Get Carter (2000)
the suits maketh the man
21 February 2002
I think Stallone had more make-up on in this film, then the entire cast of "Moulin Rouge"....and what's with the goatee? was it real? in fact, was Stallone himself real in this film, or was it a hologram. Yeah, well i was asking myself the same questions throughout this film. I still have this strange attraction to Stallone's recent output...am i a victim of guilty pleasures? The original get carter is one of my absolute favourites, it had a raw central intensity to it. but this tepid, uninspired remake is akin to what "the assassin" is to the far superior original, "nikita". There are so many things i couldnt figure out, if Carter was so detached from his brother, why did he bother to avenge his death so badly? why not pay the guy some mind while he's alive. Rachel leigh cook, was awesome in this film, she is the bomb, probably her best performance, although i think in a few scenes she was sickering at Stallone's wardrobe (another major debit). Mickey Rourke was totally believable in this role, i especially loved the scene where he's explaining how dope the internet is to Stallone and how he is "swimming in the pond with the big fish" or some baloney. I nearly died laughing. The director's commentary is horrendously bad on the DVD, as Stephen Kay barely talks, (maybe a good thing), i think he should go back to delivering pizza. Lets hope this movie wont be made into a franchise (a la "Death Wish"), with Stallone avenging the deaths of anyone he remotely knew. At least this was better than "Driven". YO ADRIAN!

Spy Game (2001)
slick thriller as only mr.scott can do
20 February 2002
i saw this film about 3 weeks ago, and i was pleasantly surprised. it bared a number of similarities to Scott's previous film "enemy of the state", especially in the speed-frame camera work and editing. the middle section of the film became a bit muddled with all the intrigue, but i thought pitt and especially redford were commanding throughout. the guy i went to see this with, went to see "behind enemy lines" the next day and said that it kicked ass over this film, but i just disagreed and cut a fart on him.

i fell asleep with a burger in my mouth
20 February 2002
another annoying local product, where "hip" pretentious dialogue, and wanna-be wacky characters are supposed to make a coherent film. supposedly, the book has some sort of "cult" status, but i dont read which is probably why i've never heard of it.

well, at least noah taylor was less annoying here than he was in "tomb raider", the british girl was so dang irritating, and sophie lee over-acted madly. i did however like the fat dude with dreadlocks and the cockney landlord who threatened noah taylor.

this film just came across as another series of character viginettes, none of which were convincing or humourous. by the way, out of all the australian bands that could of been played over the opening credits....why spiderbait???????

2/10 (the 2 is for the close-up of the bucket bong)

Commando (1985)
a near-perfect comedy
20 February 2002
arnold must really miss these halycon days, where the bad scripts and one-liners flowed like wine, and the cheap sets fell apart like balsa wood. this film...sheesh...they just don't make them like this anymore. who could ever forget bill duke's oscar-worthy performance, and vernon wells' cecil b. de-mille award-worthy over-performance. i'm so in awe of this film that i cant even talk about it.

the world needs more dan hedaya.

The Bank (2001)
engrossing, intelligent aussie flick
18 February 2002
i'd been wanting to see this for a long time, ever since i heard wenham was going to be a chief protagonist (one of my favourite actors). his performance in "the boys" is still up in my top 10.

well, "the bank" was everything i expected and more. all the cast gave top-notch performances, and the believability of the subject remained pretty intact the whole way i thought. anthony lapaglia was great (as usual), although i would of preferred it if he played an australian. i just thought it would of added a bit more intensity. the guy who played wayne davis was also good, especially in the stand-off scene.

after being disappointed with a lot of recent australian films ("risk", "mullet"), this was a refreshing delight. i highly reccommend the dvd as well, as robert connolly's commentary is excellent and one of the best i've heard. i look forward to seeing with what he comes up with next

The Claim (2000)
long and not too exciting, but has its merits
18 February 2002
having only seen "welcome to sarajevo", and "i want you", i'm not too familiar with winterbottom's work, but this film was interesting due to the cast and subject matter. any film with sarah polley *swoon* and peter mullan, gets my attention straight away. wes bentley and his beard gave convincing performances as well. the film i thought just tended to drag a bit, and the dialogue didnt seem to have much flow. but the cinematography and sarah polley close-ups made up for that perfectly.

Zoolander (2001)
a model for others NOT to follow
18 February 2002
i got a free copy of this ben stiller vanity-fest last week, and i'm sorry to stay i could only sit through the first half hour. i usually don't mind mr.stiller, but he seemed to be trying too hard to emulate jim carrey and to a lesser extent, mike myers. the jokes just fell flat and the sight of jon voight as zoolander sr. gave me a genuine fright. what were you thinking jon? and what the hell was bowie doing in this movie? this movie was as flat as billy zane's scalp

Eye See You (2002)
stop! or my career will continue
18 February 2002
thank heavens for free tickets.

then again, my lesser instincts would of made me pay to see this film. for some reason, i was really looking to seeing it, since it was made almost 3 years ago, and has one of the most idiotic titles in history (for some reason its called "d-tox" here in australia, not "eye see you") well, stallone plays stallone pretty much, except he gets to exorcise his demons a lot more here (he looks even more depressed than he did in "assassins"). maybe because all his mates are getting drilled in the cornea, but oh well. tom berenger has less to do here than in "training day", playing forrest gump's even slower janitor brother. it was just a total incoherent mess. better luck next time, sly. i give you two "yo, adrienne's" for this one, only because this was better than driven (but worse than FORget carter) any one notice how sly's pose on the poster, is a dead ringer for george lazenby on "on her majesty's secret service"?

Training Day (2001)
denzel should get the oscar
18 February 2002
"Training Day" is flat out one of the best films i saw last year. the intensity and edginess of the script and delivery just bowled me over. the first time i saw it, denzel's amazing performance was what startled me, but the second time i saw it, i saw how good ethan hawke was too. it's hard to believe that dominique fuqua also made the average "Replacement Killers" and the execrable "Bait", but here, all is forgiven. the entire cast is excellent (has berenger had a face lift?), and the intensity just never lets up. the highpoint was denzel's screaming outburst on the street towards the end. i recite that to myself every day before work. denzel deserves the oscar for his performance here. full stop.
