Killing Eve (2018–2022)
1/10
It's long due to kill Eve and set us free!
17 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
For me this is one of the worse shows on Netflix or else. If there were a lower rating than one star, I'd have given it.

My basis for this opinion is founded on the following: There's no real story - I don't know who are the opposing organizations and what are they trying to accomplish. If the assassin is so skillful, why isn't Eve already dead in the first episode? What's the point of hopping all over Europe (and the world) when Eve is not on the run? What's the point in the story of flashing the names of European capitals (except Bulgaria, which the typical watcher of this refuse has no idea of the name of a single Bulgarian city, I presume). Why does Sandra Oh has to shake her hair loose in every episode? Where in the world does a married couple such as Eve and her husband have the kind of relationship portrayed in this series? There's more to say about how bad this series is, but I think I said enough.

Too much...
31 January 2024
A marginally interesting story mired in excesses. There is too much unneeded graphic violence, and too much smoking - almost no scene without smoking. I get it, those people in those days did smoke, but it is not essential to the plot to have it in almost all scenes - it was so excessive that I no longer was able to ignore it. A comment on this page gave much credit to the star's, Sofia Vergara, effort to gain the appearance of the real Griselda. It did not succeed - the real Griselda was plain ugly, while Ms. Vergara is very attractive. There was no resemblance at all. Overall, this is a mediocre crime drama to pass a few hours of a slow evening.

Will not be remembered or missed
25 August 2023
It started out as a slow burn 'based on actual events' kind of story, but, disappointingly it became no-burn series that dragged on with nothing interesting being added to the story line. At the end, the greatest disappointment came when the story ended with no clear conclusion. It was as if an additional season was needed to bring on a proper ending. Better yet, as an earlier reviewer suggested, telling the story as movie instead of a series could have kept the pace up a bit more dynamically. Still, it was perhaps educational to watch the pace of life in Norwegian society, assuming the depiction was realistic. The acting was not remarkable, but also not off putting - just did the job. Overall, it was a take-it-or-leave-it kind of series being more of a leave-it and less of a take-it.

Really bad
11 August 2023
Although the subject matter is interesting and important, the choice of dramatic format is entirely wrong. The subject matter is not complex and it was covered from all angles in the news media, but the choice of dramatization of the subject is entirely over the top both in terms of story-telling being in good taste. It is not a documentary, and that is made clear at the opening of each episode, it is not a comedy but the use of tasteless 'funny' depiction of real characters is not funny but feels like fingernails on the chalkboard. The snippets of footage depicting human organs removed during surgery were entirely unneeded to make a point of any kind but these scenes did make me look away from the screen. I'm not certain what was it that the creators of this series tried to convey, but was not informative enough, it was not clever, it was not funny and most of all it was not entertaining. Perhaps it was just a quick way to make a buck. Still, if you are movie lover, watch the first episode and decide for yourself. If you get turned off by the first episode there's nothing to follow that will change that impression.

Nothing there
17 June 2023
This film has very little going for it. It is made for those who like to watch endless scenes of fighting whereby deadly blows are exchanged for long takes but the hero's hair do remains perfect. Firearms of all sorts are used excessively but the hero never gets put down. Still, one would hope for some story line to justify all that violent action but at the end I had no real idea what was all the action about. Furthermore, I do get it that exaggeration is expected in this genre, but how on earth can they have such firefight in Vienna for so long and the police only sends in 2-3 cars that get destroyed and no reinforcement ever shows up. To sum it up, this movie has no real story and no credibility even for a graphic novel based storyline. It is just nonstop fighting for the sake of fighting.

Nice, with a few reservations
20 February 2023
I find the recurring issue of women practicing law at that era tiresome; the subject does have it's place but it is repeated every episode ad nauseum. I got it. Enough. Can we move past it?

The costume design is very impressive, but I can't stop wondering how can Lidia afford it while unable to pay her rent? I know that some plot elements are better ignored as they are not essential to telling the story, but being noticed means that they do detract some.

And finally, although titled as a law story, the action is more a detective story with hardly any courtroom scenes.

Over all, it seems as if a full-length movie would've been a better format than a series?

Really bad!
4 August 2022
This series is a survival in the wild story interlaced with flashbacks. The flashbacks are too frequent and have no real bearing on the survival part. Essentially, this train wreck can't decide which story it wants to tell, the survival story or the earlier life of the main character. The result is a failure to maintain interest in either. I turned it off after a few episodes being completely bored and annoyed.

I want my money back!
24 July 2022
One of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. The plot is chaotic, the action scenes are over the top, exaggerated and cartoonish not in a good way. The location hopping is pointless and makes no sense. In short, just a huge mess of a plot and a total waste of time.

