Girls' Night Out (2023)
And So It Goes
Yawn. Yet again I sit through a dreadful mind-numbingly dull disappointing Aussie film asking myself why we are so bad at making movies in this country?
Is there anyone out there with any talent at all? Any innovative clever scripts?
How these films get made is one of life's mysteries. Who puts up the money? How were they convinced this was in any way a decent script/idea?
Nothing happens! Nothing of relevance anyway. How is this remotely interesting or engaging to the audience??
Was this made by a bunch of film students?
So a few girls go out to a club....and????
What was the point? Where is the story? Where is the insight? It is just such a meaningless boring nothing film.
Most will say "why don't you just turn it off?"
Fair point and maybe I am a sucker for punishment but I just sat there with my mouth open amazed at how bad a movie can be and again wondering why we keep making films this poor.
The Royal Hotel (2023)
Yawnfest
Here we go again. Yet another bland Aussie movie. Why oh why do we think the international audience can only identify anything Australian with the outback? With drinking. With dumb moronic drunk men. God it's boring.
This is just a nothing film. I am puzzled as to how or why it was green lit. It's not original. It's not well written. It is just full of dull cliché dialogue and characters.
It goes nowhere, proves nothing and then ends.
I am so embarrassed to be Australian when I watch this crap. How about making an Australian film that isn't set in the outback, that doesn't show Kangaroos or snakes or drunks.
It isn't even scary. Is it meant to be? Is it meant t be a horror film? A thriller? A drama? What the hell is it?

Why Do We Suck at Film Making???
Being an Aussie I will watch any movie made here even though 99% of the time I shake my head at just how bad we are at making good films.
Most of them for some reason have to show the outback or the coastline. What, do they think Americans will eat it up just for that reason? A lot has changed since Crocodile Dundee you know!
In recent times there seems to also be this trend of making films based on a character struggling with their bland troubled life as he or she tries to raise a child and find work etc..
If we write a murder mystery again it has to be set in a rural town.
The stories are just so bland and I am not invested in the characters so I turn the film off after 15mins because I just don't care what happens to anyone and I am not going to waste my time finding out.
Our so called comedies are not funny, our action flicks have little action and will be based on something stupid like a giant squid or shark or crocodile.
We just don't have the ability to come up with any original unique interesting stories!
I watched Emily The Criminal last week and whilst it isn't going to win any oscars it was a great little story, one that could have been set here or any city in the world.
I cannot even name 5 good quality Aussie movies since 2000. It is embarrassing.
