Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time (2021)
A Life's Work: this finished documentary being the gold at the end of the Rainbow.
This documentary is clearly made with love and great skill. When these two factors hit off, as in this case, the story and experiences are revealed with upmost respect for what it all represents; from the whole to it's parts and from the viewer and what is infront of the camera.
I personally rate this as the highest level of documentary film-making I've seen in many years. You realise how Kurt Vonnegut and Robert Weide dedicated themselves to this, as did many other friends and family members. It is subtle and beautifully woven from each thread to the mext from a mindblowing library of footage. It made a very strong impression on me and I will cherish this experience. Here be gold!
The Last Norwegian Cowboy (2021)
A masterpiece
Sometimes...place, time and story just click together to represent something that is hard to define in words, better left to quiet reflection.
This is one of those films you might stumble across without being prepared for the raw beauty of what is being revealed, in the beautiful setting of rural Montana landscape. The filmmakers deserve special credit for capturing John Hoiland's stoic and humble life, working a small ranch, that is one of the last few surviving in the area. It highlights various themes in quiet beauty, such as friendship, honest hard work, the passing of time. A very well made piece of documentary and a credit to all involved.
Energy: A Documentary About Damo Suzuki (2022)
ENERGY - Damo Suzuki
I liked this humble and honest piece of documentary, that tells a very humanist story with warmth and compassion. Much more than a standard music documentary film, it shares gems of reflection and determination in conversation with Damo Suzuki.
It's true to portrait documentary style and many elements of Damo's life-philosophy make a strong impression.
It combines some concert clips, animation and atmospheric sound design that subtly compliment the flow, without detracting from the story. All i all, an intimate, uplifting and inspirational experience, with the final footage from the book release making a nice ending. A life-force in itself, with a suitable title; Energy.
