Ten Gentlemen from West Point (1942)
Not the first year of West Point as noted above
The above comments should be corrected
The setting of the story is 1808-1811 - several years after the Academy at West point was established in 1802. The story is erroneously perceived to be about the beginning of West Point, but it is concerned with a period when the Congress was considering closing the already existing Academy. There was a move (in the film) by Henry Clay in Congress and fostered by people like Maureen O'Hara's character to keep the school going. Another character alludes to the idea that the school was able to only graduate 1 officer the year before and that the past graduates were not all that could be expected. Worth watching. It is a shame that it was filmed on Hollywood's Western ranch sets rather than the beautiful setting on the Hudson. I guess it would have been too expensive and they would have to shoot around the more modern buildings. A historic fort like Ticonderoga would have been a good setting.
Still Breathing (1997)
Deep meaning flowing through it - Excellently cast
If you are not a sensitive guy - don't bother. Otherwise, this film is a treat. You must see the film in its entirety or you will not get it. Super casting job - I do not know of any others who could have handled the parts so well. A true look beyond the superficial plastic sides of characters we usually see. A truly pleasing experience to watch. Brendan Frasier and Joanna Going have much more going for them then the typical fluff of Hollywood types and this movie displays their depth well. Celeste Holm is enchanting and the supporting cast add much color and flavor.
Newsies (1992)
One of the best "feel good" movies. Catchy music, fun!!!
The directors have taken 200 teenaged boys with awkward voices, clothing and physiques and made them sing and dance with the Broadway best.
Fantasized on a real story and a bit farfetched, but this is pure entertainment. Great for all ages. One to watch with the kids.
This is an 8+ movie
Hook (1991)
It ain't GWTW, but it sure is a fun movie
Siskel and Ebert may not have loved it, but this is one of the most fun movies of all time. Nobody could have played Peter Pan like Robin Williams. Throw in Spielberg and Dustin Hoffman as a fiendish "Hook" and you have a real winner. Casting is genius, acting tops and the story is as "feel good", warm, clever and amusing as it gets. Have the kids with you as well as the grandparents. Watch it when you need to get out of the "dumps".
Silverado (1985)
12 or more big name actors/stars in this one
Good clean Western escapist fun movie. Should be a classic. At least 12 big name stars, lots of character actors and fine director should have made this movie a bigger hit. It is a "10" in my book. Sit down and watch it on a rainy Saturday afternoon and you won't be disappointed.
Why wasn't it a bigger hit? Maybe too many stars who had to give up screen time to each other, maybe the old fashioned Western theme and plot, maybe a studio that missed the boat on promoting it too weakly. Whatever, it is thoroughly watchable and timeless
