Bad Behaviour (2023)
Discombobulated, and then some
Maybe I'm just stupid but I didn't get it. Ok, so she (Jennifer Connelly) has a bad relationship with her daughter. Why not just attack that theme head on. Do we really need to see all those strange group therapy sessions with that disturbing leader, ...juxtaposed with the stunt daughter doing clumsy rolls. I couldn't wait for this to end. And a few times, I thought it would. But then comes the violence followed by the meeting with the daughter and the lawyer. What in the world does it add to the movie to bring in a romantic (and highly awkward) kiss with the lawyer. You would think that the director could fabricate some tension between mother and daughter but I felt none. Did I really give this a 2 instead of a 1?
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017)
Needed more consistency and more Mrs. Maisel
Season one was awesome. Lot's of Mrs. Maisel on stage or going on stage. Great story line with Lenny Bruce as well. By season 3 and 4 we see that the writers have run out of story lines. They have to have all sorts of side stories to fill the hour. And because on that we get way too much of Joel, his parents, and Midge's parents. Midge and Suzy are the stars and we were left with very awkward and made up stories dealing with her mother's match-making business which became cringe worthy. Joel's dating and club ownership also fell flat. Even the story line about Joel's parents moving in with the Maisels was bad. But along comes season 5 and Midge and Suzy return to the spot light! Some of the season 5 episodes are lacking but the good ones make up for it. Midge working on the writing staff should have been developed in earlier seasons because there's so much that can be done with that dynamic. Overall, a solid 7 but episodes can vary from 2 stars to 10.
Transatlantic (2023)
Bad acting, bad score, bad directing
I was very excited to begin watching this limited series because it seemed like a perfect historical fiction story that I knew very little about but it had all the right elements: WW ii and beautiful scenery in France for starters. The first thing that I felt was off was the music. It didn't fit the mood or acting. It's as if the score was written without ever having seen the show. It seemed like an attempt to bring some drama into this show. The reason I say it that way is because there is no drama here yet the music sounds like something out of a bad spy story. Then I started to question the acting. Cory Stoll plays a somewhat comical roll of a US diplomat in such a way as to lessen any possibility of drama. Did he just get bad instructions from the director? Gillian Jacobs acting is also off. There's a certain lightheartedness to her words that could easily have turned this into a comedy. Not all the acting is bad, just the main characters. They must have received the most directions which leads me to believe it's bad directing. This is definitely something to avoid, even the pretty scenery was not enough to hold my interest.
