Road House (2024)
Decent watch until McGregor
I loved the OG Road House and was looking forward to this modern take on the classic. Jake mentioned how much he original meant to him and also worked with Patrick before, so hopes were medium. It was off to a decent start-nothing you'd take too seriously, just an easy watch. Sure, there were mildly laughable moments, but the music was good and acting decent.
Until Conor McGregor. Wow. His character and acting is just awful. It's like the writers quit and got replaced with someone else the second his character shows up. It's so cringe. The comical mannerisms mixed with the terrible stream of one-liners...oof. It hurt to watch.
House of Hammer (2022)
These negative reviews are terrifying for survivors
It's clear in the reviews we have a bunch of A) Armie fans who feel they have to personally defend him or B) men who fear they'll be one day accused of SA.
The amount of victim blaming against Armie's exes is so disappointing, and the people claiming they're lying are completely ignoring the testimonies of family members, friends, and former business partners of the Hammer family. All woven together, it's incredibly damning. Does that mean viewers should blindly believe everything here! No. But just because you strongly dislike the victims or have trust issues against women who dated a celeb does not negate the entire film. It was a very well done documentary.
Magnum P.I. (2018)
Easy watch, pays homage to OG MPI
I'm a diehard original Magnum PI fan and resisted this remake for six years. But someone had it on the other day and I decided to see what it was like. First, I was outraged (okay not really, but I did roll my eyes) that Higgy was turned into a female. And the first few episodes were definitely shaky. But I kept watching and I've come to love it. Reasonably so, people put the original on a high pedestal, but they also forget it was a light hearted, easy watch that was sometimes corny. This show is just a modern take on the same thing. The cast has great chemistry. It's obvious the main actor studied Selleck, but still ads his own twist to it. The actress who plays Higgy is wonderful! TC and Rick come into their own as well. The fan club needs to lighten up and stop gate keeping. It's a good show.
The Bear (2022)
Chaotic Masterpiece
I agree with the other comments that yes, it is frantic, chaotic, frustrating, and anxiety inducing. But it has so much depth and well-developed characters. It all weaves together to tell a beautiful story. Do I wish they cut down on the scenes where everyone is just yelling at each other? Yes, but I can still enjoy the show.
Season two was even better than season one as the characters calmed down, grew up, and found their feet.
The editing is fantastic and the cameo by Olivia Coleman was a breath of fresh air. Jamie Lee Curtis was brilliant, possibly her best acting yet, as I loathed her character.
Great show. Can't wait to see season 3.
Argylle (2024)
Fun, cheesy, but way too long
Went into the movie already fans of the entire cast, but knowing little about the movie. The general plot and few twists are good, but the film was at least 30-minutes too long. If you can go into it expecting something fun and cheesy (which apparently plenty in these reviews didn't), then you'll have a decent time.
Some scenes dragged far too long past the initial joke, like (no spoiler) the fog scene. It was funny at first, then five minutes later, you're still waiting for the next scenes.
So many of the scenes were so over the top that you're wondering if it's in the author's head, and when they weren't, you're left thinking it's a bit much. But I think that's what the movie is supposed to be.
Barbie (2023)
Fun flick!
It boggles the mind how anyone could be offended at a fun film like Barbie. Honestly, it says more about the offended than it. Does anything else.
Barbie was a fun, lighthearted, flick, with a great message, encouraging everyone to find themselves.
Barbieland starts a place where women hold the positions of power, any job they want, and their own success is independent of any man. For men upset by this, please take pause and try really hard to see that maybe this is how real life women have been feeling for hundreds of years.
Barbie does an excellent job to show the audience that everyone, men and women, need to learn who they are aside from their partners, their possessions, their job, and their social status.
The jokes at Mattel's expense were enjoyable, and very surprising that the company let those stay in.
I very much enjoyed seeing several stars from Sex Education in the film, and great to see them in these roles. Costume design was on point, and the site design was so cool to see.
Despite being upbeat and usually fast paced, the film ended on a much slower note, which was a little disappointing. Overall, it was a great viewing experience, and it's quite the laugh that anyone could be offended by it I would be like this.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Didn't Feel like GotG at all.
