Gatlopp (2022)
Witty Fast-paced Movie!
Add me to the list of fans of this cute Indie movie with very likable character, and actors. I don't recall seeing any of the 3 male leads in other roles, but thought each was very good in their roles in" Gatlopp". The female lead is amazing, (and I know her name, but can't access at the mo.) and the 2nd woman lead was great in her part.
I found the script tight & snappy, And! I actually had tears in my eyes at one dramatic peak, even while realizing what a universal touch point it was, and how manipulative the script is being, while also getting some short, but genuine feels.
I laughed, I cried! All in all, I enjoyed this really sweet-natured fun movie.
The Queen of Spades (1949)
A True Gem of Movie History
Seeing the story synopsis before viewing, I was not greatly enthused about seeing this movie, expecting perhaps the over-passionate and florid scripting & acting commonly seen in many "historical" movies. I was entranced by the whole package of this movie. I reveled in the details of costuming & sets, and the lovely black & white camera & lighting, the restrained yet high-level acting & dialogue. The atmosphere was believably Russian, amazing that it was all shot on a soundstage. Other reviewers have talked about the plot, direction, camera-work & acting. The main thing I wanted to mention is the extremely important contributions of Oliver Messel, legendary set & costume designer. His work gave the actors the solid base of knowing that the sets & costumes were top notch & "right" to support their skill.
Nocturna (1979)
I Thought I Was Hallucinating This Movie!
Then I found it again on Fawesome channel on Roku. As others have summed it up - Ms. Bonet, the star & I guess producer, is horrendous in the lead. I had pegged her as a stripper/dancer/porn actress without even knowing her background. The main comment I want to make is about Antony Hamilton, the love interest of Ms. Bonet. He was undeniably handsome but seems so gay he was totally unbelievable as a hetero love interest. Also, he is the stiffest, least adept "dancer" I have ever seen on film. I laughed out loud at his dancefloor moves, repetitive & unchoreographed evidently. At least in this movie he dances like the nerdiest white guy on the floor.
The movie is undeniably camp, and you will probably get some laughs put of it, but as other reviewers said, the script & acting is lamentable. There are some beautiful bodies on display, but for me they had all the appeal of a cheap soft-core movie w similar production values. Not much.
Sleepwalkers (1992)
Quirky, Confusing but Memorable
Having seen several very low ratings in the reviews, I have to stick up for this unique movie. I don't contest the flaws it has, which are listed in the negative reviews, but I also don't contest the opinions that point out the excellent casting. Like many other fans, I think Alice Krige can be relied on to give a riveting performance even in a flawed production. Very similar to her seductive, layered role in one of my fave scary movies, "Ghost Story", she is the ice cold heart of Sleepwalkers. Brian Krause has been a long-time hearthrob for me, with his blonde, milk-fed smoothness, and when he has a role that fits, as in this movie, he is quite good at suggesting the ugliness of character possible behind the beautiful-boy facade. I remember having a real girl-crush on Madchen Amick after seeing this movie years ago. I totally disagree with the reviewer who claimed she was an example of looks substituting for talent. I've seen her in other roles & have always been impressed with her charisma and uniqueness as an actor, in addition to being a beautiful young woman in a natural way, not an enlarged-fake-boobs-&-trout-pout-way. In this movie, she is appealing & believable as a small town teen curious and conflicted about her sexual desires and resentful of the caring but controlling expectations of her parents (and society). The entire cast is good. I'm not a fan of King as an actor, but as others have said, the cameos are part of the quirky charm of the movie. I guess I like this movie so much because I'm quirky and prefer an almost cartoonish approach to movie violence in a horror movie rather than the extreme, realistic blood and gore so expected in modern horror movies. I find Sleepwalkers' special effects and makeup certainly adequate and professional, in my admittedly amateur opinion. I really dont care for excessive CG. I feel It takes the place of character development many times. As others have said, this movie succeeds on many levels despite some flaws.
Witchcraft (1964)
B & W British Horror Gem
Just wanted to add my praise for this relatively unknown movie. It is showing on Tubi channel on my Roku tv currently (2/20). I'm a long-time fan of creepy, suspenseful but not gory movies and love b & w films, too. Surprised that I'd never seen this one before coming across it on Tubi. Other reviewers have already summarized its charms. I guess I would call the genre it belongs to "cozy horror" - taking off on the well-known "cozy mystery" books of such as Agatha Christie. It does have its moments of suspense and thrills, and personally - although the Witch did a fine job acting menacing without hamminess - I would have liked to see her be a little more gruesome-looking. After all, she'd been buried for 300 years! And as others mentioned, Lon Chaney seemed a bit out of place, but you have to give the guy props - he is an icon and gets away with some overacting.
Overall, highly recommend this well-paced, well-acted classic thriller. It's not one where you wait and wait for anything to happen - the thrills start right off and continue throughout. It deserves to be better known.