Disappointing
23 February 2022
Frequent and excessive use of tense music, abrupt movements and overly tense facial expressions all meant to create an air of tension when in fact none exists. The plot is reminiscent of several films of the genre but the execution is lacking; it's not a complex story and without any new convincing approach that could have elevated it above the well beaten path, it did not even succeed in telling the story in a simple way. Conclusion: Not a good movie.

Over the top
19 February 2022
In short, bad acting by most (except the lead), too long, many unrealistic characters. All this adds up to a bad movie (series). The dialog is lacking, and several episodes just drag it out without a real contribution to the story. Sadly, an interesting true story was made into a not-so-good movie.

Weak story line
28 January 2022
The premise is made clear but just so, and it is just a repeat of an overused spy movie formula. The actions jumps confusingly with great disconnects from scene to scene. I am by no means an expert in espionage, yet I still find many episodes illogical and counter to common sense. The ending is left open but does not serve a dramatic means, rather it's just another indication of a poorly written script. Using non-Hebrew speaking cast who seem to understand the language but nevertheless reply in English. Is a cheap trick that best avoided.

Overall it's a poorly written and executed film with nothing new to offer for the genre.

Hated it!
14 August 2021
I found the format of presenting the complete movie as a series of computer screen interactions among the characters as highly unsatisfying. Perhaps to some this may seem cool and a new approach to film making, but to me it was entirely ineffective, boring and annoying. We have too much screen action in our daily lives on smartphones, tablets and computers. We don't need more of it in lieu of a 'normal' movie. I'd even hasitate to call it a movie.

Unimaginably bad!!!
24 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
One of the worst movies I ever warched. The story line makes no sense. Suspensful background music plays continuesly for no reason - very annoying. The family lives as hunters/trappers in the woods but has no idea how to respond when called for during demanding circumstances. I should've shut it off after the 1st 20 minutes but foolishly kept on watching while hoping for improvement. It never came. If you consider watching this movie, reconsider, and run. If there was a way to rate it with less than one star, I would've.

The voice of Clooney with a beard like Dave Letterman's
25 December 2020
From my title you may guess that mine is more a commentary rather than a review. In my opinion, this movie is just plain bad. The sci-fi and Nordic scenes are visual gems. But the story is missing. A good movie doesn't require an elaborate story but a way of telling it in a way that keeps the viewer interested and entertained. This movie has a very simple plot, but nothing is done to make it interesting. The dialog is sparse, the pauses are much too long to be effective drama. Most of the time, the character's expressions are gloomy, which, I'm assuming is meant to be a dramatic tool. But to what end? Just in case you skipped over to the end, allow me to repeat: This is not a good movie.

Nothing new or fresh
19 September 2020
Sci-fi it is not. The reasons for this comment are too many to list, but here are a few: Sometimes there's weightlessness on board and sometimes not (probably based on production budget). Every crew member has a problem, which would never be the case in a real mission that carefully screens the crew before a 3 year space trip). Other than the set designs, the viewer would know that the act is taking place on a space ship on a long voyage from earth. It has all the formulaic elements of a rehashed soap opera: The whiney teenager, the lesbian, the full-spectrum racial makeup of the crew, marital problems, teenager high school drama, etc. Or, in a short summation: A confused pile of dreck.

Pure dreck!
8 September 2020
A compilation of every Hollywood cliche thrown together unskillfully to end up with 'comedy' that's not funny one bit and a story that is not there nor did I care to have it. Even Jon Lovitz, whom I liked way back on SNL is doing nothing more than recycling his old shtick. A shame.

Like fingernails on the chalkboard...
18 June 2020
The Lovebirds is labeled as a comedy/mystery, but the comedy is not there and the mystery is so scarce that it's almost not there. Aside from the overuse of cliches of conversations between lovers that we've seen many times before the 'funny' parts are not just not funny but I literally couldn't wait for the scenes to end - it was just hard for me to watch. Hard to believe someone was willing to fund such a loser production unless it provided a tax break or a shady financial activity. I've watched nearly 5000 movies in my life but I can't think of many as bad as this one.

Disappointing
24 January 2018
I'm surprised by the high scores given this movie by most IMDb folks. I'm not sure now if I saw the same movie as the one they commented on. I found the run time of 2:20 hours much too long. The plot included several side track sub-stories that were unneeded and most of all I was put off by a major flaw in the plot which I will not detail (to avoid spoiling it to those who still plan to watch it). Overall, the low rating given by Rotten Tomatoes was justified. Gerard Butler is not a great actor but a good one in action films. This one was a waste of his talents.