First off, I realize it's CGI, but the experiments on animals, their torture, and their imprisonment was just too much. Especially for a Marvel movie. It was a level of dark that didn't belong. That pretty much ruined the film for me, to be honest.
Second, this didn't really have the traditional Guardians look or feel to it at all. So many lines and scenes felt so out of character that I felt like I was watching a completely different universe. By about halfway though, I was more than ready for it to be over.
The dance scene at the end... what the actual. So uncomfortable.
Peter Quill continues to be one of the most annoying and whiney characters in the Marvel universe, but everyone else except Rocket was fighting hard for that title in this one.
Such a disappointment. This was less of a send off and more of just a movie for the sake of making a movie.
Lioness (2023)
Exciting Show, Great Writing
It's sad to see so many one-star reviews from military members and others who clearly can't stand having strong, female leads. This is a fictional show, people. It's made for entertainment. It's not going to get everything about the military exactly right, and it's clearly not pretending to. Do iyou think Yellowstone is an exact portrayal of ranch life? Definitely not. No need to be so easily offended about it. We don't see ranchers up in arms over the dramatization over their industry. For those offended by the language, violence, and nudity, have you ever seen Taylor Sheridan's shows? Lol
While I do find the writing around De Oliveria's character severely flawed, it's clearly done so they can speed through laying the groundwork for the show.
Saldana is a power lead, and I'm loving every minute of it. Her character's relationship with Annable is well written, and it's nice to see how two flawed people navigate a very completed relationship with demanding careers.
Overall, the characters are likable and well developed, though with some gaps from the writers. There's a great balance of dialog and action and some really great fight and chase scenes.
Is it 100% realistic? Of course not. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the show. It's great!
National Treasure: Edge of History (2022)
Ignore the Haters
There are too many people in these reviews hating on it because it's not the films from 20 years ago and because it's not realistic or historically accurate (spoiler: the films weren't either).
Sure, just like the films, you have to suspend your disbelief. There are definitely some eye-roll moments, but overall, it's a cute, lighthearted and exciting show, obviously made for young people or families.
There are a lot of men in the reviews upset over having a female lead or the beautiful diversity of the cast, but I found it to be great. The lead dives into her family history, exploring what America was like when the explorers upset the lives of the Natives. Each supporting character brings a unique element to the story (Oren was great!), creating a well-rounded group of people.
Casting-wise, Lisette Olivera is a delight, and I look forward to seeing her talent to continue to develop. Cipriano and Reed are also great supports, while Rodrigues and Walker are a little shaky, but that's more the poor writing for their characters. Breeda Wool tried WAY too hard (And her character's overall look was just bad) and though I love Zeta-Jones, she was NOT right for this role. Not to mention her wigs were awful.
If you're looking for a lighthearted mystery/adventure show geared towards a younger audience, or an easy watch, give it a shot!

Three or Four Episodes Drawn Out to Nine
Given this family's history and future, and the time it takes place in, this had the groundwork to be the best of the Yellowstone universe. The casting was excellent, the three storylines had powerful foundations, and the costumes and cinematography were incredible.
But the timing absolutely flopped here. Taylor Sheridan was clearly distracted with Yellowstone or another project when producing this one. The episodes are unbelievably drawn out to the point where an episode ends and you ask yourself, "Okay, what actually happened? Nothing." Spencer and Alex's storyline started as the most interesting, then became completely unrealistic. One thing after another just makes the viewer go "OH COME ON." The whole point of the season is to see what happens when the Duttons have to defend against Dalton's character and yet it never happens, and Spencer is still on the other side of the ocean, basically where he started, and the Duttons have chose to do nothing but sit and wait for him to arrive. We're basically watching paint dry at the Ranch.
Teonna's storyline is heartbreaking and gripping, and Aminah's acting is incredible. But her storyline also could have been told so much more powerfully in half the time.
It seems to me that Sheridan is purposely drawing out a one-season story into two seasons just for the sake of making an extra buck. We'll watch because we're invested in the family, but nothing about this season has been satisfying from an entertainment perspective.
