Candombe (2001)
Candombe ¨ freedom drums¨
I really like this documentary, because it portraits the way of life of this Afro-Uruguayan culture, very similar to Bin Benders ¨Buena Vista Social Club¨ done with the Cuban music. In "Candombe" we can see all the people that create this culture in Montevideo like Juan Angel Silva, Lagrima Rios, Martha Gularte, that are not longer with us in this world, this is why the Rolling Stone magazine said that " Candombe is a unique documentary" and I agree.
SINOPSIS "Candombe" reflex the lifestyle of the afro-Uruguayan culture present in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. This culture comes from African slaves that were brought to the coast of Rio de la Plata; which now a days live in a very particular environment of music and dance all along the year. Their music is based on drum beat and their dances are represented by a serious of typical characters (" La mama vieja" "El escobero" and "El gramillero") the film gets deep into the world of this people and their most important and distinguish figures. This journey is as told by the poet and painter Carlos Paez Vilaro, very well known artist for his beautiful poetry and paintings. A must see film.