An unimpressive rehash of the original - Spoiler Alert!!!
24 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Here are the key reasons for which I did not like this film:

1. A ship on such mission would never go off plan to explore a mysterious signal from an unknown planet. 2. Once they decided to go and explore, the captain would never leave the mother ship – the command is his most important responsibly. 3. The second in command would always be as qualified as the captain and not an indecisive wimp. 4. Landing on an unknown planet, they would never go without wearing full protective bio suits, including gloves and helmets. 5. On the ground they'd never hike 5 miles in rough terrain to an unknown destination. 6. Smoking cigarettes and cigars and flicking the butt still burning on an unknown planet – only in a bad movie aimed at the heavy smoker Asian market. 7. When they got to the settlement, a hooded 'man' comes out and says 'Follow me' and they do without even asking him who he was. 8. The next scenario is very common these day in all action movies: The brutal fist fight that goes on forever when in real life a couple of times of being thrown against the wall would be enough to knock someone out for days. But in the movies they go on and on then walk away. In this one it was towards the end when the two cyborgs were going at each other. 9. And last, which really should've been first: A total lack of originality – it was almost a complete replica of the original. Receive a mysterious signal. Land on an unknown planet. Unknowingly get infected by the monster. Have the monster emerge from the host's chest and quickly reach adulthood and terrorize the ship until they manage to jettison it into space. The added piece here was that the evil cyborg took control and planted a couple of monster embryos in the incubator, and thereby opening the door to the next sequel.

I only saw the first two, and the a great part of the charm of the original was the looks of the ship. It was a mining ship returning to earth after a mining mission. Both the looks of the ship's interior and the scruffy crew was very similar to a seagoing cargo ship of our time. It was very much without all the glitz of sci-fi of today with plenty of CG and flashing light and 'futuristic' decor.

My buddy with whom I watched this movie who worked all his life in the defense industry mostly on military rockets and satellites leaned over and whispered to me 'they violated every NASA protocol concerning contact with the unknowns of extra-terrestrial environments'. The example he brought up as being a lot more accurate scientifically was "The Martian". I agreed.

Luc Besson where art thou?
29 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Luc Besson's writing of thrillers and action flicks used to be interesting enough to watch. No longer so. At least not this one. There are so many instances where the story is wrong. For example:

The car chase scenes are tiring and take place without a plot that makes them needed.

People act on information that we, the viewers, are aware of but the character that does so.

Someone with a near-fatal bullet wound is able to don a scuba outfit and swim a long distance the very next day.

Seems like Luc Besson is now writing script for viewers who don't care about a good story as long as there are fast cars, sexy women, fist fights and screeching tires. I guess the money is still good and that must be all that matters to him.

Can't be worse!
27 June 2006
The use of the term 'comedy' with relation to this documentary is an insult to the art of comedy, and worse yet is the pain that is inflicted on the viewers of this production. Almost nothing was funny.

This documentary followed a small group of stand-up 'comics' on the road as they travel from town to town to perform in small clubs.

It's interesting to note that their conversations and behavior off-stage and on-stage are indistinguishable, but sadly, equally unfunny.

It's possible to understand the self delusions of grandeur which the featured 'comedians' possess, but it's harder to grasp the sounds of laughter heard from their audiences. Perhas these are the same audiences for whom the lame sitcoms on TV are intended.

This was possibly the worst film I've ever watched in my 50+ years of movie viewing.

Contrived!
11 June 2006
The plot is contrived, completely unrealistic, yet without any discernible symbolism which may redeem, or justify such story telling. If some hidden allegory was the writer's intent it certainly escaped me in total.

The story takes place on the first day on the job for Gregg, a young office worker. Right from the start it presents situations that I have never witnessed in my 30+ years of work in an office environment. How does he walk directly to his cubicle in the new place without having been shown to it by anyone in the office is just the first of many events that are left without an explanation, but is typical of the general unsatisfying flavor of the plot.

It is as if the plot was assembled on the go and it encountered many twists and blind alleys from which it could not recover and so it just moved on with no closure.

Ultimately, it ends (alas, not soon enough) enigmatically in another contrived plot twist still without providing a clue to the meaning of the earlier hour-and-a-half of nonsense.

A complete waste of time.

The Ring (2002)
Interesting but weak.
11 March 2003
The premise is very interesting, and the plot starts out very strong, but after the first third the momentum is gone; the plot becomes too scattered, and it presents too many open-ended situations while the balance between the real and the supernatural is lost. At the end I was left unfulfilled, as the ending provided neither an explanation nor did it drift effectively into the imaginary realm to alleviate the need for an explanation.
