to watch. Perfect Popcorn movie!

**STORYLINE: 2 Stars**

The movie's storyline is continuous and gets the job done, there shouldn't be problems on this point... The movie as a whole is quite easy to watch!

**MUSIC: 4 stars**

The music fits in wonderfully with the movie and certainly sets the tone throughout! wonderful work here!

**HUMOUR: 2 Stars**

The movie's quite funny, but nothing spectacular. It more quaint humour rather than outright hilarity.

**ACTING: 2 stars**

The acting in this movie was neither good nor bad, just got the job done.

**COLIN FIRTH: 3 Stars**

Colin Firth's work in this movie was quite good and many commendations to him in this role!

**BEN BARNES: 2 Stars**

Ben Barnes' role in this movie wasn't particularly special, though I blame this on the director rather than on Barnes himself. Though Ben Barnes fans will enjoy this movie as they will get to see a fair amount of their favourite actor.

**CONCLUSION**

I really enjoyed this movie, and I'm sure if you take this for what it is you will be able to enjoy it as much as I did.

Good viewing!

Great Action! Great movie!
29 November 2008
Ridley Scott's new movie is quite similar to Black Hawk Down and American Gangster.

**SYNOPSIS**

Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a covert CIA operative working in Jordan searching for terrorists who have been bombing civilian targets. Ferris uncovers information on the Islamist mastermind Al-Saleem (Alon Aboutboul). He devises a plan to infiltrate Al-Saleem's terrorist network with the help of his boss back in Langley, Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe). Ferris enlists the help of the Chief of Jordanian Intelligence, Hani Salaam (Mark Strong) on this operation, but he doesn't know how far he can trust him without putting his life in danger. The uneasy alliance leads to a cultural and moral clash between the men.

Poorly connected storyline...
24 November 2008
An exciting cop thriller... well I guess it would be if I could make sense of it, but the storyline is so badly conjoined that it makes it almost a pain to watch... though there were a couple things that I did like about this movie, it had a pretty nice cast, and the adrenaline was quite good at times.

Storyline: 1 Star

Far too disjointed to enjoy the movie.

Action: 2 Stars

The action pace was quite good in parts of this movie, and some of the sequences were quite well thought out. But the one problem with it was that there just wasn't enough of it.

Music: 2 Stars

The sound track was neither superb nor annoying, just got the job done.

Acting: 2 Stars

The movie boasts of a cast with a few big names on there, and should merit a watch from the various fans represented. Though I don't think the director gave enough room for the actors' talents to shine through.

Edward Norton: 2 Stars

Norton got the main role, though it would have be hoped that his performance would have been a bit better. But I guess cop thrillers don't tend to give too much room for acting talents.

Colin Farrell: 2 Stars

Like Norton, he wasn't quite able to shine through in this movie, though there was a little spark left there.

Jon Voight: 3 Stars

Voight seemed to make the best of a fairly basic role, and must be commended on his performance. But even though so much was promised, there were still limiting factors which in the hand of a good director could have created a wonderful character for Voight.

Conclusion

Pride and Glory held a lot of promise but with an awful storyline, it totally failed to deliver... I'm afraid this time I can't recommend this movie...

Del Toro is pure genius!
5 November 2008
I went to see Hellboy 2 last night, I left the cinema feeling as happy as anyone ever could be! I have been waiting all year for this film to come out, and it certainly didn't disappoint me! We start the story with all our favourite characters from the first film... and lot's of great new characters! If you like characters, you won't be disappointed by Hellboy 2.

The story takes-off with a beautiful narration by John Hurt which truly sets the tone for the whole film.

The films sets out with a great start! wonderful fights and beautiful choreography, which will bring a sense of excitement over you, then there will be a turning point, where Del Toro will play on all your senses at once... then the story really starts! Beautiful paintings of Love, Betrayal, and Hard Choices along with Sacrifice, as only Del Toro Knows how to do.

I can hardly do justice in reviewing this film, but I shall endeavour to bring parts out in future reviews.

Directed by Guillermo Del Toro. Starring Ron Perlman, John Hurt, Selma Blair, and Jeffrey Tambor.

There are some really funny bits, great expletives in Hellboy's own fashion, but yet we come to that great part where one has to make a choice between love or loyalty! Wonderful score by Danny Elfman, some really funny songs too! A worthy sequel to the first Hellboy! For those of you not at all interested in the first film: this one takes on a totally different look on Hellboy and can work as a stand-alone film... that means you don't have to have watched the fist film to love the second! Well that's enough for one review, but look out for more upcoming Hellboy reviews! Movie Rating: 10/10

Great movie, as good as the first and better than the second! A pure delight!
5 November 2008
I personally really liked this movie, and I think it's well worth the name that the first movie won! Innocence has been lost in this movie, Troy's and Gabriella's lives are much more complicated now, it really feels like they have grown up.

The director does a very good job of playing with the emotions, though I thought that the movie took a little while to properly start going.

Music-wise, I don't think it quite stood up to the first movie, a talented singing style has been substituted for a catchy tune, which I did enjoy, and perhaps helped in making the movie feel move complex. So I commend the director on what he did, but would have liked to have had Troy and Gabriella sing one final soft song mixed with a good singing talent! The movie has some wonderful choreography which is very pleasing to the eyes! All in all the movie is a very pleasant watch, and I'll recommend it to all my readers!

One of the greatest spoof movies of all time!
5 November 2008
With the launch of the DVD, I figured I ought to review this great spoof movie! I enjoyed this movie a lot more than the recent "Disaster Movie" and it's a sure recommend for anyone looking fora good laugh.

The movie is basically a spoof of the Superhero genre as a whole and in particular of Spiderman! extremely funny for a fan of superhero movies! I was laughing throughout the movie, even on my second viewing! And I rarely find silly jokes funny, but this movie is a pure gem! I guess I'm giving it a few too many good points, but my only basis of comparison is with Disaster Movie, which really does not kick up much of a fight.

In reality, I can't say much about the movie, but it will certainly attract those that are fans of the superhero genre and also people that are just generally out for a good laugh! So I'll certainly recommend this movie, but please don't expect anything too intellectual!

The Orphanage (2007)

The Greatest Horror of All Time!
5 November 2008
The Orphanage has recently come out on DVD in the UK and is currently available in the USA, so I once again want to draw my readers' attentions to this true masterpiece.

Rated by most reviews 5 stars ***** and by the rest 4 stars **** this film is the second Pan's Labyrinth (horror version) and should certainly not be missed! Like Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage is very pictorially thought provoking, and has certainly hit the mark again! Produced by Guillermo Del Toro and directed by JA Bayona. Starring Belen Rueda and Geraldine Chaplain.

Often rated as one of the most scary films ever, this is a great film for Horror fans, but at the same time it is really thought provoking! Watch it!

A True Original
5 November 2008
New to DVD! Ben Afleck's directorial debut is like no other film you will find, very original! A little girl is gone missing, our hero must search all of his untoward contacts in order to find her... when he does find the girl it is not in the way that he had expected...

This movie is relentless, it is a drama in the legend of "Good Will Hunting" yet this movie refuse to be a clone and will never resort to being a general "feel-good" movie! I basically just got this movie because it was exclusive to Blockbuster, and I'm not usually a fan of the Drama genre, as I tend to think of them as an excuse for poor plot line... But this movie is relentless, excellent original storyline! Crime, Guilt, Family, Love, all to be found in this movie, a wonderful mix of emotions! Starring Cassey Afleck, Michelle Monaghan, Meg Ryan, Ed Harris, and Morgan Freeman, A great cast, Ed Harris is particularly good in this movie! Movie Rating 9/10
