All Is Lost (2013)
Technical Faults Spoiled an Implausible Story
No one this unprepared should ever be allowed the helm of a boat, any boat. We know he knows what a sea anchor is, but he failed to use it during the storm when it was really needed to keep him bow into the wind. I will leave it to others to list all the ways this guy lacked seamanship. After he tossed down the open bladed knife I had to just look away. A poor, implausible script sank this movie before it really got underway. It continued to be completely unbelievable right to the end where he came back to life fifty feet underwater and swam to the light at the surface. Redford went all in on this one, both literally and figuratively, and that does not happen often.
Battle Taxi (1955)
Wrong in every way
Everything about this movie is wrong.... or just plain bad.
From the writing, directing, choice of stock footage, etc.... the dialog stunk to high heaven. The editor of the stock footage even screwed that up by showing a few seconds of a jet about to start, then the blades revolving as a big radial on a B-29 started to turn followed immediately by the blast of a jet tailpipe as it begins to taxi..... I can't go on. This has to be at or very near the top of the list of really bad war movies of all time. Close ground support by jets instead of the prop jobs that actually did it held over from WWII. Huge formations of aircraft fly over constantly as though at a big air show, which is probably where most of the stock footage came from. Just awful.
Company of Heroes (2013)
Good acting for the most part but highly historically inaccurate.
I am a WWII buff and have been for most of my 69 years. This movie was a big disappointment, despite the talented actors doing a pretty good job with the story and script they were trashing history with. In this day and age where writers are too lazy to even research and write accurate stories of events, it is a shame. Especially since we have so many new research tools at our fingertips compared with the fifties and sixties when more accurate WWII flicks were in their heyday. Of course, the forties were loaded with propaganda because we were either in the war or recently finished with it and trying to counter red propaganda.
The Germans were never even close to setting off an atom bomb. Certainly the allies were worried about that possibility and the Germans certainly were trying at various times during the war to develop the thing, but they blew their chances when they imprisoned, shot, or exiled the majority of their scientific talent in not only Germany but conquered eastern block nations. They just basically shot themselves in the foot when they stopped the Jews from participating. The A bomb program was so unorganized, fragmented, and doomed from the start, (Imagine this. Goring was actually put in charge near the beginning) that it never had a prayer of beating the allies. The movie infers that we not only stopped them by rescuing the brains of their efforts, but that it made some kind of difference as to whether we could accomplish the bomb ourselves without him. Hogwash and a terribly irresponsible revision of history by the story tellers. Other reviewers have pointed out the absurdness of ending up with an American, a Russian, and a Brit working together. The British worked with us on the bomb in the US and the Russians had several successful spies working on the Manhattan project feeding them nearly everything anyway.
A high ranking German officer wearing a horrific brace that is meant to be menacing I suppose. How likely is it that he would have spikes protruding on the inside where they could catch on the inside of his other leg and eventually cripple him completely. What a comic book idea that one was. What are the odds of him being everywhere they went, even beating the train to Stuttgart ahead of them. Neat too that he happened to be at the Opera for the same performance our hero had to attend. They managed do this all this as a fighting group instead of a lone infiltrating spy which is the only way to pull that off. They even did it without speaking German, other that a few WWII movie cliché quotes.... That tank crushing that soldiers head and body made me choke on my popcorn though. I guess you can file that one under sensationalism.
The Newsroom (2012)
A Real Political Trojan Horse
I have always liked Jeff Daniel's acting and it is top notch here as usual, however, the script is over the top much of the time.
But more importantly, as good as all the acting is, and as seemingly concerned as the characters are portrayed to be by the scripts, this show is blatantly biased everywhere you turn. Here is an anchor who is portrayed to be right leaning when in reality he is very liberal as is nearly every other reporters personal views. It almost seems like a bunch of liberals held a meeting in Hollywood last year and hatched a plan to pretend to create a newsroom show while working hard to convince the viewing audience that they really were determined to be fair and unbiased in their reporting while actually attacking every single aspect of conservative viewpoints. Targets by this 'phoney news organization' include Big Business, Republican candidates, Arizona's attempt to stop illegal immigration, Oil companies, the sad news for them that so many conservatives were elected in the houses of congress, and more. They even promoted their views on illegal immigrants in their conversation and broadcast sympathetically while failing to mention any points from the other side like the fact that it is illegal, that they are jumping ahead of legal applicants who are waiting to immigrate to the US. They also conveniently ignore all the criminal stats related to illegals and fail to mention the federal government's failure to enforce our laws. They belittle opposing views in interviews while claiming to be fair. As usual, the Dimocrats on the left are counting on the uninformed public to view this and not realize the way they are being manipulated to form anti-conservative views. The real clincher is when they trot out Hanoi Jane as the big business owner who just wants ratings at all costs. Casting one of the biggest bleeding heart liberals in that spot is suppose to make us think producers are being as fair as possible...... I didn't like the promos I saw because of the apparent bias, but I sat and watched the first three episodes in full in the hopes I was wrong about this. The show does has moments that are really good. Too bad it is just another Hollywood trick by liberals to slam conservatives. Just another Dimocrat bag of dirty tricks as far as I am concerned.
That's My Boy (2012)
What a piece of crap.
What a piece of crap. What a poor excuse for a teen movie. The writers should be ashamed and hang their heads when they cash each and ever dollar they earn peddling such absolute garbage.
I realize each movie (generation) has to outdo or out-shock the last, but this is the bottom of the barrel, the end of the line, the worst of the worst, the cheapest of the cheap. Teen targeted movies have always tried to shock and amuse but this is utter trash which is just complete filth.
Do you get the idea I don't like it? Ask yourself what we are doing to our younger generations. God help us if this is the answer to how we want our children to learn to act. Good writers can make an entertaining, exciting movie without all the filthy, cheap, degrading language which contributes absolutely nothing but negativity to a once cultural medium.
