Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
Epic fail
The original and this version have only 2 things in common: 1) the title, and 2) the fact that the characters in the movie needed glasses/goggles to see the ghosts.
Beyond that, this is a truly wretched remake.
The whole concept and nature of the original were lost entirely in this version, which relies entirely on disturbing imagery and deranged content.
It's truly a sad state of affairs for Hollywood. It seems they are only capable of turning books into movies or attempting to revive/redo originals, only to do a disservice to them and serve as an embarrassment.
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Similarity to original is only in the name
It's a shame this "remake" has the same name as the original.
I can only wonder how many people attempt to rent the original and mistakenly get this debacle and are disappointed beyond belief.
The magic and mystery that was the original are lost in this pathetic attempt at a remake.
This version is full of disturbing imagery that was never the intent of the original film, which relied on a clever plot and talented acting.
It seems Hollywood has nothing new to offer.
Either they are turning books into movies or remaking movies that needed no improvements, as is the case with this sad defamatory attempt at a remake.
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)
All beauty and no brains
The scenery of the film is breath-taking. The house is exquisite, and as always, del Toro does an immaculate job creating an ominous and foreboding mood. The scares in this movie are well thought out and are not the cheap thrills Hollywood has come to depend on, and the film did a good job building momentum.
However, that being said, the plot and its lack of logicality stop the film dead in its tracks. The stupidity of the film goes beyond the typical, "No, don't go in there!" that one typically expects in a horror film. The ridiculousness of the characters' actions makes this film frustrating and near impossible to appreciate.
I saw this film because I love "haunted house" films, I'm an old Katie Holmes fan from her Dawson's Creek Days, and I think Bailee Madison is adorable, and therefore, I'm awarding one point for each redeeming quality in the movie - 1) awesome scenery, 2) Katie Holmes, and 3) Bailee Madison.
House on Haunted Hill (1959)
First they'll come for me...
Oscar worthy movie, this is not, but if you are looking for a truly creepy movie, then this will suffice.
Vincent Price is exquisite and encompasses his character's personality with perfection.
There are some good scares in the movie as well, namely 2 that come to mind that caused me to jump out of my seat! The remake of this version is an abomination and is full of disturbing imagery that was never this film's intent.
The last line of the film sends chills down my spine, and of course, it would be uttered by none other than the voice himself...Vincent Price!
Tooth Fairy (2010)
Laugh-out loud funny!
When a friend first told me he had seen a preview for this movie, I initially rolled my eyes and accused him of either having made it up or having mistaken a "spoof" commercial as a real commercial! Once I did see the preview myself, I, like many of us, was extremely hesitant to see a movie in which "The Rock" dons a tutu, especially at $9.50 a ticket. Nonetheless, I was feeling "adventurous" and decided to see this movie recently ... and was greatly and pleasantly surprised! I laughed-out-loud on at least 10 different occasions. This movie is very funny and entertaining, and I am glad that I decided not to listen to many other reviewers' reviews, as I would have missed out on a very funny movie. The movie flowed well. Normally during movies, I check my watch to see when the darn thing is going to end and how much time is left, but I never checked my watch for this movie. It held my interest and made me laugh!
